Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

The Rezidor Hotel Group along with Italian fashion house Missoni has announced the the official opening of Hotel Missoni Kuwait, on March 1, 2011. The brand famous for its striped textiles and la dolce vita style already has a hotel in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The Missoni Kuwait is part of the Symphony Centre, a boutique emporium located in the capital's shopping district. For the hotel design Creative Director Rosita Missoni combines vibrant patterns and bold colors with turquoise, green and gold accents appropriate for a hotel facing the sea. There are a total of 169 rooms as well as meeting space, a gym, steam room, sauna and a pool deck overlooking the city. Dining options include the Italian restaurant, Cucina; Luna Restaurant, located on the 18th floor, which serves a fusion of Arabic-oriental and Mediterranean cuisine; Choco Café offering pastries, chocolates and a selection of small plates and the Pool Bar serving continental cuisine. Rooms have Bang & Olufsen televisions and mirrors in the bathroom that convert into televisions. Check-in is done via iPad. The hotel also will have a 1,500-square meter luxury Six Senses Spa, opening later in the year.

This is just one of many designer/hotel collaborations. Brands from Armani to Christrian Lacroix have gotten into the hotel business. Check out a round-up of some of the highlights over at the Huffington Post.

The Fashion Statement: Will 2011 be the Year of the Hat?

Hats worn for the express purpose of style hasn't been widely popular since the '20s. Millinery did have a brief comeback in the '80s when Princess Diana gave visibility to the British tradition of wearing hats for special occasions. Now Kate Middleton is again putting a modern face under the British topper. And numerous designers on both sides of the pond made the hat a central focus of their spring/summer runway collections. And then there is Lady Gaga entertaining us all with her theatrical chapeaus.

Not since the '80s have we seen so many hats! So we wonder: Could 2011 be the year of the hat?

Arguably the most buzzed about accessory of the season was the colorful, wide-brimmed hat like the one above at Prada. Badgley Mischka and Marc Jacobs channeled Jodi Foster in Taxi Driver with their bright pink versions shown over hair that had been appropriately curled and frizzed. Sally Field in The Flying Nun would have fit right in at Missoni where almost every model wore hats that flapped down the runway like wings. And Alberta Ferretti went boho by pairing floppy fringed brims with her collection of gauzy ethereal gowns.

Missoni Emerald Green Purse, Handbag of the Day

missoni purse
Ever since Louis Vuitton's Fall 2010 show, I've become enamored with ladylike purses. They exude an elegance and sophistication that pays homage to the 1950s while maintaining a timeless and stylish appeal. Rightly so, they're the perfect complement to waist-cinching, voluminous skirts and dresses but they also add a feminine and understated sexiness to jeans, high heeled boots and a slim fitting sweater.

The Missoni Purse ($1136) is just beautiful. With a base of glowing emerald green and sprinkles of black and white, the color palette draws you in. The shoulder strap is a combination of metal and tortoise - which makes for an eye catching detail. My favorite part of Missoni's bag is the interior caramel leather - it's a great color choice against green. And to complete the look there is a turn lock tortoise closure that is surrounded by oval shaped accents.

Missoni Silk Knit Sweater

Layering is key for surviving in transitional weather. It allows you to be prepared and comfortable no matter what you may encounter. While you'll need a little extra time to figure out what to wear, without looking like you just threw anything on that would provide warmth, it's worth the extra minute or two.

Missoni's Silk Knit Sweater ($450) would serve as a fashionable layering piece. Made with lightweight silk knit in a rose and coral shade, you can pair with a long sleeve shirt or a tank depending on the weather.

I especially like the unexpected pop of color given by a vibrant coral strip running along the side. The batwing sleeves are full with a scalloped edge with a cream trim along the bottom. Thankfully, Missoni's oversized sweater has a belt, which will offer you some shape.

The Fashion Statement: Italians Do It Better?

Milan is delivering the most exciting fashion weeks in years. Fashion critics have been giving rave reviews to Italian designers saying that, for the most part, the collections have been inspired.

One of the more subdued shows of the week, Giorgio Armani (pictured above), presented a spring/summer 2011 collection of entirely navy blue and black--not exactly the most spring/summery of colors. No matter, the fitted double breasted blazers, one-shouldered gowns and skirts over sheer leggings were stunning. Even more interesting: His models were turned out in turbans and veils.

Missoni for S.Pellegrino Limited Edition Bottle

Missoni for Pellegrino Water
The sparkling water brand S.Pellegrino has been working to promote the Italian luxury market and part of that effort is their first ever collaboration with a designer to reinterpret their label and bottle packaging. Fashion house Missoni was chosen and their vision resulted is this cheerful and very welcoming label that comes in four different colors and includes a signature knit sleeve with bright red star charms. It's quite the treatment for a bottle of water -- seems particularly well suited for a picnic or other outing where a little padding or coziness would be appreciated.

The specially designed bottles were released earlier this year and although they're technically a limited edition 30 million will be distributed to vendors.

