Matt & Nat Japanese Paper BRMC Messenger, Handbag of the Day

Matt & Nat Japanese Paper BRMC MessengerThe Matt & Nat Japanese Paper BRMC Messenger may at first appear like a usual bag, but a closer look will show you just how luxurious a messenger bag can be.

The most unusual thing about this bag, besides its warm marigold color, is the printed vegan leather. The synthetic faux leather is crinkled in a "Japanese paper" style, and the effect is dazzling. The bag also features 100% recycled cognac faux suede lining -- true eco-friendly luxury.

The bag is 14"W x 15"H x 1"D and has interior pockets as well as five exterior pockets, all zippered and adorned with antique brass hardware. This is a perfect find for the college girl with everything, or the on-the-job designer.

The Matt & Nat Japanese Paper BRMC Messenger is available from Bloomingdales for $275.

"The Original" Leather Postal Messenger, Handbag of the Day

Although cutting edge style is always fun and plays an important role in fashion, there are some designs that just can't be improved upon. The original leather postal messenger bag is one of them, and now thanks to JCrew you can have one for yourself. Recreated in true-to-detail oil-tanned leather this bag is styled to be historically correct and match what U.S. postal workers carried from 1868 to the 1970s (when they switched over to blue nylon bags). Hand-oiled, hand-stained, hand-riveted, and sewn in the techniques of old, this bag will not only last a lifetime but it will get better and better as the years go by. $795

Lacoste Canvas Messenger Bag, Handbag of the Day

It is only the middle of September and already it seems as though the "back to school season" has long since passed. Given that it started in June, perhaps it's not all that surprising. In any case, there are still many great bags that are suitable for toting around campus or back and forth to the office, if you're out of school but still have a lot to carry. The Lacoste Canvas Messenger Bag is from the designer's new casual line. It is made of durable canvas and comes in both blue and red. The clean lines of the bag, which is very roomy, are actually highlighted by the front zippered pocket and the extended snap tabs on the front flap. Price: $125..

Juicy Couture Canvas Messenger, Handbag of the Day

With a distressed, slightly fraying edge, the Canvas Messenger Bag from Juicy Couture is meant to look like it is well-worn and much-used, although it is surely not meant to invoke the idea that it was used to carry books back and fourth between classes, despite the fact that the bag is likely to be used to that very purpose. Distressing a bag by carrying too many school books just doesn't seem to fit with Juicy's intended image. The messenger bag is made of green cotton canvas and has golden hardware accents. The leather shoulder strap is detachable and, to give the bag a bit of a vintage touch, the top flap ties with a thin cord instead of a snap. Price: $295.

Hugo Boss Porthole Messenger, Handbag of the Day

Men don't usually carry handbags, but a messenger bag can offer all the benefits of a purse while sparing the carrier some raised eyebrows. The Hugo Boss Porthole Messenger is a sleek leather bag with a canvas trim and aged brass hardware. It measures 15.5" x 12" x 4", so it is large enough to fit books, folders and even a small laptop, though the fabric-lined bag isn't padded enough for it to replace a real laptop case. It has a front flap, which secures with two buckles and conceals a small front pocket. The wide canvas and shoulder strap is easy on the shoulders and adjustable in length, so the bag can be carried under one arm or worn across the body. Price: $450.
