Ten Champagne and Cigar Pairings for the Holiday Season

Nothing compares to the perfect pairing of champagne and a cigar. Too often, cigars wind up with dark liquors, their natural partners. Rum, port, scotch and cognac are the norm for an after-dinner smoke -- not champagne. With the holiday season coming, of course, the preferred beverage will likely bubble, so finding the right cigars for the top libation will be crucial.

Fortunately, Vin Lee, CEO of the Beverly Hills Cigar Club, has agreed to help us out. As you prepare for the new year, take a look at the cigar and champagne pairings that he recommends, with both ubiquitous and rare products on the list. Lee says, "In this day and age, not everyone can afford a $50 cigar and a $300 bottle of champagne," said Lee. "Complementing a wonderful glass of champagne with a great cigar for the holidays is something everyone should be able to enjoy."

Rare Champagne To Benefit Motion Picture and Television Fund

On Oscar weekend, the stars did more than just sign autographs, some of them signed a wooden case containing Moet & Chandon Grand Vintage Magnum from 1929, the year of the very first Academy Awards ceremony. The bottle was displayed at the Governor's Ball immediately following the Oscars ceremony. It will be auctioned off at Christie's on June 6 as apart of a wine auction in the Hamptons. Proceeds from the special bottle will benefit the Motion Picture & Television Fund, a nonprofit organization that provides "relief" for those in the film industry who had fallen on hard times including health care, childcare, retirement living, and social/charitable services.

The Hostess Gift for 2009: The Personalized Wine Bottle

Personalized WineSometimes it's hard to know what to get the host or hostess of a party. Wine? Or is a card more personal?

Fortunately, we live in a world where you can combine the two ideas. In December, we saw Moet & Chandon offer personalized bottles via their NYC boutique, and at SignatureWines.com, you can get personalized bottles of wine, champange, water, and even gift sets and accessories.

Thank You, Congratulations, Good Luck, and Drink Me are all appropriate sentiments, and enhanced when you include both your name and the name of your host.

Prices at Signature Wines are surprisingly affordable; they start at $8 per bottle (and no, you don't have to order a whole case). Click through the gallery to see some of the lovely design templates they offer -- or you can upload your own, even with photographs! The bottles usually ship in three days.

The Classicist: LVMH's Distinctive Vintages

Filed under: Spirits, Wine, Books, The Classicist

French luxury goods conglomerate LVMH is best known for its marquee property Louis Vuitton, but the company has also amassed the world's most amazing collection of top-class wine and spirits brands under its Moët Hennessy group. The incomparable portfolio is celebrated in a suitably lavish new book called Distinctive Vintages ($200, right) just out from Flammarion.

Moët Hennessy owns too many luxury brands to list, but to name a few: Hennessy Cognac; Moët & Chandon, luxe Dom Pérignon, Krug and Veuve Clicquot champagnes; Belvedere and Chopin vodkas; Glenmorangie and deliciously smoky Ardbeg single malt Scotch whiskies; and the famed Chateau d'Yquem wine, synonymous with the finest money can buy.

The book focuses on the collection of fine French wines and spirits, personified in three regions that are "as noble as they are prestigious": Cognac, the ancestral birthplace of Hennessy; Champagne, home Dom Pérignon and its confreres; and Bordeaux, graced by the magical Château d'Yquem. It offers both a practical guide to the three regions as well as an explanation of the different vintages and results produced by the famed houses.

LVMH Chief Bullish on Luxury Brands

Bernard Arnault, chairman of luxury goods monolith LVMH, says that despite dire economic predictions and reports of a falloff in parts of the luxury sector the company expects profits to actually improve in 2008. "We are in a position to meet our objectives for a sharp rise in earnings in 2008," Arnault just announced at LVMH's annual shareholders meeting, according to Women's Wear Daily. "Every time we've been [in a difficult economy] we've increased market share. We've started the year strong. We will not pull off [of the accelerator]. We are focused on innovating."

