Mod Rocker

The Keinu Rocker isn't the only chair that updates the classic rocking chair, but it is probably one of the most modern in its use of materials in addition to updating the design to some degree. The Mod Rocker, on the other hand, uses a traditional material with an entirely new design. It is also kid-sized. The rocker is wide and low, made of bent plywood - from sustainably grown forests - with a maple veneer. It won Honorable Mention in 2006 I.D. Magazine's Annual Design Review and measures 16.25w x 22.25d x 18.75"h. Price: $320.

Panton Chair

While some trends from decades past are best forgotten, such as dark wood wall paneling, others deserve a place in our hearts and even homes. Relive the mod 1960s with this chic Panton Chair. The chair was the first single-material, single-form chair ever to be made, designed by Verner Panton in 1968. The stackable chairs are constructed from durable but not rigid polypropylene and are available in both a red-orange and white, if the former is too bright for your purposes. With its very contemporary lines, these would not look out of place in an upscale bistro, but would look equally appealing in a kitchen or office. Price: $225.
