InterContinental Times Square Opens In New York City

It's the summer of hotel openings in New York City. We saw the Andaz Wall Street recently throw open its doors and Cassa's opening is set for August. The 607-room InterContinental New York Times Square has opened for business with an official grand opening for July 29. The 36-story hotel is located along 44th Street and is the largest hotel in New York City to have LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.

The rooms features panoramic views of Manhattan and have floor-to-ceiling windows. The average guest room size is 350 square feet and rooms have walk-in rain showers and 42-inch flat-panel televisions. The hotel has 25 Panoramic Avenue suites and a three-bedroom, bi-level penthouse suite. The hotel will also be home to Todd English's newest restaurant concept, Ca Va, a French bistro-inspired restaurant. Other amenities include 24-hour business and fitness centers and a courtyard viewing garden in the lobby complete with a reflecting pool and sculptures.

Conan O'Brien's Sale Is Good News For New York City Real Estate

conan o'brienConan O'Brien is Majectic no more. The talk show host has sold his large duplex apartment at the Majestic co-op on Central Park West. The Wall Street Journal's Josh Barbanel says that the deal came in at close to the $29.5 million asking price. If the unnamed buyer closes in that price range it would be the second-highest sale of the year so far in Manhattan and would be the most expensive sale at the Majestic. The unit in the twin-towered building was created by combining two apartments on the 17th and 18th floors. There are a total of seven bedrooms, three terraces and two libraries. John Burger, a broker at Brown Harris Stevens had the listing. O'Brien moved to Los Angeles when he took over "Tonight Show" on NBC. In 2008, O'Brien and his wife Liza paid $10.75 million for a six-bedroom home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles. Looks like O'Brien and his family will be staying in Los Angeles for a while, especially because he has a new gig as a late night host for TBS.

The Rockefellers on East 94 Street, Estate of the Day

Every wonder how today's Rockefellers live? Today's townhouse listing on the Upper East Side of Manhattan gives us a chance to sneak a peek. The Real Estalker led us to the Sotheby's Realty listing for what is said to be the home of Mark and Renee Rockefeller. Mark is the youngest son of the late Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller, who was the 49th Governor of New York and the 41st U.S. Vice President (under President Gerald Ford).

The listing the Real Estalker Mama refers to as a "kooky crib" certainly boosts some of the most lavishly interesting decor we've seen in a while. Say farewell to money-doesn't-shout beige, this is a home that has been designed with some very attention getting decor.

The 25-foot-wide townhouse is 6,420 square feet. It has five floors plus a full basement with a wine vault, laundry room and exercise room. The four-bedroom home has one of the most amazing libraries I have ever seen, especially if you are a connoisseur of dead things. It has gleaming lacquered walls with animal skulls in front of a black and white marble fireplace surround and exotic animal heads and fur pillows atop tufted couches. The home makes bold use of wallpaper prints, notice-me-now furniture and dramatic light fixtures. As the Real Estalker aptly puts it, "this is not your blue-blooded grandma's townhouse." It appears to be the sort of house one either adores or abhors. Public records show that "Maren Properties" (which is likely an abbreviation of Mark "Mar" and Renee "Ren") of 30 Rockefeller Plaza paid $10.8 million for the home in June 2005. The home was on the market in 2008 for $18.5 million but can now be had for $15.5 million.

It's a busy spring for fashion designer Zac Posen. Following up his Fall 2010 show, which was inspired by 1940s futurism, Posen brings his styles to the masses with his first ever Target fusion line with looks spanning from New York punk to old Hollywood glamor. And now, Posen extends his brand into the New York City housing market, completing the entire interior of a new luxury boutique residence in Flatiron, 16w21, which opens next month. The green condominiums set a new standard for design, integrating a studious level of attention to every detail of the building, highlighting the way that where we live influences how we live.

A stunning new ad campaign, "The Model Apartment," tells the story of one resident bachelor, a model man inside his model apartment, photographed and filmed inside a built-to-scale replica of the building itself. Click below to see a gallery of the ads, and view the videos here. The voyeuristic assemblage, following the model man through his bedroom, living room and kitchen, dives deep into the beautiful interiors, and sets the stage for a continuous story of how gorgeous design defines our lifestyles.

Christopher Hyland in Chelsea, Estate of the Day

Oh decor! Today's home belongs to designer Christopher Hyland and his partner Constantino Castellano. The NY Times Big Deal column reports that the pair spent most of the last 10 years outfitting their apartment in the Chelsea Mercantile building in fine fashion. The 12th floor loft has 10- to 12-foot ceilings and has been well appointed with details like wood-and-plaster crown moldings, custom-built solid mahogany and mahogany-veneer doors with classical entablatures, Monticello-inspired pediments and custom-finished brass hardware. The vestibule leads to a central picture gallery and the residence has a Gothic kitchen outfitted in hand-carved oak with a Renaissance-style arch. The double drawing rooms are framed by Sicilian-Doric columns and the pleasingly stuffed library has custom-built crenellated bookcases. The furniture, rugs and window treatments were all custom-designed by Hyland using fabrics from his high-end fabric house. The wall coverings and window treatments come with the apartment and Hyland is willing to negotiate on some of the home's fine antiques if the new owner wants to preserve some of the home's current decor. This home is listed at $22.5 million.