Arnault, whose company recently added Swiss watchmaker Hublot to its portfolio of luxury brands, singled out handbags as a strong earner. "There are tons of new leather goods," he declared. "The Richard Prince bag for Vuitton" - one of our Handbags of the Day -- "has been an immense success and we won't be able to meet demand," Arnault said. "We can't produce the pieces fast enough." He also predicted strong sales this year for Fendi, calling it "one of the most important Italian brands on the market," and Dior as well -- no doubt thanks to Charlize Theron's captivating fragrance ads (above).

Personalize Your Mot

If you are handing out the Champagne in New York this season, you might want to swing by Boutique Moët, a pop-up store that has opened at 455 West Broadway in SoHo. For a flat fee of $30 you can have any pre-purchased bottle of Moët jazzed up with Swarovksi crystal letters. Personally, I'd rather just put the money toward more Champagne but the crystals do add a festive touch.

Hitler's Champagne Hits The Auction Block

Care for a little 70 year old champagne from Adolf Hitler's own stash that may or may not be poisoned? Sign me up!

Not really, I'm kidding.

But in all seriousness going up for auction this month on the 17th is a bottle of 1937 Moet et Chandon that was apparently taken by a soldier from the Reich Chancellery in Berlin in 1945 after the Nazis were defeated. And the poisoned part? There was a rumor going around that some of the champagne bottles had been poisoned via injections through the cork.

I might not be interested, but I can still understand why other people would be -- it is a piece of history. Just make sure you store it so there's no chance you're going to pop it open and drink it accidentally this New Years!

Temperley Joins The Champagne Handbag Crowd

Here comes yet another way to tote around the Moet. This time the Champagne company has commissioned designer Alice Temperley to create a Moet & Chandon picnic bag. Temperley's bag is a metallic canvas carryall with a detachable champagne carrier. The bag will cost around £950 and be available at Temperley London stores from September 1 on.

Other designer and champagne collaborations include:
Daisy de Villeneuve Moet & Chandon Picnic Tote
Karim Rashid Veuve Clicqot Love Seat
Andree Putnam Vueve Clicqot Box
Pucci Veuve Clicquot Bag

Picnic With Moet & Chandon

There is something about Champagne that makes designers giddy. Fashion Week Daily reports that Moët & Chandon has commissioned illustrator Daisy de Villeneuve to create a limited edition metallic gold leather tote. The bag has a pink lining and comes with the necessary supplies for a picnic in the park including a magnum of Moët & Chandon Rosé Impérial, four tulip flutes, and two lacquered picnic boxes that feature delectable treats created by the executive chef of Fred's at Barneys New York. The Champagne-friendly snacks match the pink drink with mini lobster wraps, salmon mousse, pink chocolate-dipped strawberries and pink truffles on order. The package costs $1,500 at Barneys New York.

Most Expensive Champagnes

Not including hard to find exotics, Krug, Clos du Mesnil 1995 tops the Forbes most expensive champagne list at $750 a bottle. Only 12,624 of the bottles were produced. Coming in at second is Bollinger Blanc de Noirs Vielilles Vignes Francaises 1997 at $400 a pop. Despite coming from the Pinot Noir grape, it is a fine golden color. Dom Pérignon Rosé 1995 make is in the top 3 of course at $350. Aromas of strawberries and cream show Dom’s style of delicacy and finesse.

Moet & Chandon NV Brut Imperial Rose

Not all rosé champagne is overly sweet and headache-inducing. The Moet & Chandon NV Brut Imperial Rose is fruity and light making it an excellent choice for pairing with appetizers or lighter meals. The champagne is a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes and the wine has flavors of white fruit, strawberries and nuts. It is selling on Wine.com with a matching pink isotherm bag which seems to highlight the fact that this is a bit of a girly drink. It sells for $69.99 from Wine.com and can be ordered until 11 a.m. on December 28 for New Year's Eve delivery.
