Traveteq Adds Trash Messenger and Trash 17-Inch Laptop Bags

Travelteq describes itself as "travelers for travelers," as in having products for those on-the-go made by those on-the-go. It would be far more accurate to amend that to "discerning travelers for connoisseurs of travel." Earlier this year the company launched a line of totes called "Trash" consisting of Florentine Vachetta leather outers in black (Panther) or brown (Fox) that envelop a water-resistant nylon compartment section available in three hues. The line has now been added to with the Trash Messenger, Trash 17-inch, and Trash Cougar bags.

The series was already brimming with conveniences for movers and flyers: exterior business card and newspaper pockets, a loop for sliding the bag over your roller suitcase, sunglass, cellphone and pen pockets that you could access without unzipping the bag, and four interior compartments – two large and two small. That makes nine, count them, nine in total. With the pocket thing handled, a clamor arose for a larger bag and one that could be slung over the shoulder, needs that the Messenger and 17-inch totes now fill.

As for the slightly smaller Trash Cougar, we're not sure what kind of traveler that bag caters to but we suppose you'll know if it's you. Every Travelteq bag is made by hand, in Italy, and they start at €395 ($495 U.S.) for the Trash original.

Ipa Nima Reina Messenger, Handbag of the Day

ipa nima messenger bag Doesn't a dusty pink handbag seem perfect for the summer? It would complement all the typical summer colors that we find ourselves being drawn to and for the days where we end up wearing a pair of jean shorts, a white tank top and a pair of Yosi Samra gladiators, a pop of pink will serve our outfit just fine.

The Reina Messenger by Ipa Nima ($368) can be worn comfortably on your shoulder or across your chest and has roomy interior with multiple interior compartments, exterior front and side zippered pockets. The leather is super soft (you have to love nappa leather) making it lightweight and so much easier to carry. The Reina would be ideal as your go-to summer handbag.

Still, it is the perfect size for carrying a novel with you to brunch (to await your late friends), or for hiding a camera and goodies for a day of sightseeing.

The Marc Jacobs Palais Royal Messenger Bag comes with gold hardware and a classic gold Marc Jacobs nameplate, and is available from Saks Fifth Avenue for $650.

Dior Silver Messenger Bag, Handbag of the Day

Rarely would I say that a men's bag is sexy. More often than not, the bags are simply functional and the better-looking ones usually have a sleekness to them that makes them pleasing to the eye. Dior's Silver Messenger Bag, however, is sexy and bold. The bag is made of silver-coated canvas with a natural leather trim that should take on a coppery, aged look as the bag is used. The hardware is all brushed palladium. The front flap has touch-tape closures and, inside, there is houndstooth lining and pockets for pens, mobile phones or other gadgets. The shoulder strap is completely adjustable and the whole bag measures 15" x 9.5" x 3.25". Price: $720.

Juicy Couture Canvas Messenger, Handbag of the Day

With a distressed, slightly fraying edge, the Canvas Messenger Bag from Juicy Couture is meant to look like it is well-worn and much-used, although it is surely not meant to invoke the idea that it was used to carry books back and fourth between classes, despite the fact that the bag is likely to be used to that very purpose. Distressing a bag by carrying too many school books just doesn't seem to fit with Juicy's intended image. The messenger bag is made of green cotton canvas and has golden hardware accents. The leather shoulder strap is detachable and, to give the bag a bit of a vintage touch, the top flap ties with a thin cord instead of a snap. Price: $295.

Hugo Boss Porthole Messenger, Handbag of the Day

Men don't usually carry handbags, but a messenger bag can offer all the benefits of a purse while sparing the carrier some raised eyebrows. The Hugo Boss Porthole Messenger is a sleek leather bag with a canvas trim and aged brass hardware. It measures 15.5" x 12" x 4", so it is large enough to fit books, folders and even a small laptop, though the fabric-lined bag isn't padded enough for it to replace a real laptop case. It has a front flap, which secures with two buckles and conceals a small front pocket. The wide canvas and shoulder strap is easy on the shoulders and adjustable in length, so the bag can be carried under one arm or worn across the body. Price: $450.

Alchemy Goods messenger bag

In the spirit of Marcel Duchamp -- who turned a urinal into one of the twentieth century's most famous works of art simply by signing his name on it -- Seattle's Alchemy Goods is turning junk into bling.

Alchemy, as all fashionistas who paid attention in Western Civ know, was the Middle Ages' primary fascination: the quest to turn something worthless (lead) into something precious (gold).

Alchemy Goods designer Eli Reich takes this basic theme and runs with it. He scavenges the bike shops and junkyards of the Pacific Northwest and produces some very cool bags. From the bike shops, he gets old inner tubes and builds tough, waterproof sacks that are guaranteed for life. From the junkyards, he gets old seatbelts that become the straps for his bags.

The best part? He keeps all the writing, patches, stains and logos that were orginially on the tubes and seatbelts. That way, you know you've got a one-of-a-kind.

It's $148 for a messenger bag, by the way. Can medieval alchemists compete with that?
