Nicole Kidman Rents Out New York City Apartment

The Real Deal broke the news this week that Nicole Kidman has put her apartment in the ultra-minimalist, Richard Meier-designed 176 Perry Street building in New York City up for rent. Get out your wallets, Kidman is asking $45,000 per month. The actress bought the 12th floor apartment back in 2003 for around $8 million. She and husband Keith Urban bought a new designer penthouse complete with "sky garage" at 200 11th Avenue earlier this year.

The 176 Perry Street unit is listed with Halstead Property's Richard Orenstein. The full-floor unit has three bedrooms. The light-filled condo is 3,785 square feet and has a dramatic glassy living room that stretches the full width of the apartment.

As the Real Estalker mentioned, whoever bunks at 176 Perry Street will get some posh neighbors including Martha Stewart's daughter Alexis who has a triplex unit, Calvin Klein, who owns a penthouse duplex, hotelier Ian Schrager, celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and Hugh Jackman who picked up Sun Microsystems co-founder Bill Joy's triplex for $21 million in 2008.

Joseph Gregory Relists In The Hamptons

When it comes to real estate if at first you don't succeed, list, list again. The Wall Street Journal reports that former Lehman Brothers president Joe Gregory has relisted his beautiful Bridgehampton mansion at a new lower price. This was our estate of the day back in September 2008 when it was listed for $32.5 million. We watched the price tumble to $27.9 million before it was taken off the market. Now it's back with a new broker, Beate Moore of Sotheby's International Realty, new listing pictures and a price of $25 million.

Gregory bought the 9,500-square-foot oceanfront home for $19 million in January 2007. The Hamptons home was a new eight-bedroom spec house which was built on 2.5 acres in Bridgehampton, New York. Gregory and his wife Niki spent several million dollars in renovations but reportedly only spent less than a month total in the home before it was first listed. The home includes two master suites and a a second floor deck, The property has a pool area surrounded by plush green lawns and a sandy path leading across the dunes and to the ocean.

Earl G. Graves in Scarsdale, Estate of the Day

The founder of Black Enterprise magazine, Earl G. Graves, has put his classic Scarsdale, New York estate on the market. The NY Times reported that the home went on the market soon after the 40th anniversary celebration for Graves' groundbreaking magazine. Graves and his wife Barbara E. Graves have lived in the home for 36 years and are looking to downsize to something smaller than this 10-bedroom manse.

The home was built in 1907 and the grounds include a 60-foot pool, cabana, tennis court, gazebo, playground, putting green, and gardens. The graceful colonial home has eight fireplaces, grand living and dining rooms, a conservatory and library. There is also a well-designed kitchen, recreation/media room, gym, wine room and ice cream parlor. The home is listed for $11.5 million with Susy Glasgall and Susan Greenberg of Houlihan Lawrence.

The Red Barn, Baryshnikov's Private Retreat Up For Sale

When I made The Red Barn in Snedens Landing, New York an estate of the day back in March I didn't connect it with the two-bedroom cottage that Mikhail Baryshnikov had previously put up for rent. But it turns out that they are part of the same property. Baryshnikov bought the home in 1981 and renovated it. But now he's interested in downsizing.

Snedens Landing is a place where some of the more privacy-minded celebrities have a home. The home began as a barn in the 19th century but was later converted into a residence and then expanded in the 1990s to create a spacious and beautiful home with wide open spaces and large windows offering a water view.

The property that I covered back in March is the whole 4.23 acre property which includes the two-bedroom cottage. As the Wall Street Journal recently reported, Baryshnikov's five-bedroom main house on 1.12 acres is also listed separately at $3.95 million. Baryshnikov and his wife Lisa Rinehart have added newer electrical and heating systems. A new room with with large glass windows is known as the garden room and Rinehart upgraded the kitchen. The WSJ says that the pair is planning to stay in the area and have renovated a smaller home nearby. Both listings are with Ellis Sotheby's International Realty.

