Scott Kay's BioBlu27 Wedding Bands

scott kay cobalt wedding bands
Jewelry designer Scott Kay wants people to look beyond gold, silver, platinum and even titanium when it comes to choosing a metal for a wedding band. He uses BioBlu™27, an alloy of 65 percent cobalt, 29 percent chromium, and six percent molybdenum from the metallurgists at Carpenter Technology. The 'bio' refers to the biocompatibility of the material, which can be used in medical applications like prosthetics and 'blu' refers to the cobalt in the material. The number 27 is the number on the atomic table for cobalt. The metal has superior strength, is resistant to corrosion and can be polished to a bright white, mirror-like shine. The metal is so strong it must be cut with a diamond plated tool. Scott Kay is marketing the bands to men and has created seven collections that are meant to symbolize the traits most desirable in a groom-to-be like commitment, devotion and strength of character. Most rings sell for $250-$300 each.

Dunhill Aluminum Luggage Collection

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Men's Style

dunhill aluminium luggage
London luxury goods firm Dunhill has a retro-futuristic take on travel this season with its new Aluminum luggage collection. Taking inspiration from leather examples discovered in the Dunhill archive from the Art Deco days of the jet set, the gentleman's suitcases suggest the concept of future travel in a unique fabrication of polished metal – the sort of thing a dashing aviator like Charles Lindbergh might have owned. Aluminum gives an ultra modern appearance to three different sized pieces, from briefcase dimensions to a large traditional suitcase size. The hard-wearing cases have been stripped back to their metal fabrication and updated to make them incredibly light and practical for use today, and each piece features the Alfred Dunhill monogram. Available in very limited quantities, they're priced from $1,165 to $1,305.

Iridium Now Available In Rings

Gold, silver, platinum and even other metals like palladium and titanium have made their way into rings. Now, for the first time, Los Angeles based rare metals manufacturer, American Elements is selling jewelry made from pure iridium metal. The challenge for working with iridium is that it has an extremely high melting temperature (4,435° F), more than 2,000 degrees above gold and 500 degrees above platinum. It is also very hard and brittle. American Elements designs parts for the NASA space program so it has the technology to work with this metal. The deep gray metal has a high luster and is the lowest tarnishing element. It is also extremely corrosion resistant and will not react with any acid. American Elements reports that one of the first buyers was a Rothschild banker in London who chose one for his wedding band. The pure iridium 6mm ring shown above sells for $2,530.

This isn't iridium's first foray into the luxury goods market. Iridium recently has also made its way into watches and has been used for years with other metals to strengthen the nibs on fountain pens.

Stella McCartney Metal Clutch, Handbag of the Day

As fun as it is to get dressed up for a party, if you have a lot of them on your calendar then the frills and lace might be getting old and hum drum. This metal clutch by Stella McCartney is the perfect way to add an edgy new vibe to your favorite cocktail dress, or even wear it with a cute pair of jeans to a summer bbq. Just beware, the brass metal might be neutral and go with everything but any colorful accessories you keep inside can change the whole look in a heartbeat! Brass metal with a white metal clasp closure, $895.

Precious Metal Portraits

The other day I mentioned a service that puts photos on diamonds. A more easily viewable but equally valuable alternative is offered by Precious Metal Portraits. They use laser technology to turn photos into a laser-engraved portrait or pendant on platinum, gold or silver. The products range in size from pendants that are as small as the size of a dime up to 4 x 6 inch portraits. The prices start small, sterling silver pendants are under $100, but get higher based on the type of metal and amount of metal used. A 3 x 5 inch rectangle in platinum sells for $12,995.

No Swimming in this $82,000 Golden Swimsuit

It's hard to find the perfect suit, but this gold weave suit out of Japan is apparently "better than feeling a million diamonds" and "like swimming in gold." Well it's more than "like" swimming in gold -- if you get in the water while wearing this baby you actually are swimming in gold -- the precious metal is woven right into the fabric. Valued at $82,000 the suit goes through a month-long weaving process where gold fibers about the size of a human hair are incorporated into the material. And also available in the same sparkling golden fabric is an even more expensive long dress valued at $243,900.

I wonder if they're scratchy or silky? And an important note from the designers on the swimsuit: it's not meant to go in the water.

What?! ...whatever.

