MTV's Real World Heads Back To Las Vegas, Will Tourists Follow?

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

MTV's "The Real World" is turning 25 and the latest season takes the usual unruly batch of seven strangers back to Las Vegas. The show was last in Vegas for the 2002-2003 season which lead to the creation of the Real World Suite at the Palms, a room that is still available and popular with guests. This time the filming was done at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. A high roller's suite in the hotel was turned into a four-bedroom party loft.

MTV's Diamond Moon Man

Jacob the Jeweler is at it again, creating a piece of heavyweight bling designed to attract attention. This piece from Jacob & Co. is their special diamond moon man for the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards which took place last night. The statue is an extreme version of the moon man award which is given to winners. High Snobriety writes that the Jacob & Co. version has 15 carats of black and white diamonds set in 14k gold. The statue weighs over two pounds and is worth more than $200,000.

How Much is Too Much for a Party?

This New York Times article about the TV show My Super Sweet 16 really got me thinking about spending. The show, if you are unfamiliar with it, is a reality program that follows the planning and preparation for some of the most expensive teenage birthday parties in the country. Many of the parties cost upwards of $200,000, not including the gifts of cars, clothes and jewelry that many of the lucky kids receive in addition.

The show has its fans and its critics, but the critics are always the most vocal, saying that such "celebrations of self... [are] an excuse to prolong the whiny, self-centered greediness that gives infantile a bad name." In contrast, a mother whose daughter appeared on the show said "Unless they were crazy or hated their child, any parent who was financially able would do it." Would they? Is there a point where the spending for a child's entertainment should stop?

Rent the Real World New York Apartment

The New York Observer reports that the West Village apartment used by the MTV for the Real World's 10th season is now on the market as a$35,000 rental. The surprise isn't the cost (after all the place is huge) but the very posh Tuscan-styled remodel job (they kept some of the architectural details but ditched the candy-colored walls). You can compare and contrast with the pictures of the apartment on MTV's website.
