Moscow's Gloomy Millionaire Fair

Last month I wrote about the Millionaire Fair in Istanbul but it appears it didn't go over quite so well in Moscow this time. The Wall Street Journal's Wealth Report led me to the Guardian's report of the Moscow Millionaire Fair where yachts were going two for one and no one was buying. Socialite Ksenia Sobchak, the fair's master of ceremonies, applauded guests for showing ups saying that: "Everyone is a superhero for finding it in themselves to come here tonight, to try to bask in the luxury." The fair was the usual dazzling spectacle of exotic cars, jewels and free-flowing Champagne. Moscow still has more billionaires than any other city but many have seen their fortunes dramatically pruned over the last year. The end result seemed to be a rather grim spectacle of luxury where people weren't quite sure if they were celebrating what remains or mourning what once was.

The Millionaire Fair Heads To Istanbul

My colleague Jared Paul Stern has written before about the renaissance of Istanbul as a luxury destination. Even more than the opening of a W hotel or a Jimmy Choo boutique, the arrival of the Millionaire Fair in town symbolizes that Istanbul is on the radar of for luxury brands. The Millionaire Fair travels the world showcasing real estate developments, high-end jewelry and watches, luxury cars and other items to tempt the wealthy. This is the first time that Turkey is hosting the Millionaire Fair and an account in Today's Zaman says that several luxury hotels in ?stanbul were full due to visitors flying in to the city to attend the Millionaire Fair. Istanbul even beat out Dubai to hold the event this year. The fair features over 200 global brands as well as select Turkish brands such as Moonday Yachts, a jewelry collection from Topal Mücevherat and a three-wheeled Spyder motorcycle made by the Depar company.

Millionaire Fair Comes To Shanghai

The Millionaire Fair, which we last saw luxe-ing it up in Moscow, has taken their deluxe act to Shanghai. China Daily reports that the offerings at the fair include multi-million dollar villas, private islands, yachts, a 30-carat diamond, rare wines and much more. The picture here shows a gold bathtub which is attracting attention at the fair which started on Friday and ends on Sunday. The invitation-only event is China's first on such a large scale according to the organizers (although there was another lavish event last year). Admission costs 350 yuan ($44). The luxury market continues to grow by leaps and bounds in China and  The Porsche Cayenne Turbo 2 made its China debut at the fair as did the 2006 Range Rover Super Charge and the Jaguar XK.