Astor Courts Fails To Sell At Auction

In September we heard that the Astor Courts estate in Rhinebeck, New York, the property which hosted Chelsea Clinton's wedding, would be sold at auction. The was our estate of the day back in September 2009 and was listed for $12 million. Tranzon Asset Advisors, a national real estate auction firm, organized the auction in conjunction with H.H. Hill Realty Services of Rhinebeck, NY but the NY Post reports that the sealed-bid auction passed its October 14th deadline without yielding a buyer willing to pay above $7.5 million. The property is now back on the market with an $8.9 million list price.

The home was built at the turn of the century by John Jacob Astor, IV and his wife Ava. It was designed by Stanford White and was inspired by Louis XIV's Grand Trianon at Versailles, Astor Courts. The home was originally part of the Astor family's Ferncliff estate and Astor Courts (also known as the "Astor Casino" or "Ferncliff Casino") was designed as a guest lodge and sporting pavilion. The beautiful Beaux-Arts mansion was completed in 1904 and is on 50 acres. The expansive main living area has five bedrooms and spans over 15,000 square feet. The truly stunning details include the indoor clay tennis court topped with a glass ceiling and framed by Gothic arches and a white marble pool surrounded by arches and graced with a pale sky-blue ceiling.

In 1964 Brooke Astor gave the home to the Catholic Church. The current owners, real-estate developer Arthur Seelbinder and his wife, Kathleen Hammer, a former producer for Oxygen Media, bought the home in 2005 for $3.2 million and spent a fortune restoring it. Stanford White's great-grandson, Sam White led the restoration. The property is listed on the National Historic Register, and a Letter of Patent from New York State ensures access to the Hudson River in perpetuity and a Special Use Permit allows the property to be rented for corporate retreats, conferences and other functions.

Miranda Kerr Lists New York City Apartment

Now that she's married and expecting Victoria's Secret model Miranda Kerr is leaving her single-girl residence behind. The Wall Street Journal reports that Kerr has put her one-bedroom condo in the Jade Building in New York's Flatiron District on the market for $1.395 million (listed with Jaf Glazer of Conquest Advisors). Kerr married actor Orlando Bloom earlier this year and the pair are living in Los Angeles (in a four-bedroom home he bought in 2007 for $2.75 million). The Jade apartment is a corner unit on the tenth floor. It has floor-to-ceiling windows and two Juliet balconies.

The Jade is named for Jade Jagger, who helped design the project. Kerr's loft-style 904-square-foot condo has a pod-like free-standing cube in the center of the apartment that holds a small kitchen area and the bathroom. The cube has an oversized shower with a glass wall facing the middle of the 26-foot-wide living room. The WSJ reports that Kerr signed a contract to purchase the apartment for just under $1.1 million in 2006. Amenities for the building include two floors of shared terraced space with a reflecting pool and soaking tubs, a fitness room and a Moroccan-themed lounge.

James Brady in East Hampton, Estate of the Day

Today's home in East Hampton, New York was originally built in 1952 and purchased in 1978 by writer and novelist James Brady. The traditional white home is one of the simpler homes on the posh address of Further Lane (one of his books "Further Lane: A Novel" is a dishy murder mystery set in the area).

The six-bedroom home charms with built-in bookcases, an eat-in kitchen overlooking the backyard, a large front dining room, a formal living room with a wood-burning fireplace and a cozy family room with a brick fireplace and sliding doors leading to the slate patio/deck and pool area. The home has two separate master bedroom suites, one on each floor, and the one on the second floor has a deck. It's likely that the new owner will probably want to renovate, ripping out Formica countertops and wood paneling but hopefully they won't take too much of the old Hamptons style away. This classic home is listed at $4.9 million.

