Solid Gold Monopoly Game at Museum of American Finance

Gold Monopoly Game
As if Wall Street needs another excuse to play with money earlier this month the Museum of American Finance unveiled a special solid gold edition of the famous finance and real estate game Monopoly. The game is made of 18 karat gold and numerous gemstones, with 165 gems decorating the property squares, photo-etching on the "Chance" and "Community Chest" cards, and 42 full-cut diamonds marking the number dots on the die. The game has an estimated overall value of $2 million, with the set of dice alone worth $10,000.

The gold and jewel-encrusted Monopoly board was created by artist Sydney Mobell and is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's most expensive. It's not for sale but is on loan from the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History for two years, and will be on display through October 2012.

For the astronomical price of $38,000 per pair, Italian luxury leather goods label A. Testoni is now offering the world's most expensive men's dress shoes. Testoni, founded in Bologna in 1929 by Amedeo Testoni, painstakingly handcrafts the Moro monk-strap model in the world's finest exotic alligator skin using the techniques of Norvegese, or Norwegian construction, for durability and added water resistance. Stiched with custom-made linen twine, the shoes are lined with glove-soft goatskin and adorned with a rich but discreet gold and diamond buckle. To make the eye-poppingly elegant footwear Testoni also employs a second proprietary process, called the piuma rapid, which requires some 200 manual operations to complete. Each pair is made up, deconstructed, and then put back together again in a patented method that results in a shoe as light as a feather yet which guarantees protection from hot, cold and humid weather.

$308 Million Monaco Penthouse Purchased by Abramovich Associate? [UPDATED]

A well-connected Luxist follower has written in to inform us of the identity of the buyer of the record-shattering $308 million Monaco penthouse (above) we just reported on. The new owner of the world's most expensive apartment we're told is Greek billionaire Constantine Alexander-Goulandris, a close friend and business associate of Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich. According to Wikipedia, the American-born Alexander-Goulandris, 47, who's based in Monaco, is an influential adviser to the Saudi royal family and the emirs of Qatar and Kuwait, as well as the leaders of the UAE and many of the world's largest oil companies.

In addition to Abramovich he's also close to Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin. Though not on Forbes' list of the world's richest people, he's said to be worth an estimated $15 billion thanks to investments in petroleum and energy shipping and real estate, including the Olympic Tower building in NYC. In addition to Monaco Alexander-Goulandris reportedly maintains residences in Paris, London, Antibes, New York and Hawaii. He also owns one of the largest yachts in the world, the Dubai-registered, 279-ft. Delma, and jets around on a Boeing 767 and two Gulfstream G550s.

UPDATE: The buyer was in fact a member of Dubai's royal family; Alexander-Goulandris acted as an adviser - read more here.

Rare Book Could Set A Record For Most Expensive Book, Again

Deep-pocketed bibliophiles will have the chance to bid for the world's most expensive book this December. There are only around 100 copies of John James Audubon's massive "Birds of America." The book, which contains 435 hand-colored prints and is more than three feet tall, last sold for $8.8 million in 2000. Sotheby's estimates that the book of four volumes could reach 6 million pounds ($9.25 million) when it is auctioned off at Sotheby's London on December 7, 2010. The sale will also feature a first folio of Shakespeare's plays dating back to 1623 which could bring in at least one million pounds ($1.54 million). These two amazing books come from the same collection, the estate of the 2nd Baron Hesketh, an aristocratic book collector who died way back in 1955.

The World's Most Expensive Car Wash

Filed under: Services, Luxury Cars & Autos

most expensive car washBuy an expensive luxury car and then run it through a $12 car wash? Or wash it by hand? The obvious answer is to wash it by hand but that takes time, something most high-end car owners don't have or don't want to spend. Enter Gurcharn Sahota, a luxury car enthusiast living in the UK who started a car-washing business five years ago that has since evolved into the world's most expensive car washing service. Charging up to £7,200 ($11,200) per vehicle Sahota can spend several weeks washing a car and uses over 100 cleaning agents, wax priced at $12,000 per tub, a computerized microscope for detecting minute scratches invisible to the naked eye, and a special clay compound for smoothing out imperfections. ''I treat every car like an individual project, Sahota says, "I want them to leave my workshop looking better than they have ever done. If you're paying £150,000 for a car then you're going to want it to be perfect."

Ironically, each wash starts out with a simple soap-and-water scrub using a lambswool mitten.

Sahota works alone out of his parent's garage although his business, called Elite Detailing, is expanding and he just recently opened a secondary workshop. His client list includes many well-known celebrity names (although he won't get specific to protect privacy) and many elite supercars including the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini, and his personal favorite: a McLaren F1 GTR. Check out video of the process after the jump.

