Harmon Karmon Cut Glass Speakers

Most speakers, no matter how expensive, are usually pretty ugly in my opinion and although these glass ones from Harman Kardon aren't exactly beautiful (I think they look like something out of an alien spacecraft) they certainly score points for being different and having a design that sets them apart from the herd. It's also fun to note that the cut glass exterior not only serves an aesthetic purpose but it also helps improve sound quality by reducing movement and vibration.

Sold in pairs in a limited edition of 3,000 units, the GLA-55 cut glass speakers will be available starting next month for about £500.

Jacques Brel's Notebooks Up For Auction

Sotheby's is set to auction off private collection of notebooks, autographs and memorabilia of iconic singer Jacques Brel. Brel, who died thirty years ago, isn't a household name here in the U.S. but is still much beloved in Europe and especially in Paris where the auction will take place on October 8. The sale consists of 94 lots, the top item being a notebook that Brel used to jot down the draft lyrics of his masterpiece Amsterdam which is estimated to sell for between 50,000 and 70,000 euros.

Sooloos Touch Screen Media System

Store your music, and add to it as you choose, on a 17-inch touch screen monitor with the Sooloos media system. It links to every room in your house, plus you can synchronize it at multiple residences. The system features storage, playback and control components that can be combined in a number of configurations. This is a new concept and a new product, so for those more technically-oriented who want to know more, go here to get the details, as we patiently wait for the site to get up and running. I just like the look of it, and would love to be able to get all my music going with just a few fingertip movements. If only I had $13,000 ...

Make Yourself Foundation, Charity of the Day

Bands and musicians often have foundations but not every band's foundation wins an award from eBay for their work. The Make Yourself Foundation, which was founded by the members of the rock band Incubus recently won eBay's 2008 Golden Ribbon Award for a nonprofit. The foundation auctions tickets and memorabilia via eBay Giving Works using a portion of their proceeds from all band-related activity and online eBay sales to fund various environmental and arts-related causes such as the Surfrider Foundation, Save the Music, Future Forests and Heal the Bay. Last year, the Foundation raised over $600,000 for causes like these through eBay. The band encourages fans to donate by buying Incubus bootleg CDs, Make Yourself Foundation gear or selling things on eBay through Mission Fish and donating to the foundation that way.

James Hotel Lollapalooza Package

Coachella has already come and gone but there are plenty of other summer festivals. For those of us somewhere between the all-night party and the early-bird special, these concerts form a particular problem. How can you still enjoy yourself without feeling old and exhausted. The best way is to go VIP. If you are interested in attending the famous Lollapalooza in Chicago this summer, August 1-3, the James Hotel makes it easy. Their VIP package includes a guestroom at The James and two VIP tickets to Lollapalooza which lets you skip out on all the heat and lounge in the shade at the LollaLounge which has lounge seating, a private viewing platform, lunch and dinner buffets, refreshments and the all-important air-conditioned restrooms. The James will even drive you their in a private car, give you a choice of one of the headliner's CDs (Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Kanye West, Nine Inch Nails, Wilco, The Raconteurs), and offer you a continental breakfast each morning. The three-day package starts at t $2,299 (a cheaper package with general admission tickets is $1.099).

Lusso Luxury Turntable

Just a few days ago my mother and I were talking about an old turntable at her house, and how none us of use it anymore. Well, if I had the Lusso Luxury Turntable, I would be willing to put away my CDs and iPod, for a few days at least, and dig out my albums.

Designed by German outfit Montegiro, the Lusso is marketed more like a European sports car than a piece of DJ equipment, according to Crunch Gear. This beautiful piece is built upon alternate layers of aluminum and black acrylic, including the topsy-turvy cone for the aluminum platter fitted with an acrylic platter and driven by a newly-developed, precise, high-end synchronous motor suspended within one of the cones. The connected cones have height-adjustable feet for set-up.The tonearm is carbon. All this works together to bring you -- are you ready? -- "a perfect world of sound: Between precise, crystalline highs and weighty bass is a generous, softly melting midrange that helps produce an ideal, musically balanced turntable."

The base version has three cones, a 10'' carbon arm from Da Vinci (model Nobile), the MG1 from the Montegiro family and a state-of-the-art pickup-system in titanium. The top-of-the-line model comes with four cones and two tonearms and includes a 9'' SME, model 5009 tonearm.

This musical piece of art will set you back €30,000, or about $47,000.

Herb Alpert, Music's Big Giver

Eight-time Grammy winner musician Herb Alpert is giving back to the music community in a big way. Alpert, a famed trumpeter with the band the Tijuana Brass, and one of the co-founders of the A&M record label in 1962, established the philanthropic Alpert Foundation in 1988. Last November he pledged $30 million to UCLA to create the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and the LA TImes reports that he has just given $15 million to the School of Music at the California Institute of the Arts. The school will be renamed the Herb Alpert School of Music. The gift will endow faculty chairs and provide money for scholarships and music programs.

Over the past 16 years the Alpert Foundation has given grants to CalArts in order to support the Dizzy Gillespie chair in music, the Dizzy Gillespie Recording Studio, music programs, scholarships and community education programs for children. WIth the $15 million, Alpert has now given nearly $24 million to the school. The foundation has also donated $100 million to musicians, students and other programs around the country.

How does a trumpeter have so much money? Alpert and Jerry Moss sold A&M records to PolyGram in 1989 for a reported $500 million and are also said to have picked up an additional $363 million in stock and cash when they sold a music publishing company to Seagram in 2000.

Sundance Institute, Charity of the Day

Although there are plenty of causes, both locally and around the world, that need money for urgent and life-saving purposes, there is something to be said for giving a little energy and money to saving the arts as well. What is the world without beauty and creativity? One such charity is the Sundance Institute, founded by Robert Redford in 1981 as a way to "discover, support, and inspire independent film and theatre artists from the United States and around the world," and to get those works out to audiences. Perhaps most famous for its annual "Sundance Film Festival," the Sundance Institute has many programs and different ways to get involved so get inspired and check it out.

Ford Motor Company and Fender have come together to create a very cool way to celebrate a love for both music and mustangs: the Ford Shelby GT500KR Stratocaster guitar. Limited to just 100, the guitar features the Colby logo, Shelby hood stripes, a handpainted body graphic, "Shelby" and "GT500KR" mother of pearl inlays at the 7th and 12th frets, and the hardshell case that comes with it is hand-embroidered with Ford and Shelby graphics. Each guitar is numbered, with the very first one (#000) having been auctioned off to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The remaining guitars are available for pre-order now and will be shipped sometime mid-April. $5600

Jimi Hendrix Boots Up For Auction

They may not look like much but these suede-fringed boots could be worth over $20,000. That's because they were worn on stage by iconic rock musician Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix was nearly as famous for his sartorial style as for his amazing guitar skills. The boots were worn by Hendrix onstage at Golden Gate Park on June 27, 1967 and will be part of Heritage's upcoming Music & Entertainment Auction, to be held April 4-6, 2008 in Dallas, Texas. The auction lot includes photographic documentation.

Fazioli Pianos: The Best Sound, The Highest Prices

People who are serious about music -- piano music -- have most certainly heard the name Fazioli. It's a brand that's been quietly but steadily building a reputation for itself in the most exclusive of circles since the 1970s, and daring to give the well-established Steinway name a run for its money. The Fazioli line, which includes some of the most expensive pianos in the world, starts with an entry level 5'1" grand piano priced at $86,000 and tops out with their priciest creation, the Brunei, priced at $409,000. They also proudly sell the largest piano in the world, and many others with unique features and appearances. Great sounds meets great design? You be the judge.
