Mercedes-Benz Reveals Updated CL-Class Coupe

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Not many marques play at the upper end of the luxury coupe market, but alongside the likes of the Bentley Continental GT and Ferrari 612 Scaglietti sits this, the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class. Essentially a two-door version of the top-of-the-line S-Class sedan, the CL has been revealed for 2011 bearing a number of significant updates.

The bodywork has been revised for the new model, but the real harbinger is what lies underhood. Introduced first in the CL is the new twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V8 that displaces nearly a liter less than the engine it replaces yet produces nearly 50 horsepower more. The result is 429 horses and 516 lb-ft of torque, capable of propelling the CL550 4Matic (available exclusively with all-wheel drive) to 60 in 4.9 seconds. The even more powerful CL600 packs a twin-turbo, 5.5-liter V12 with 510 horsepower and 612 lb-ft of torque for a 4.5-second sprint to 60.

Several new safety systems – including Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Adaptive High Beam Assist and Night View Assist – are part of the revised package as well, along with a new COMAND info-tainment system with USB and SD card input and a 7.2 GB hard drive.

We love the Mercedes CL-Class. Those are the big coupes, the ones you might not have noticed at all until one happened to catch your eye, after which you asked yourself "Is Mr. Big in town?" They've been out for ABOUT 15 years now but they don't get an awful lot of attention - like the B2 bomber, they are large objects impressively impervious to radar.

In 2007 the second generation CL was cashed out like a million shares of Allianz and the current, third generation CL was christened. A completely new car, it intends to be equal to that initial investment and pay a fat profit. Wouldn't you know that fat profits aren't the only thing you can associate with this car: it has so much fat-cat ambiance to it that after a week behind the wheel of a 2010 CL550 we kept wondering, "What else can we buy? Does anyone now if Ecuador is for sale?"

Birth of an Icon: Mercedes-Benz Releases Special-Edition CL550

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Some logos are a dime a dozen, but some stand the test of time. Mercedes-Benz' iconic three-pointed star definitely falls in the latter category, standing out as one of the most highly recognized emblems in the world, inside or outside the automotive industry. As well it should be: it's been around for a hundred years. Back in 1909, Daimler registered the patent on the logo, and a few weeks later in the same year, Benz did the same with theirs. A century later, Mercedes-Benz is celebrating the only way it knows how: with an even more exclusive edition of one of its most high-end luxury coupes.

The "100 Years of Mercedes-Benz Edition" is a special package that can be ordered, in limited quantities, on the V8-powered CL coupe. Sold overseas as the CL500, in North America it's labeled the CL550 and comes standard with the company's proprietary 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. Special touches for the special edition include a custom interior featuring tan leather with contrasting dark grey touches, from the top-stitching to the carpeting and headliner. The exterior is painted a special dark grey as well, and comes with unique five-spoke 20-inch wheels and a new ground-effects aerodynamics package. Pricing hasn't been announced for the United States, but in its home market, Mercedes is charging a substantial €17,850 ($23k) premium for the special edition, on top of the €132 base price.
