Narrow Exception in Works for Nebraska Cigar Bars

A split Legislature in Nebraska is struggling over whether to exempt cigar bars from a statewide smoking ban. The clock is ticking, as it takes effect on June 1. The measure, Legislative Bill 355, would limit smoking to half a dozen bars across the state – specifically, locations that have installed the appropriate humidors and air-handling equipment.

This is not a proposed repeal of the smoking ban. Instead, it's a small exception that would allow adults to consume a legal product ... and it would prevent several businesses from forced closure. In today's economic environment, common sense would dictate that the government doesn't need to put even more pressure on companies that are struggling to survive.

To qualify under the bill, a bar would have to show the State Liquor Control Commission that at least 15 percent of its revenue comes from the sale of tobacco. Few establishments would qualify, according to State Senator Scott Lautenbaugh. Any that tried to skew the results – e.g., by "selling cigars for $15 with a free steak dinner" – would prompt a movement to change the law.

Again, common sense suffers, as it would be tough for a "cigar bar" to stay open if it was giving away expensive meals.

Whiskey Run Creek Winery For Sale

Some people finally go for the dream of owning their own winery but don't get to enjoy it for very long. Such is the case with retired executive director of Omaha's Metro Area Transit Robert Curttright, Jr. who spent his very short retirement planning and creating the Whiskey Run Creek winery outside Brownville, Nebraska before he succumbed to cancer. Now the small winery is on sale for just $1.6 million. The winery is on 3.8 acres, and includes a 100-year-old barn, a 5,400 square-foot steel production building, a 100-year-old brick cave, a wishing well and a waterfall. The winery can produce up to 10,000 gallons of wine per year and there are around 60 vines of Chardonel and Chambourcin on a quarter acre just outside the barn. Eight miles away is another Curttright property which is 122 acres and includes a house and machine shed. This property is on the market for an asking price of $650,000.

Omaha, Nebraska, Estate of the Day

Today's estate takes us to Omaha, Nebraska where mega homes have comparatively mini prices. Today's home is a lavish eight-bedroom home that aspires to French country style. It was built in 1972 so you can't exactly call it a McMansion although it has that feel. The home sits on over 3 acres and has over 19,000 square feet of space. The sprawling home has two pools, an outdoor and an indoor each with his and hers dressing rooms. There is also a two lane bowling alley, a recreation room with a granite wet bar and an exercise room. According to the listing the sellers are motivated and are including many personal items with the sale. It is listed at $2.095 million. After the jump, let's hope those personal items don't include the paintings.