Missoni Crochet Sun Hat

missoni sun hatMy daughter has gotten me completely into hats for the summer. After a month of talking about a particular had she wanted, she finally got her white straw fedora hat with a black sequin ribbon. It looks adorable on her. But I know for certain that I could not pull off a white fedora as well as my 9 year old. Luckily, Rigel has covered a beautiful collection of fedoras by Robert Gellar that I love. Classic, stylish and made for travel – perfect! So, in addition to the versatility of fedoras, sun hats are also a great summer accessory. The Crochet Sunhat by Missoni ($159) is a colorful sunhat that may not look like your go-to fashionable accessory, but for some reason I keep getting drawn back to this hat. And it looks like many other people have been drawn to the Missoni hat as well because in the past few days since I've come across it, it has sold out. I love the color scheme and the large brim to block the sun. This would look great paired with a maxi dress and sandals for the days when you are strolling through the park or leisurely walking through the city.

The Fashion Statement: All in the Family

oscar and moises de la renta

When it comes to fashion, families rule.

In Manhattan yesterday, Moises de la Renta, son of Oscar, debuted his very first collection, a limited edition T-shirt line called MDLR for a Spanish chain. Moises has been widely quoted for saying his designs meld his father's classic aesthetic with a younger, rock and roll edge. He said he went after traditional romantic themes: "from pretty patchworks with summer flowers in somber colors such as rose, violet, grey and black to graphic illusions which combine transparent effects, with shiny gems and adornments in between." For between $36 to $50, snag an MDLR T-shirt at Mango stores this month.

Famous fashion families seem to be popping up everywhere. Pasadena sisters Laura and Kate Mulleavy have zoomed into the fashion stratosphere in a relatively very short time with their Rodarte brand. Actress Sienna Miller and her sis Savannah are having success with Twenty8Twelve. And, of course, there are the Olsen twins with The Row and Elizabeth & James. Mother Tina and Beyonce Knowles run the House of Dereon. And Nathalie Rykiel has been working alongside her mother Sonia for decades.

Just a few weeks ago, Madonna is betting a tween line she's designing with daughter Lourdes Ciccone (called-what else?-Material Girl) will ring the registers at Macy's.

Hotel Missoni Edinburgh Plans June Opening

Filed under: Decor, Luxury Travel & Hotels

After many years of planning, Hotel Missoni Edinburgh is set to open in June, and is now accepting online bookings. The 136-room hotel is a collaboration of Rosita Missoni, one of the brand's founders, and The Rezidor Hotel Group. The hotel's palette is officially described as black and white, with splashes of color throughout, but as you'd expect from Missoni, the overall effect is more exuberant rather than restrained -- it's about layers of patterns and textures, in rich colors and in black and white too.(See lobby photo above.)

If this sounds chaotic, overall, design lines are kept modern and simple, which should balance out the effusive use of pattern and color. Still, I'm not sure I'd want to pack anything other than basic black in my suitcase without the aid of a stylist, lest I clash with the hotel!

In any event, black wardrobe works just fine to attend Edinburgh's Fringe Festival, the largest arts festival in the world which goes off August 7th-31st-- always a late summer highlight. With its central location, Hotel Missoni should make a fine base of operations for the festival, and as of now, still has rooms available.

Next up for the Hotel Missoni brand? A property in Kuwait, slated to open in Fall 2009.

Missoni Moves Into the Hotel Business

Filed under: Apparel, Luxury Travel & Hotels, Real Estate Developments

On the heels of Versace's newest palazzo project, fellow Italian fashion house Missoni is getting into the hotel act as well. The company, famed for its signature zigzag-striped knitwear (as modeled here by Kate Moss), is partnering with the Rezidor Hotel Group, owners of the Park Inn, Regent and Radisson SAS brands, on the project.

According to Rezidor, the 5-star Hotel Missoni will embody "a strong interest in design, an appreciation of detail, an understanding of food and wine, a belief in authenticity, a cognizance of culture from a contemporary point of view, and a strong and equitable set of social values." The first two branches are planned for Edinburgh in Scotland and Kuwait City, slated for opening in 2009.

Missoni creative director Rosita Missoni will spearhead the project in conjunction with fashionable Milan-based designers Matteo Thun & Partners. Thun has spec'd out a black, white and silver color scheme for the 129-room Edinburgh hotel, which is more business oriented, and "saturated" colors for the Kuwait City branch, which will be more leisure oriented. See the renderings below.

Missoni Bikini

I needed an excuse to buy this $455 Missoni bikini so I came up with two : You never know when an inpromptu weekend getaway will have you wishing you had a hot new bikini....plus summer is just around the corner! I was browsing Ron Herman and came across this gem. Missoni bikinis are tailored to fit a womans body in the most flattering way possible. They feel expensive and look exotic, like you are already on vacation, in Bora Bora. This suit has adjustable side tie bottoms, an adjutable halter tie neck top, and a single clasp closure at the back of the top. I have a similarly cut top from Missoni and it withstood a day at the waterslides without any horrifying moments, the closure is very secure! Like all things Missoni this suit was made in Italy. It's fully lined and made of 80% Nylon and 20% Elastane. The best part is that Missoni prints never go out of style!

Missoni Carousel Rug

Missoni is so well known for their bold designs and vibrant color schemes that it seems anticlimactic to choose one of their more staid patterns from the Missoni Home line. The Missoni Carousel Rug is anything but staid. The circular rug is 100% wool and is available in three different kaleidoscopic color combinations, a red/blue (pictured), a green/brown and a neutral. Each measures 86-inches in diameter and would make a great focal point for a sitting area. Price: £2,686.