Parnian Most Expensive Bed
Parnian Furniture has just unveiled what it's calling The World's Most Expensive Bed in a showroom in Scottsdale AZ. Designer Abdolhay Parnian apparently did not set out originally to create a piece that was outrageously pricey but instead one that had an impressive "wow" factor in its design. The end result is just as much fine art as it is furniture and took over 2 years to design and 8 months to make by hand. Made of Ebony, Sapele and Curly Maple the main attraction is the sunburst patterned circular headboard created by cutting 78 delicate wooden wedges and placing them so they come to a perfect point in the center. The bed also features gold and stainless steel detailing and is gadget-ready with built-in iPad holders and charging stations, touch-sensitive LED backlighting and nightstand lights, pop-up TV and computer screens that swivel, and even a few hidden compartments for who knows what. Get your own The World's Most Expensive Bed for $38,000-$210,000 depending on what options you choose.

Bel-Air Mansion Will Be Most Expensive U.S. Sale

The record set by Colorado's Bootjack Ranch for the most expensive property sold in the United States this year sure didn't last long. The Wall Street Journal reports that an Indonesian buyer is in contract to buy a ten-bedroom mansion in Bel Air, California for around $50 million. If the deal goes through it would set a record for the top sale in the U.S. besting the $46.5 million sale to of Bootjack Ranch to Texas energy executive Kelcy Warren.

We first checked out the property in 2009 when it was listed for a whopping $85 million. The home was built by Mohamed Hadid, a real estate developer who built Ritz-Carlton hotels in the 1980s but now creates lavish billionaire-ready estates like this one. The home known as Le Belvedere sits on 2.2 acres of prime land that includes staff quarters over the garage, a garage big enough for two limos, a swan pond, rose gardens, an infinity pool, large spa, outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven, fireplaces and courtyard dining for 100 guests. The home itself has 48,000 square feet of space and public rooms include a reception hall, formal living and dining rooms, an informal dining room, a family room with a bar lounge, a music room, a library, 5,000 bottle wine cellar and tasting room, a ballroom, commercial kitchen, screening room, game room and a Moroccan room. The main master bedroom suite including a sitting room, powder room, his and hers bathrooms and dressing rooms.

Last summer Hadid dropped the price to $72 million, a development that prompted Coldwell Banker listing agent Joyce Rey to remark at the time that at the price the home offered "a remarkable lifestyle and a great value." The $50 million sale price could be considered a deal considering that Hadid has said he spent $59 million to build the massive mansion.

Ultra-Rare 1936 Bugatti Atlantic Sells for Record $30-40 Million

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Auctions

1936 Bugatti Atlantic

If you thought the $12.2 million paid this time last year for a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa was a lot, you ain't seen nothin' yet. Reports are coming in that an extremely rare 1936 Bugatti has traded hands for between $30- and $40 million, easily taking the record for the highest sum ever paid for a single automobile, and by itself approaching the record held by RM Auctions for the highest amount traded in a single day in an automobile auction.

The automobile in question is known as the Williamson Bugatti, a 1936 Type 57SC Atlantic of which only two or three remain in existence. One is owned by Ralph Lauren, and the other belonged to the late Dr. Peter Williamson, a noted collector of classic Bugattis. Auctioneers Gooding & Company helped Williamson amass his collection, and have helped his estate liquidate it to other collectors since his passing. But the Atlantic remained until last. The private sale – details of which remain unconfirmed but reported by no less prestigious a publication as The Wall Street Journal and its Pulitzer Prize-winning automotive columnist Dan Neil – reportedly went to the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, California, so chances are the public will have ample opportunity to view this unparalleled piece of automotive art first hand.

Russian Tycoon Sets Champagne Splurge Record

dom perignon roseA new record was set for a wine sale in Britain recently when an unnamed customer spent $75,000, including tip, on a bottle of Dom Perignon in a London bar. The buyer's name hasn't been released but he's believed to be a Russian tycoon (Abramovich feeling spendy again, perhaps?) with good taste: the sale was for a methuselah of the prized 1996 Rose Gold vintage. The large bottle, dipped in rose gold and worth more than the champagne itself, holds 6 liters (1.59 gallons) and is obviously meant to serve a large group. The purchase took place this past Tuesday during an afterparty for the screening of the new movie "Boogie Woogie" at the Westbury Hotel and included a well-earned $15,000 tip -- according to witness reports within minutes of delivery 3 glasses of the pricey champagne had been spilled.
