India's Richest Man Moves Into Billion-Dollar Home

Mukesh Ambani, India's richest man and the man who is predicted to be the world's richest man by 2014, has finally moved his family into the $1 billion Mumbai skyscraper he has been building as a private residence. The home, which is named Antilla after a legendary island once believed to lie in the Atlantic Ocean, has 27 stories. Our sibling blog Housing Watch reports that the 53-year-old tycoon's new home is larger than the Palace of Versailles. It has underground parking for 160 cars, three helicopter pads and a theater that seats 50. The first few floors are given over to garage space and housing for staff takes up much of the middle section. The home also has a ballroom, several lounges, a health club, a dance studio and an elevated garden.

The home has a total of 400,000 square feet of space, room enough for Ambani, his wife Nita, their three children, his mother and plenty of household help. Business Insider has renderings from Hirsch Bedner Associates which show a home that looks more like one of the luxury hotels the firm has designed.

Indian Billionaire to Be World's Richest Man by 2014

Forget Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Carlos Slim: in four years' time the world's richest man will be Indian commodity king Mukesh Ambani (above), Forbes predicts in a new special report on the coming decade in finance and economics. The magazine estimates that Ambani's fortune will have swelled to $62 billion by 2014, outpacing the rest of the contenders, including current world's richest man Carlos Slim who's currently worth $53.5 billion. Mexico's Slim, who's made some risky investments including a large stake in the struggling New York Times, will be "hit hard by Mexican political and financial chaos," Forbes predicts. Ambani, 53, is currently the fourth richest man in the world with a fortune of $29 billion. He is the owner of Antilia, a 27-floor building in Mumbai which includes his family's private residence of 400,000 square feet, making it the world's first billion-dollar home and the largest private home in the world.

Mukesh Ambani's Big Pay Cut

The latest trend for billionaires around the world seems to be not raises but showy pay cuts. Bloomberg reports that India's Mukesh Ambani, Asia's richest man, took a 66 percent pay cut to "set a personal example of moderation" after a government call for austerity, thereby reducing his salary before he was asked to do so. Ambani, who is the chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd., will still take home what works out to around $3.3 million in salary plus his family, which owns 49 percent of the company, gets around $216 million in dividends. His younger brother, Anil Ambani is also giving up salary and commission from the five companies he owns. Mukesh Ambani is famous for his extravagance. He is currently building what will be the world's most lavish home, a $2 billion 27-story skyscraper and in 2007 he bought his wife and Airbus 319 plane for her birthday.

Ambani Buys His Wife An Airbus 319 For Her Birthday

Earlier this week I mentioned that Mukesh Ambani is the newly minted world's richest man and one of the world's most profligate spenders. He did his legend proud with his latest gift to his wife Nita. Ambani spent $59 million on an Airbus 319 for his wife's birthday. Her new toy is a corporate jet with a bar, a master bedroom, showers, an entertainment cabin with games, music and movies as well as a cabin for business with wireless and satellite systems. Nita turned 44 on Thursday.

Meet The World's Richest Man

We first became familiar with Mukesh Ambani when we saw the picture of his planned billion-dollar skyscraper home. It turns out that Ambani, who we already knew as the richest man in India is now said to be the richest man in the entire world skating past Carlos Slim, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and fellow builder of blockbuster homes, Lakshmi Mittal. BloggingStocks took a look at the actions of the top five reporting that Gates and Buffett are also the world's biggest philanthropists and that Slim has also pledged a desire to set up a $10 billion foundation. Mittal is busy buying up the world's steel production. Ambani is the chairman of Reliance Industries and his businesses include petrochemicals, oil refining, textiles, retail and biotechnology. Thus far his efforts on behalf of his fellow man just might be limited to subsidizing the 600 staff his new home is said to require.