Periodic Table

This Periodic Table is almost as simple as things can get, really. It's just four pieces of wood stuck together and painted, but somehow it works. Designed by One & Co., this piece was part of the launch of the new San Francisco-based furniture company called 'Council' last month. The metal coated wood block coffee table is made by coating a 48" x 48" x 13" block of wood with your choice of silver (natural, black, or pink). The resulting appearance is modern and bold, while keeping an organic feel with the natural wood-grain staying easily visible.

I love the design, but hate the colors.

Boltz Does Wine Storage

Wine storage is usually an elegant wood affair. Pretty, but heavy wood wine racks often take up a lot of space and may not work with modern decor. Boltz has taken their metal and glass, no frills aesthetic to the world of wine racks, creating simple utilitarian products that seem perfect for concrete floor lofts. The corner wine bar, shown here is made of solid steel and can hold 15 bottles as well as six to eight wine glasses in the rack above. It has has a glass shelf on the top rack and a triangular glass top. It sells for $299. Boltz also makes wine racks, wine towers and a countertop wine rack.

Fold Lamp

The Fold Lamp gets its name from the fact that it is actually folded out of one large sheet of black, powder-coated aluminum. Its overall shape is fairly traditional, so if it were not for the color, you might not even notice that there was anything unusual about it. The only thing that distracts from its all-black look is the red power cord extnding from the base. Due to the material, this isn't a great choice to illuminate an entire room, but it would make a good accent piece and would work on a bedside table, where the light needs to be confined to a relatively small area. Price: $340.

Metallic Space Curtain

The "space" in the name of the Metallic Space Curtain is likely to refer to the fact that the unusual curtain can be used to divide a space into two separate areas, rather than resemble something that is from outer space, although the glimmering piece could very well have been inspired by the night sky. The curtain is composed of over 2,000 individual squares of thin, platinum-colored metal. It measures 99"x99" and can be used either as a divider or as a wall covering. The piece was designed by Paco Rabanne Sofwear around 1970 for Baumann AG, Switzerland. Price: $14,000.

Issey Miyake TO 001 Watch

At one point, the "watch of the future" was a digital one, but as time passed, the stylistic virtues of analog watches began to outweigh the easy readability and multiple functions of digital watches. The fact that digital watches almost unfailingly attached to plastic bands for nearly two decades didn't help. Without a scrap of plastic in sight, Issey Miyake's TO 001 Watch really looks like the "watch of the future." It looks as though it has simply been sculpted from a piece of metal, yet it is fully functional. The ultra-sleek watch is entirely made of stainless steel, with a silvery dial, covered with a fine glass face, and a metal strap. It is packaged in a metal gift box, too. Price: $450.

Get Bent Chair

This chair is artfully formed from a single piece of aluminum, bent and cut to form a sleek, minimalist chair. The Get Bent Chair has a powder coating on top of the aluminum and is available in not one, but 186 different colors and finishes, both in matte and gloss, and the bottoms of the chairs are padded with small neoprene pads to protect your flooring. The chairs are also stackable, so the can easily be stored away if need be. Setting a rainbow of these chairs around a glass-topped dining room table would have home design magazine banging down your door. But at $2,400 each, you may want to start with just one before buying a set.

Amisco Manhattan Bar

There was a time when having a home bar meant only one of two things: either you had a full, wet bar or you had a wooden cabinet with some wine, a bottle of whisky and a few glasses stacked on top. Now, there are many non-permanent bars to choose from, like the stylish and modern Amisco Manhattan Bar. The bar is built on a metal frame and has a front panel of stainless steel. Behind the bar, there are three frosted-glass shelves, one of which is actually a workspace for the bartender, and plenty of room for a large collection of drink mixers and glasses. The colors for the bar are not limited to black and silver, as pictured, and can be custom finished with a non-toxic glaze to match the colors of the room you would like to keep it in. For an even more unique look, if you have enough room, two Manhattan bars can be combined to make one large semicircular bar. Price: $1020.

Gnome Be Gone

The Gnome-Be-Gone lawn ornaments are some of the best things to ever happen to the lawn-ornament in industry. The Fred Conlon designed metal monsters come in a pair and hunt  out pesky lawn gnomes wherever they lurk. Much as the gnomes are rumored to move about at night, the Gnome-Be-Gones also move in the dark, but will proudly hold their captive high in the light of day for all to see. The pair comes with a ceramic gnome, in the event that your neighbor is not thrilled with the idea of sacrificing one of their beloved lawn ornaments to the cause. Gnome-Be-Gones will work with other kitschy lawn ornaments, too, such as plastic flamingos and ceramic cat sculptures. Price: $125.
