New Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class Leaks Out Ahead of Debut

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Pioneering the increasingly popular four-door coupe segment, the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class came out well ahead of the competition. So far ahead, in fact, that while rivals are just hitting the market now, Mercedes is already gearing up for the next generation.

When the original CLS ceased production, we knew its successor couldn't be far behind, and now the first images of the new CLS have leaked onto the internet. As you can see, the new model has retained the outgoing one's unique profile, but updates with design cues from the Shooting Break concept. Engines are expected to range from a new 3.5-liter direct-injection V6 all the way up to the 5.5-liter, twin-turbo V8 AMG model. Watch this space for more as Benz prepares to release the new CLS in all its glory in the near future.

Hoping to get your hands on a Mercedes-Benz CLS? You may have to wait a little while, but when the wait is over, it should be worth it. Because the current model has ceased production in anticipation of its successor.

The pioneer of the four-door coupe body-style that his since spawned everything from the Volkswagen Passat CC to the Aston Martin Rapide has been in production since 2004. At the Paris auto salon next month, however, Mercedes is expected to unveil the all-new model, drawing its inspiration from the F800 Style and CLS Shooting Break concepts.

The last of the current-generation models, a CLS 550 with AMG sport package, is being delivered to an American customer.

Mercedes-Benz made a big splash back in 2005 with the introduction of the CLS sedan, which was based on the midsize E-Class but sported much more attractive bodywork. The automaker is set to continue pushing those boundaries with the new CLS Shooting Break Concept, which is just now debuting at the Beijing Motor Show.

First things first: While the moniker is more often spelled 'shooting brake,' Mercedes tells us that the correct spelling is actually 'break,' as in breaking a horse that draws a carriage. Whatever. It's clear that the CLS Shooting Break will be compared to the BMW 5 Series GT, and we think the Benz has a much more distinctive and attractive appearance.

The base engine for the next CLS will likely be a turbocharged and direct injected 3.5-liter V6 engine that will offer a little over 300 horsepower. Optional will be a turbocharged 4.6-liter V8 that puts out around 435 horsepower and over 400 pound-feet of torque. Power will be sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Naturally, we can also expect an AMG version of the next CLS that should get the automaker's turbocharged and direct injected 5.5-liter V8 with up to 563 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. A sedan is sure to join the Shooting Break when the car finally makes it into production. Check out the high-res image gallery below and see the full press release after the break.

Mercedes-Benz Sculpture Previews Next CLS

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Automakers are always looking for intriguing new ways to preview what they're working on next, and this is what Mercedes brought to Detroit this year: a sculpture that's tipped to preview the next-generation CLS. Pioneering the "four door coupe" segment, the CLS has been a popular vehicle for Benz, so the new model will have big, svelte shoes to fill. And from the looks of things, it should be up to the task.

Looking like a show car draped in a sheet, the sculpture shows an SLS-inspired grille, with a sleek roofline, long hood and bulging wheel arches. That's all we have to go on for now until Mercedes pulls off the iron curtain, so have a closer look in the gallery below.
