Portland Place, Estate of the Day

I recently took a class in rug appraisal and it was the placement of large, obviously antique rugs over expansive wooden floors that attracted me to today's estate in St. Louis, Missouri. With nearly 13,000 square feet of total space, that's a lot of rugs. The home gets its inspiration from late 17th century English domestic architecture. The manor style home is on a nearly two acre lot that includes tennis courts, a swimming pool and a carriage house with space for four vehicles and guest or staff quarters.

The main home has an impressive 47 ft long entry hall that extends fully through the house from the front to rear. The home is full of dark wood paneling and has a large carved staircase. Other period details include ornate plasterwork, leaded windows, and front and rear entry stonework. The home has a library, living room, dining room, office butler's pantry and kitchen as well as a side entry gallery. The second and third floors feature bedrooms and dressing rooms and the third floor has a large playroom. This home is listed at $2.35 million.

Lake St. Louis, Estate of the Day

Kenny at Homes of the Rich drew our attention to this one, the home of Darain Atkinson the founder of the now bankrupt US Fidelis, a company that dealt in vehicle service contracts. This sprawling home on Lake St. Louis in Missouri is a nine-bedroom compound that has a beauty parlor, bowling alley, observation tower, meditation room, art studio, gym, safe room and more. Reports say that the listing price of $14.9 million is at least $2 million short of the anticipated construction and land-acquisition costs.

While the home was being built questions on how Atkinson could pay for the home began to arise. According to an article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the bankruptcy filing of US Fidelis shows 331 payments totaling about $7.2 million on expenses related to the compound's construction including charges from an architectural blacksmith, a landscaping company, a home theater company, lighting and millwork companies. A bankruptcy judge has frozen Atkinson's assets, he and his brother, Cory are accused of defrauding US Fidelis to the tune of around $100 million. Ironically, in an interview last year, Atkinson said he was building such a lavish manse to accommodate the charitable fund-raisers he planned to host. The home is on 6.7 acres with indoor and outdoor swimming pools and an eight-car garage.

Kingsbury Place, Estate of the Day

Kingsbury Place is one of the prettier streets in St. Louis. It is a private street home to a marble archway with its own fountain created by the same architecture firm that worked on today's home. The street is a showcase of homes built in the early 1900s that reflect a variety of architectural styles. This Beaux Arts-style residence was built in 1904 and has a Bedford limestone exterior. The entry hall includes a curved staircase with a beautiful glass skylight and hand-painted murals. The home is 7,680 square feet with five bedrooms, a paneled library, a solarium and a wine room. The second floor master suite has a dressing room and a bathroom with a mosaic. There is also a hidden door which leads to the study. Outside there is a garden with a pool and a dining pavilion that looks a bit like the one at Paris Hilton's house. It is listed at $2.195 million. After the jump, in the wine room a little bit of faux to go with your Beaux.
