Arnold & Son True Moon Meteorite Watch

arnold & son true moon watches
English watch brand Arnold & Son offers up a new timepiece with a beautiful meteorite dial. Called the "True Moon Meteorite." The watch combines the time, a precise moon phase indicator, and of course the rare meteorite dial. The meteorite material is collected from desert in Arizona. The case is large at 46mm wide and available in steel or 18k red gold. The materials are carried over on the dial with large hands and applied hour markers. The rare type of meteorite is one that is as hard as steel.

The automatic calibre A1788 movement is capable of tracking the true phase of the moon, representing the cycle of 29 days, 12 hours and 44 minutes. The movement also has a date indicator at 3 o'clock. The case design is lovely and I like how an Earth orb is placed at 12 o'clock opposite the moon phase indicator at 6 o'clock. While large, the design is extremely classy, and perfect if you are a fan of meteorite dials (as I am). It is all matches to a black or brown crocodile strap. Look for it soon, priced between 25,500 - 41,500 Swiss Francs.

Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo-Soyuz 35th Anniversary Watch

A new Baselworld and a new limited edition Omega Speedmaster Professional watch right? Like clockwork... This year the piece is known as the Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo-Soyuz 35th Anniversary Watch, and is meant to celebrate the 1975 launch of the Apollo-Soyuz spacecraft - an historical mission due to its collaboration between the US and the then USSR. This was also the final mission with a space shuttle bearing the "Apollo" name. It is known as the first international space flight. In remembrance of this event, the watch will be limited to just 1975 pieces with a specially engraved caseback. The watch will also feature a special dial made from meteorite - probably the best feature of the watch. Personally, I love meteorite watches, and it has always looked pretty darn good on the Speedmaster Professional. You can see that the meteorite has been given two colors, a lighter tone for the subsidiary dials. Otherwise, the watch pretty much remains the same. With the same steel case and manually wound mechanical chronograph movement.

With all this focus on preserving the heritage of the moon landing and space shuttle events, I think that the Swatch Group (parent company of Omega), should step in and try to save NASA, from a short-sighted US Government that is contemplating the closure of the extremely important US treasure. A couple of hearings on behalf of NASA would help at least. That would be an event worth watching CSPAN for.

Dunhill Crushed Black Diamond and Meteorite Pen

London luxury goods firm Dunhill has come out with a limited edition line of writing instruments made from meteorite and crushed black diamonds. The all-black Sentryman Meteorite Rollerball Pen for $1,100 features an innovative lacquer finish containing authentic crushed black diamonds and meteorite stone for a stunning effect. The clip and detailing is done in brass coated with a black PVD finish that matches perfectly with the lacquer and gives the piece a strong masculine appeal. The meteorite was sourced from the legendary fields of Campo del Ciel in the Gran Chaco Gualamba region of Argentina where interstellar stones were first discovered in 1576.

Franc Vila Fva15 Column Regulator Automatic Watch

Franc Villa Fva15 Column Regulator Automatic Watch
I got to see this watch first hand recently as shown to me by Franc Vila himself. He is very proud of the simple functionality of the regulator style watch dial, but added with the asymmetrical case and meteorite dial. A regulator watch typically has two subdials (for hours and seconds), while the main dial is used for the minutes. You can see that theme being expressed here, but in what you can call a more stylish manner. The dial is partially skeletonized while the oblong nature of the seconds dial gives the watch a unique look.

The case is 48mm wide and in DieHard Extreme steel and titanium. The polishing is very good and the watch feels solid despite the complexity of the case. You'll notice that each Franc Vila watch follows the theme of "circles." With many of them all over the case in various forms. Few watches take the concept of curved lines and apply them as well. The movement is an automatic FV15 caliber with the "gold concept" rotor that all automatic Franc Vila watches have. I like that the watch also includes the date, as many watches of this ilk do not.

The Franc Vila Fva15 Column Regulator watch comes in a limited edition of just 88 pieces - which I think is the standard amount for all limited edition Franc Vila watches. The meteorite is applied well, and overall the watch is a good mix of sporty character and sophisticated visual interest. These are nice high fashion luxury watches that stand out with a different look but are comfortable to own.
