Roger Moore Helps Launch "Bentley of the Seas"

Sir Roger Moore, famed for his portrayal of James Bond in the '70s and '80s, helped launched Swedish boatmaker J Craft's "Bentley of the Seas," the J Craft Torpedo (above), at the Monaco Yacht Show the other day. The Swedish boat building tradition is one of hand shaped hulls, rock solid construction and meticulous craftsmanship. The bespoke 42-ft. motorboat takes this practice to its extreme in every detail. The eco-friendly mahogany deck is lacquered 18 times for the perfect combination of gloss and strength. Every detail is meticulously hand finished, from the stitching on the leather upholstery to the finish of the bow chocks. No two Torpedos are exactly alike. Its Volvo Penta IPS engines can push the vessel up to speeds of 44 knots, the hand made steering wheel is from the same manufacturer that made the Ferrari 250 GTO a winner on racetracks and it even comes with a set of silver cutlery designed by HRH Prince Carl Philip of Sweden.

Eurocopter EC155 B1 Dauphin Concept for Superyachts

Eurocopter has just unveiled a new nautical-themed helicopter concept designed specially for use on superyachts at the Monaco Yacht Show, in partnership with luxury yacht broker Edmiston. The exterior of the twin engine Eurocopter EC155 B1 Dauphin by Andrew Winch Designs (AWD) is meant to evoke the contours of ocean waves via curving raised polished stainless steel trim lines. Yacht-inspired interior teak flooring, leather wrap-around adjustable sport seats fitted with carbon fiber back shells, fold-down central armrests, and "floating" LCD screens with headphones combine to offer the ultimate in luxury transport, along with bespoke touches such as the yacht's name etched in the rear windows. "The key idea behind my concept is endless comfort, be it on land with a Range Rover, at sea with a yacht or in the air with a helicopter," Winch notes.

Wally Launches Two New Sailing Superyachts

Monegasque yachtbuilder Wally, known for its avant-garde designs, will debut two new sailing superyachts at the Monaco Yacht Show later this month. The Wally 100 Indio (above) is a 30-meter (100-ft.) sloop combining all the amenities of a blue-water cruiser with the performance of a maxi-racer; the sleek 59-ton yacht can do 12 knots amd has a total of six cabins providing accommodation for 10 guests and four crew. The 40-meter Wally 130 has an innovative keel and steering system which makes the 130-footer maneuver like a racing 80-footer. Wally President and CEO Luca Bassani her to be the only cruising yacht in the world that can sail faster upwind than the record-breaking maxi racer Alfa Romeo.

Master of the Megayacht Turns to Timepieces

Last week we wrote about the new 200-ft. Roma megayacht designed by Espen Oeino, the world's top star in naval architecture. Like all of Oeino's megabucks creations, the yacht "combines the precision of fine machinery with indulgent finishes and the high-end amenities of a palace."

Now the Norwegian genius has turned his hand to designing a limited edition watch for Swiss luxury timepiece brand Scalfaro, which "evinces a passion for maritime sports married to traditional craftsmanship and sophisticated manufacturing."

The Scalfaro for Espen Oeino Edition watch will be launched during the Monaco Yacht Show in September. Limited to 100 pieces worldwide, the exclusive timepiece will be priced at 6,950 euros or about $10,000.

$200 Million Megayacht Stars in Monaco Boat Show

At the megabucks Monaco Yacht Show this past weekend in Monte Carlo, there was an estimated $4.5 billion worth of yachts on display, and none of the 98 craft on exhibit were under 100 ft. The biggest of them all however was the multistory, $200 million Anastasia (above) at 248 ft., recently completed by leading Dutch shipyard Oceanco for a Russian billionaire. Though the buyer's identity hasn't been confirmed, it's rumored to be Vladimir Potanin, the 25th richest man in the world with a fortune of $19.3 billion, the London Daily Mail reports.

The Anastasia features six decks, luxe quarters for 12 passengers and 20 crew members including a duplex master suite, a ten seat cinema, a discotheque with a laser light display and smoke machine, an artificial coral reef and 800-gallon fish tank, a swimming pool with a transparent wall, a sunbathing platform which converts into a stage for live music, a library upholstered in crocodile skin, and a hanger full of speedboats and jetskis.

Far from being an endangered species due to the grim economic outlook, these megayachts are more in demand than ever. In fact, the Anastasia is probably already worth more than Potanin paid for it. "People with $200 million to spend on a yacht tend to be above the credit crunch," Hugo Andreae, editor of Superyacht World magazine, tells the paper. "There are a lot them around, even if most are unknown to the wider world."

Super-Yacht Inspired Range Rover Concepts

Luxury yacht brokerage Edmiston has commissioned seven avant-garde marine designers to come up with a nautical-themed take on Land Rover's classic Range Rover. The entry shown here, by self-described "yacht design pioneer" Dickie Bannenberg, features wooden side panels and a tailgate that folds into a nautical-style wooden bench, complete with champagne holders, while the rear windshield converts into a sun visor to shade it. The winner of the design competition will be announced on Sept. 25th during the Monaco Yacht Show, one of the megayacht community's biggest annual events. Visitors to the show will be able to custom order a Range Rover in any of the seven designs, with a delivery time of three to six months and a price range of about $300,000 - $1.2 million.

Yacht Express, The Big Ship That Transports The Big Ships

Dockwise Yacht Transport has announced the schedule for its newly launched super ship, the 686-foot Yacht Express. The super ship is the largest vessel of its kind in the world with a semi-submersible dock bay so that yachts can be floated on and off. The ship is designed to transport luxury yachts anywhere around the world and joins Dockwise's fleet of four other transport vessels. The massive ship, which was built in China, will spend the summer traveling in China and Taiwan before heading to Australia, Mexico and Florida before arriving in Monaco in September for the famed Monaco Yacht Show.
