J.Crew Opens Madison Avenue Men's Shop

Under gray skies and the first honest wisps of fall, J.Crew unveiled its latest Men's Shop on Madison Avenue in New York City.

For a brand whose rep has been synonymous with rep stripes, wide wale corduroy and the Ivy League uniform, it's surprising that it took J.Crew this long to arrive in the neighborhood, since the Upper East Side is certainly the nexus of all that. Located on the corner of 79th Street, in a space formally occupied by a bank, the store is in many ways the apogee of J.Crew's recent menswear translation of preppy as Nantucket by way of Japan. The shop itself feels like an Alpine lodge, with knotty pine wood paneling covering walls, floor and seemingly everything else. Populate that with Quoddy boots, Barbour jackets, and lots and lots of plaid, and you've got what amounts to catnip for fans of the trad, Americana, or workwear look (whichever you prefer).

Some might choose the slightly pejorative "urban woodsman" though, and you can't really blame them. The trend metastasized to the point of self-parody, what with all those bearded 20-somethings head-to-toe in buffalo plaid, buying $250 axes and signing up for butchering classes. But you have to commend J.Crew, and head menswear designer Frank Muytjens, for navigating it without lingering to the point of definition. This fall season seems to be more about celebrating classic looks, classic brands-and as expressed by this new store-creating a shopping experience with some style and relaxed refinement (none of which you're going to find at American Apparel). And they do, balancing out the aforementioned ruggedness with Thomas Mason spread collar shirts and cashmere navy suits, both exclusive to this location.

SEW NYC, Tequila and Bespoke on Moss Street

Rockers and film stars aren't the only ones who trek down to Mott Street to spruce up their wardrobes. SEW, the acronym for Scott Evan Wasserberger, is a magnet for just about any high-profile man who wants the best quality and the best fit. This season that means a lightweight cashmere jacket, totally hand-stitched and tailored, that feels like a second skin but looks high-bling. No surprise that some clients have ordered several in spite of the hefty $3400 tab. Wasserberger has worked in the biz for 20 years, moving to his intimate boutique two years ago.

SEW is also a hotbed of hipsterdom. The anti-preppies favor his flamboyant smoking jackets in velvet paisley or silver-gray sharkskin blazers with sky-blue lining. Equally popular for warm weather are his custom-made shirts in assorted bold plaids with spread collars, about $225, and cotton blazers in solid colors, $1650-$2300. For women, the choices are slim, but irresistible: men's style shirts in light blue with white collars and cuffs. Passersby are so intrigued with SEW they stop in regularly. Most prefer Wednesday night (5:30-8:30) when drinks and music are on the the house and browsers can check out what makes SEW so popular with the sartorial savvy.

Mackage Opens Second Pop-Up Boutique in NYC

Mackage Opens Second Pop-Up Boutique in NYC
Mackage is so pleased with sales in its first NYC pop-up boutique, in the Meatpacking District, that it has opened a second, this time in SoHo. Open through December, the store will carry the Canadian company's Fall/Winter '09 collection for men and women including butter-soft leather bombers, shearling styles, and its ever-popular Puffy down-filled winter coats. The line is popular with such celebrities as Hilary Duff, Jessica Biel, Elizabeth Hurley, Eva Mendes, Kristen Bell, Will.I.Am. and John Legend, to name a few. And a non-celebrity -- me. The coats are beautiful, practical, and better-priced than I expected for such style and quality. The SoHo store's details can be found in the photo above.

Men's Exotic Skin Items, From Luxury Accessories Intl.

New York City-based Luxury Accessories International (LAI) began as a leather importer in New York in 1953, importing crocodile skins from South America and selling them to makers of shoes, handbags, and other leather goods. In 1971 the company expanded the range of skins to include python from Indonesia, ostrich from South Africa, and lizard from South America. Today, the company makes a variety of high-end products for men and women, but I'm going to focus on the men. Where to begin? Belts, bags, a flask, a watch box, portfolios, wallets ... all custom dyed all over the world and made with skins selected by hand for cutting at the LAI manufacturing house in Long Island City, N.Y. Orders are individually cut and sewn, and often customized, but the LAI boutique at 35 E. 65th St., NYC, offers custom pieces.

You know something's expensive when every piece on the Web site is followed by: "To purchase, please contact the LAI Boutique: 212-794-3874." So I can't help you with pricing, but if you see something you like, give LAI a ring. See the gallery for a few of the beautiful pieces.

Great China Wall Hoodies

If you've ever felt the urge to drop over a grand on a hoodie, look no further than Great China Wall. Simply the most luxurious casual gear that money can buy, Great China Wall designs feature crystal detailing and limited edition tattoo type airbrushing reminiscent of Ed Hardy graphics. Made of that trendy delicate soft cotton, you definitly won't want to put them in the washer/dryer...this brand is far too high maintenance for me and truthfully I'd be a little wary of any man sporting it! Hoodies range from $900-$1400, check out the collection online and decide for yourself if it's worth the loot or just another brand that's trying way too hard.

Tom Ford Sunglasses and Men's Apparel

Now, who doesn't love Tom Ford. His Midas touch has permeated so many levels of the luxury industry, his absence has been hard to bear. Well, he's back. As previously reported, Tom is working with Estee Lauder on a cosmetics line. He also has a nifty line of sunglasses out as well. Available at Neiman Marcus and other fine retailers, the oh-so stylish line features sunglasses named for famous Americans; Kennedy, Fonda, Farrah. With a twinge of retro/70's glam, these glasses bring high style back to accessories. What celebrity won't be caught by the pool sporting these bad boys?

On to other Tom Ford news. In a recent article with GQ, Tom stated that he is pursuing a bespoke men's line and hopes to have a store open in New York by November 2006. Apparently, there is going to be ready-to-wear as well as custom tailoring. Tom wishes his line to be a "blend between an Italian fashion company and a classic tailor." Here's hoping that Midas continues his golden reign over global fashion.
