Movado Bold Chronograph Watch

After firmly type-casting themselves as offering the museum dial watch and only the museum dial watch, Movado has been relatively successful lately in offering some different (and mostly) appealing designs to mix things up a bit. It is true that for years they have offered other deigns, but the museum dial watch is what seems to define them. So taking the "sun 12 o'clock" indicator and playing around with new designs, Movado has been able to successfully offer a range of "other" watches over the years.

An example is this is the simply named Movado Bold Chronograph. It comes in black and white (possibly a few other colors) . It has the simplicity of the museum dial, with a modern look and more utility. Don't miss the actual hour markers! The case is 42.5mm wide and comes in a plastic case (OK, "polymer") that is cheaper than coated steel or ceramic. The movement is a Swiss ETA quartz chronograph, and it comes on a matching leather strap. Price for this quite attractive fashion forward watch is $495.

Movado To Shut Down Retail Watch Boutiques

movado
American owned watch maker group Movado, will permanently shut down all of its Movado brand watch store boutiques in the US. There are under 20 Movado boutiques in the US - each located in mostly high population areas or large cities. Movado watches will still be sold by independent third party retailers. The Movado boutiques, which sold watches as well as Movado jewelry were apparently not seeing sales nearly on par with corporate expectations. Having personally entered a few, I can't help but blame unqualified, under-trained employees for at least some of the problems.

While Movado hasn't done spectacularly over the last few years, they haven't seemed to do worse that other competitor watch brands that have equally been hit by the 'tragically bad for luxury items' recession. Movado group seems to site a lack of overall profitability recently, and sees the closure of its boutique store division as a serious help in moving back towards profitability. Not all is lost though, Movado will retain one boutique store as its flagship retail location, the Movado boutique in Rockefeller Center in New York City. Most of the Movado outlet stores will remain in operation. In addition to Movado, the group also makes and markets ESQ and Ebel watch brands. Most famous for making the Museum Face Watch one of the most iconic timepieces around, the last few years have arguably seen some of Movado's strongest product offerings in years. Movado will place most of its efforts on its wholesale business, so consumers looking for Movado watches will simply go to one of their many authorized dealers.

Movado Series 800 Datron Chronograph Watch

A little blast from the past here brought to you by Movado. This year's line up has a rich array of non Museum Watch styles including this admirable Series 800 Datron Chronograph in a 40mm wide steel case with an automatic ETA 2894-2 movement inside. The Movado Datron was originally a watch from 1970, and interestingly has a top mounted round date window that is similar to the "sun" dot on the iconic Movado Museum watch. The oblong case is exactly what you think of when you imagine watches from the era, and the chronograph pushers and crown are also retro in design. The watch is the first from Movado's Collector's Edition watches, so I anticipate more re-releases of classics from Movado's past.

The watch case and bracelet are in something called "Performance Steel" which is a trademarked term for probably some special alloy or steel with a coating to help keep it from scratching. I hope it is nothing like Old Navy's "Performance Fleece" as it is the first thing that comes to mind when I hear the term. The dial comes in the shown black face with silver subsidiary dials, or the converse, which has a silver face and black subsidiary dials. Both are quite nice.

With a handsome retro look, high-grade ETA Swiss movement and utilitarian functionality, I think that the roughly $3000 price for this Movado Seires 800 Datron watch is a fair amount. Look for it in stores this month.

FDR's Last Watch, The Gold Tiffany & Co. Movado To Be Auctioned Off

This is a nice watch and a great piece of history. Franklin Delano Roosevelt is obviously one of the best known US Presidents and more so in the spotlight these days given the focus on his handling of the Great Depression, in relation to our own economic woes. This Tiffany & Co. signed watch (made by Movado) was given to him on his final birthday by his son-in-law in 1945. FDR wore the watch for the last few months of his life until he died in April of 1945.

The 14k gold watch includes the sought after Movado Ref. 44776 Triple Calendar mechanical movement. Aside from being an excellent example of the timepiece, the engraving on the rear of the watch is the source of most of the value with the personal inscription to FDR, "with loyalty, respect, and affection." The watch will be offered with authentication papers. Antiquorum's always conservative price estimate anticipates a closing price of $50,000 - $60,000 - likely to yield more.

The FDR Tiffany & Co. watch will be one of the lots available at the June 11th Antiquorum "Important Collectors" watch and clock auction held in new New York City.

Derek Jeter Movado Watches

Filed under: Timepieces / Watches, Sports

Derek Jeter's collaboration with Movado has resulted in four new watches sporting Yankees-style pinstripe design. The fanciest model in the Special Edition Series 800 Chronograph Watches is the Limited Edition Movado Series 800 Derek Jeter Chronograph in 18K rose gold. It is a series of 10 pieces and has a 47mm case with sapphire crystals on both sides and an alligator strap. Jeter's name and team number decorate the edge of the caseback, and the 18K central winding mass has his number on it. It sells for $25,000.