But that's not all that's going on in this 14-room estate. The home also has a gym, a lower-level ice cream parlor, a gym and indoor and outdoor pools. Whitewood Point, Estate of the Day

Today's home in Lloyd Harbor, New York has a fine architectural pedigree. Whitewood Point was created by the firm of McKim, Mead and White back in 1917 and is believed to have been done by Stanford White himself. The home is on 55 acres on a bluff overlooking Cold Spring Harbor. This striking estate has a chauffeur's cottage, caretakers residence, summer guest residence, greenhouse and a separate three car garage. We don't have many interior shots but what we've got reveals a sweeping staircase and plenty of water views through wide windows. This home is listed at $21 million.

Heather Mills Lists New York Apartment

Last year we mentioned that Paul McCartney's infamous ex-wife Heather Mills was selling her London flat with a list price of £3.75 million, now she's selling in New York City.

As Curbed NY reported earlier this month, Heather Mills paid $4.9 million for the full ninth floor of 173 Perry Street, the northernmost building in architect Richard Meier's trio of sleek West Village waterfront towers. Mills, who has reportedly faced money troubles despite a large financial settlement from McCartney and high profile gigs including a turn on "Dancing With The Stars," owns a dramatic two-bedroom condo.

The 1,808-square-foot apartment has panoramas north to the Empire State Building, south to the Statue of Liberty and west to the Hudson River and runs the full length of the building. It has two terraces. The open kitchen has a center island perfect for entertaining. Every detail has been designed by Richard Meier including temperature controlled window shades, heating system, Multi-zoned A/C, entertainment and sound system. Mills is asking $5.3 million and the property is listed with Prudential Douglas Elliman.

Kings Point Estate Hits The Market For $39.5 Million

A luxury mansion believed by some to have inspired Gatsby's 'West Egg' estate has gone on the market in Kings Point, New York. The 20-acre estate is situated at the tip of Kings Point on a private peninsula with more than 1,600 feet of waterfront property and panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline. One of the early owners of the home, John Alsop King Jr., is the namesake of Kings Point. He constructed the main residence in the early 1850s. Richard Church, heir to Church & Dwight Company, makers of the Arm & Hammer baking soda brand, purchased the estate in 1913 and threw lavish parties. It's not known if F. Scott Fitzgerald attended any of Church's parties.

The property includes the nine-bedroom main house, a marble swimming pool and a pool house that has been converted into a four-bedroom home with a wall of glass overlooking the water. There is an English garden, koi pond, vegetable garden, squash court and the Greenhouse and Courtyard residences. The Orchard House is a five-bedroom house built in 1970. Adjacent to the water is the Silo House and the Boat House and at the entrance of the long private driveway is the Cottage House. The property and its nine residential buildings are offered for sale at $39.5 million through Coldwell Banker.

dikembe mutomboFormer Houston Rockets center Dikembe Mutombo has made the most of his post-basketball career, raising money through his charitable foundation. He was praised by President Bush in his 2007 State of the Union address for helping to build the first new hospital in the Republic of Congo, Mutombo's homeland, in 40 years. The NY Times Big Deal column reports that the seven-foot-two-inch athlete has put his apartment at Trump Place in New York City up for sale for $4.5 million.

The unit is a three-bedroom condo on the 42nd floor. It is around 1,900 square feet and property records from Property Shark indicate that he bought the unit for $2.576 million in 2004. River House, Estate of the Day

I first saw today's home in the River House building in New York City listed last December when Cityfile brought it to our attention. At that point the home, the 14-room duplex belonging to Arlene Farkas, the ex-wife of real estate/retail heir Bruce Farkas, was listed with Stribling. The five-bedroom apartment was first listed for $15 million in 2008 and now has a new broker but the same price as it did nearly a year ago, $11 million.

The NY Observer points out that the River House hasn't always been the hottest property and certainly we've seen some units there linger on the market but it certainly does have some beautiful views. The Art Deco building was built in 1931 and overlooks the East River. The apartment has 10'6" ceilings and large windows. Rooms include a large living room, library, formal dining room, a chef's kitchen with a breakfast room and a second floor with five bedrooms plus three maid's rooms.
