Design Within Reach Opens Tools for Living

Modern furniture haven Design Within Reach has launched the second of its two new stores, Tools for Living. The first opened its doors in SoHo last week, and the second has been drawing crowds to Santa Monica leading up to opening day on Thursday.

CEO Ray Brunner describes Tools for Living as a "modern general store" where you can pick up a heavyweight tape dispenser ($60) alongside a Stanley thermos ($42).

The LA location is inside DWR's existing mecca for oops-I-just-blew-rent-on-a-side-table at 332 Santa Monica Blvd. The New York outpost is at 142 Wooster St. Bonus: DWR's semi-annual sale -- including Tools for Living items -- is going on now and runs through Oct. 14.

Zen Side Table

I like the idea of a small, portable table that can be tucked in wherever it is needed. Whether next to your favorite reading chair holding your teacup, or scattered about the room for a cocktail party, these smart little platforms would work well with any decor. The Zen table, by Cattelan Italia, features rounds of reflective stainless above and below a gently curved wooden leg. Sold in pairs, the tables are available in 20" or 22" heights with 17" diameter tops. $618.

Jeanne Scandura Float Wave Chaise

Jeanne Scandura, landscape architect and founder of Float Furniture, intended her designs to evoke a sensual modernism. Using materials inspired by surf culture, she gives hard surfaces movement by sculpting them into graceful curves. The wave chaise is cast from fiberglass-reinforced resin and is suitable for use inside or out.
The chaise is available in several wood veneer finishes for indoor use or with a marine-grade coating in a rainbow of colors for outdoors. Prices start at $3,800.

Skram Furniture's Lineground Collection

The latest line from the popular furniture designers, skram is their lineground collection, a collection of solid wood furniture with a modern design created by Jacob Marks. The furniture is practical but full of simple flourishes that set it apart from other lines.

My favorite piece from the collection is this striking four-drawer sideboard which makes great use of negative space to create a striking silhouette. Prices start at $12,000. After the jump more pieces from this collection.

Jet Age Furniture

Another great find from the CA Boom show was Jet Age Furniture. The company is the work of two metal-loving childhood friends, Damien Mavis and Pat Arnold who both wound up with degrees in Mechanical Engineering. They have created a line of sleek and simple aluminum and glass desks and tables that are meant to match with Emeco chairs.  The dining table/desk shown here sells for $1995 and would look great in downtown loft. They also sell an aluminum and glass table that can be purchased with separate Tic Tac Toe Xs and Os.
