Hlaska Ties Have a Secret Theme

Donatella Versace Inspired By Barack Obama

Fashion designer Donatella Versace took a timely inspiration for her latest fashion show. The woman who once said she wanted to dress Hillary Clinton in more feminine outfits and less pantsuits has turned her attention to Barack Obama. Versace dedicated her Spring-Summer 2009 collection presented Saturday evening to Obama. Of course she had some fashion tips for the Presidential candidate as well, she urged him to shed the tie and "jazz up the shirt." Her collection was certainly short on ties and long on jazzy colors, offering suit jackets with double lapels or no lapels at all, slim shiny trousers and shirts in summery pastel shades of pale blue, lemon yellow and lavender.

Hermes to Open First Ever Men's-Only Store in NYC

French luxury powerhouse Hermes will open a men's-only store, the first of its kind in the world, across from its Madison Avenue flagship in NYC this fall. The 6,000-sq.-ft. space, designed by Rena Dumas of the architectural firm RDAI in Paris, will carry the brand's entire range of men's leather goods, watches, clothing, sportswear and accessories, and will have a full floor devoted to custom and made-to-measure merchandise, DNR reports. As my colleague Deidre Woollard related earlier this month, Hermes recently announced that first-quarter sales increased 13.4 percent to 415.1 million euros, or approx. $621.7 million. Sales in the Americas were up 23 percent. Men's merchandise accounts for 45 percent of the luxury brand's total sales, DNR notes. Last June, the company opened a 5,000-square-foot shop in New York's financial district with an emphasis on menswear, catering to the Wall St. crowd.

Dior Radioactive Denim

If you've ever felt the need to spend $600 on a pair of jeans you are in luck. Dior designed these "radioactive" men's jeans that are made of 100% cotton, in a dark wash, with a shiny metallic finish. The five pocket cut and button fly appear pretty standard, as does the slightly tapered leg, so my guess is you are paying for the unique silver "radioactive" look, unless they also repel spills.... or are wind resistant, who knows! Tom James Company Personalized Pinstripe Suits

The Tom James Company has created an intriguing new idea for your business suit, putting your name in pinstripes. Starting in January 2008, the company will offer the Tom James Signature Collection, which is a collection of custom suits, made of the fabrics available from Saville Row's Holland & Sherry. Anyone can personalize their suit's pinstripes using family member names, company mottos or even, in some instances, logos. The Signature Collection suits are available for both men and women range from $13,000 to $25,000.

Manolo for Men

Manolo Blahnik is much beloved of the ladies but he hasn't done much for the men lately.That's about to change. Vogue UK reports that Manolo has created a six-piece collection for men. The designs that Vogue shows are not for the average man. Sure, the red Oxford isn't too far out there but it would take a special man to pull off the leopard-print sandal or the lace-up peep-toe slingback. The collection should be out in stores in February.

Tom Ford's New York Store

Earlier this month the Tom Ford New York store opened its doors for the first time, located on Madison Avenue. Tom Ford himself was present giving personal tours of the 1930's inspired shop full of not only the designer's menswear creations but also decor from his own collections, such as beaver-skin rugs and Lucio Fontana artwork. According to Tom the store's appeal will be based on "exceptional service and immaculate clothes." Other features available to you while you shop include the fact that everything is customizable (from clothes to fragrances), a wet bar, and if you get hungry during your appointment? Well there's lunch delivered by a maid or butler.

Louis Vuitton Menswear Spring/Summer 2007

Now that summer is in full swing, it comes time for the designers to share with us what they have in store for next summer. Louis Vuitton, under the helm of Marc Jacobs and the actual designs of Paul Helbers, debuted a collection that marries Victorian England to Hawaii for an interesting spring/ summer 2007. Normally, I would hesitate at anything that boasts of being "subtly mismatched," but the collection manages to come across as relaxed euro-trash on vacation. (That's a good thing) Men's trousers are well cut and jackets are very well suited to an evening out. Several of the bags are certainly regrettable, but the ones that rock surely cover up those other problems. All in all, the collection is good, although I don't know about the overuse of large lapel pins.

Zilli, French Dandywear

The Moodie Report has a piece on the expansion of French luxury menswear brand Zilli. The brand has recently opened a new boutique at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. Zilli makes luxe leather accessories and menswear that features a variety of fine materials such as python, alligator, Egyptian cotton, ostrich and sable. The styling is perhaps a bit dandified for the American male but just right if you are looking to go international and it's especially popular with Middle Eastern clients. They also do made-to-measure items in their Lyons workshops. A handful of boutiques in the U.S. sell Zilli but if you want the full experience you will have to travel to one of the Zilli boutiques scattered around the world.

Thomas Pink's Mogul Shirt

Does your shirt really need a pocket for your cigar? Yes, says Thomas Pink. According to Fashion Week Daily, they are rolling out this shirt called the Mogul. The Mogul comes in pink or white and has a split breast pocket designed to hold your cigar on one side and a lighter or cutter on the other. The shirt costs $195 and the pocket is box-pleated so it will lay down nice and flat when not in use. Wear it with their previously released iPod tie and you may never need to own a man-purse.