There is also a version in black PVD-finished "Performance Steel" and 18K rose gold with a black strap in kevlar-reinforced "XtremeResin". It retails for $7,700. Two Special Edition Series 800 Derek Jeter Chronographs in Performance Steel have a matching steel bracelet, blue or black stripe-textured dials with silvered subdials, and battery-powered ETA quartz chronograph calibers. They sell for $1,700.

Movado will donate $100,000 to Jeter's Turn 2 Foundation, which works with kids to inspire them to avoid drugs and alcohol and "turn 2" education and a healthy lifestyle.

Movado has also done a similar series with Tom Brady and though I will always be a Boston girl (and a Boston sports fan) at heart, I have to admit Jeter's watches are more stylish.

Limited Edition Movado Museum Hand Wind Rose Gold Watch

There are some who say you shouldn't mess with a classic, the limited edition Movado Museum Watch which will be shown at Baselworld this year blows that theory out of the water. The classic watch has a 45mm 18K rose gold case with a sapphire crystal caseback window showing the ETA-Unitas manual winding movement which is engraved with a "Movado Factories" inscription. The hot stuff happens on the front, a small red-framed dial cutout with an M-shaped bridge that bears the sub seconds hand. It looks like a superhero symbol and I wish I could give it to everyone whose name starts with the letter M. There will be 25 pieces manufactured.

Tom Brady Movado Watch

Filed under: Timepieces / Watches, Sports

Handsome and winning New England quarterback Tom Brady is more than just a good player, he also lends his name and/or face to a variety of products including Stetson cologne and Smartwater. He also has his own watch from Movado. The Tom Brady Limited Edition 800 Series Chronograph by Movado is inspired by Tom's
"impeccable timing on the field." It has a textured dial and an XtremeResin strap that is reinforced with Kevlar.. The watch has a steel case with a rotating bezel and uses a Swiss automatic movement. The production is limited to 500 pieces worldwide and it costs $2,500. It looks like it is already sold out at Saks online. The less fancy non-celeb version of the Movado 800 Series sells for $1,200.

The Indestructible Watch from Movado

Okay, so you can destroy this Movado if you really want to. But I dare you to successfully scratch it. Don't believe me? It's true. This watch is made of tungsten carbide, a material that is next to impossible to scratch.

Tungesten carbide has become popular in recent years for watches and men's wedding bands because it is so durable. Watches and jewelry look so beautiful when they're brand new or freshly polished by the jeweler. Now your watch can have that look everyday. It looks like the stainless steel watch that is so popular, but with a bit of a darker hue.

The suggested retail on these watches is about $800 to $1,000 more than the traditional stainless steel versions... but the like-new look of it is worth it.

Movado 60th Anniversary Watches

Movado has created a trio of watch styles to celebrate the anniversary of their Museum dial.

The Concept 60 Sapphire has a mirror-finish silver Museum dial set in stainless steel and enclosed in sapphire crystal so that it appears to float within the case. The stainless steel crown is also set in crystal. It uses an automatic ETA caliber 2892 movement. There is also a version with diamonds set under the crystal along the profile of the case. It is available on a gray satin strap or a stainless steel bracelet with sapphire crystal center links. Movado will create 500 of these limited series pieces. The watch is 38mm and is also available in other variations including a model with unset diamonds on black alligator strap, one set with diamonds on stainless steel, a sapphire crystal and diamond bracelet, blue sapphires on blue satin strap or black diamonds on black satin strap.

After the jump, check out the skeletonized Dot version and the huge 60mm version.

The Movado Diamond, Are More Facets Worth More Money?

A good cut can sometimes make a subpar diamond more brilliant but how many facets are necessary for maximum brilliance. We've seen a wide variety of facets used in trademarked diamond cuts but the most facets I have heard of used are on The Movado Diamond. Movado, the watch maker, also creates patented and proprietary 114-facet round and square cut diamonds. They say the cut brings out the brilliance and fire of the stone. I've checked these out in the stores and they do throw off a lot of smaller sparkles but they also cost a bit more than other diamonds of a similar size.

Movado M-125 Collection Watches

The latest versions of the Movado 125 Collection bring the 125 theme right to the front of the watch. The collection, which celebrates Movado's 125 years of watches, has included other watches without numerals on the front but with the M125 info on the back. The new watches include a 40mm watch for men with a sapphire crystal and a Swiss quartz movement. and a  32mm women's version with a double-length leather strap each with the numbers 1, 2,5 on the front.  I think I prefer the versions without numbers, they are more in line with the traditional Movado minimalism. The watches sell for  $1,095 to $1,295 at Movado boutiques.