The Fairchild Tribeca

Filed under: Estates, Real Estate Developments

The Fairchild development in New York's North Tribeca neighborhood has a bit of a celebrity appeal. James Gandolfini is said to be an investor in the project and owns a unit in the project which is a collection of 21 townhomes, penthouses and lofts, many with 22-foot ceilings, private balconies and terraces. Last year, the NY Post reported that Jessica Alba checked out a few penthouses in the building and Victoria's Secret model Adriana Lima also did a bit of browsing. As Curbed reported last month the Fairchild recently went over the 50 percent sold mark.

The project was newly constructed by Karl Fischer Architecture but designed to fit into the neighborhood with a traditional red brick façade and oversized arched windows . The interior of each home boasts plenty of natural light and walnut stained flooring along with fixtures and finishes handpicked by interior designer David Howell. The custom-designed Poggenpohl gourmet kitchen has a CeaserStone countertop and backsplash, Sub-Zero refrigerator, built-in Wolf cooktop and oven, Miele dishwasher, and stainless steel Sub-Zero wine cooler. Bathrooms include large travertine tiles, Calcatta gold marble countertops, walnut stained vanities, and herringbone detailed floors.

Amenities include a 24-hour attended lobby with full concierge services, refrigerated grocery storage, private outdoor space, and direct elevator access to each home. Residents also can also enjoy the Shibui Spa at The Greenwich Hotel, which includes a lantern-lit swimming pool and lounge under the roof of a 250-year-old wood and bamboo farmhouse. The hotel's fitness center includes state-of-the-art equipment and trainers available upon request. A unit currently listed at $3.995 million includes an indoor basketball court, three bedrooms and an outdoor terrace with 648 square feet of space.

132 East 62nd Street, Estate of the Day

Back in October we first heard that Suzanne Sheik, a jewelry designer and mother of singer Duncan Sheik, had put her New York City townhouse on the market for $17.5 million. Now the home has had a $2 million price chop so I decided to check it out as an estate of the day. Sheik bought the 7,000-square-foot townhouse at 132 East 62nd Street from the estate of late socialite Phyllis Cerf Wagner for $8.5 million in 2007.

The home is a 20-foot-wide residence spanning five stories. In the last couple of years it has gone through a major restoration adding state of the art appliances and updating the home with a modern but elegant look. The townhouse was built in 1871 by architect John Sexton and is part of the Upper East Side Historic District. The listing says that the bookshelves still hold literary treasures signed and annotated by authors such as: Faulkner Mailer, Capote, and Didion many of whom visited the house when Phyllis Cerf Wagner was in residence as did other famous guests like Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra (the home currently features an abstract oil painting by Frank Sinatra).

The main entrance opens to a foyer with carrera marble floors and glazed walls while the service entrance has wood floors, a mud room and leads into the pantry. The ground floor includes a chef's kitchen and a living/dining area that opens to a serene garden with water wall. The original staircase has been reinforced and leads to a floor with a drawing room, den and a street facing library/dining room. The third floor is given over to a master suite that includes a dressing room and a paneled study with a fireplace. The fourth floor offers two bedrooms, kitchenette and laundry and the fifth floor has three more bedrooms and a sitting room. Some of the furniture and fine art is available for purchase separately. This home is now listed with Stribling at $15.5 million.

Conan O'Brien Lists His New York City Penthouse

Conan O'Brien, is finally, sadly out at NBC (and with a sweet $45 million kiss off to boot) but that doesn't mean he is returning to New York City to live. In fact the New York Post reports that O'Brien's massive Central Park West penthouse duplex at the Majestic is "quietly being shopped around" for a heavy price tag of $35 million (alas no listing yet). The prime co-op unit is composed of two units, an 18th-floor penthouse that O'Brien bought in 2007 for around $10 million plus an already combined unit residence on the 17th floor. The south-facing home has three terraces and views of Central Park West. The twin towered Art Deco styled Majestic has 238 apartments. It was once home to some of the former heads of the Luciano crime family (later called the Genovese crime family) including Meyer Lansky, Lucky Luciano and Frank Costello. The Real Estalker reminds us that in early 2008, O'Brien and his wife Liza paid $10.75 million for a six-bedroom home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles, could he be staying in Los Angeles to take the helm at another late night show? Stay tuned.

Upper East Side Carriage House, Estate of the Day

This Upper East Side carriage house is a skinny slice of NY life in seven pieces. The lower level is a separate suite with a bedroom, kitchen, bath, gym, storage, etc. The second level is the first floor that is open space which is currently an art gallery/three car garage, the next level has the family room and a bedroom suite, the level after that, the fourth, is the main family living space with the living room, dining room and kitchen.
