Today's handbag is the Matt & Nat Varela Studded Vegan Leather Messenger Bag and although the name is a mouthfull the bag itself is pretty simple. Crafted completely of eco-friendly synthetic leather (which I love) and lined in fabric made from recycled water bottles it features a basic slouchy messenger bag shape with an oversized triangular fold-over flap. The only embellishments to speak of are a grouping of antiqued brass pyramid studs on the front flap. It has single adjustable shoulder strap and zip-top closure, along with several interior pockets. Go urban glam and eco-friendly all at once. $215

The Matt & Nat Japanese Paper BRMC Messenger may at first appear like a usual bag, but a closer look will show you just how luxurious a messenger bag can be.

The most unusual thing about this bag, besides its warm marigold color, is the printed vegan leather. The synthetic faux leather is crinkled in a "Japanese paper" style, and the effect is dazzling. The bag also features 100% recycled cognac faux suede lining -- true eco-friendly luxury.

The bag is 14"W x 15"H x 1"D and has interior pockets as well as five exterior pockets, all zippered and adorned with antique brass hardware. This is a perfect find for the college girl with everything, or the on-the-job designer.

It is only the middle of September and already it seems as though the "back to school season" has long since passed. Given that it started in June, perhaps it's not all that surprising. With a distressed, slightly fraying edge, the Canvas Messenger Bag from Juicy Couture is meant to look like it is well-worn and much-used, although it is surely not meant to invoke the idea that it was used to carry books back and fourth between classes, despite the fact that the bag is likely to be used to that very purpose. Distressing a bag by carrying too many school books just doesn't seem to fit with Juicy's intended image. The messenger bag is made of green cotton canvas and has golden hardware accents. The leather shoulder strap is detachable and, to give the bag a bit of a vintage touch, the top flap ties with a thin cord instead of a snap. Price: $295.
