A Spa a Man Can Love?

The Lodge at Woodloch Pines
We all know that spas don't tend to be man caves. There's nothing macho about walking around in a soft fluffy robe, about sipping water infused with cucumbers or citrus, or contemplating the condition of your pores. Spa cuisine is also not something that's designed to appeal to a strapping appetite -- you can't score any swagger points by eating steamed veggies. And that's before you get to yoga, meditation, and aerobics classes -- all wonderful activities, but not something a guy's guy is going to brag much about.

John and Ginny Lopis, owners of The Lodge at Woodloch in Hawley, Pennsylvania and spa industry veterans, knew this too, and so when they opened their own spa, about 90 minutes from New York City, they decided to purposefully make it a place where a guy would feel comfortable. This comes through in the décor of the common areas, which, true to its name, is lodge-inspired, with a bit of a feel of a traditional study thrown in too -- there's lots of wood, metal and rich cozy upholstery. This also comes across in the range of activities available -- the spa is set on 75 wooded acres, and it has its own lake, so activities include hiking, mountain biking, kayaking -- and there's a golf course right across the street. What's more, the food that's served here is certainly in the genre of spa cuisine -- healthy, lower fat, calorie conscious -- but it's not about deprivation: there's a full wine list, for instance, desserts, chocolate and treats. Ginny Lopis jokes that they think of it as a five-star ashram.

When you walk through into the spa wing, you're in more familiar territory, but it's new-age light and bright, but still, nothing aggressively pink or feminine anywhere -- except maybe in the treatments, for instance, the Lavender Garden Dream, which is a polish, wrap and fully body massage or Chamomile Flowers, a body polish and moisturizer.

Even with all of this man-bait in place, the clientele is, as you'd expect, mostly women. When I visited a few weeks ago, I noticed many mother-daughter, girlfriend getaway types of spa-goers -- but I also spotted more than handful of men, holding up their half of a vacationing couple. The menfolk were a bit furtive, and not much evidence during the day, as I took a class called "Breathe and Change Your Life", stretched in yoga, and jogged in the woods. But early one morning, as I watched knots of women striding with great purpose on the spa's fitness trail, creating flashes of neon lime and bright pink power-walking through the trees, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted one guy, going off to fish in the lake, his pole over his shoulder.

2009 Omega Constellation Watch For Men

There hasn't been a new Constellation from Omega in years, but 2009 brings a totally refreshed look that is true to the original and resists too much modern 'edge.' 1982 gave us the first Constellation watch, which was a very unique timepiece at the time - when the angular look was in. The new model retains the iconic bracelet with links and bars, the bezel claws, and the bezel lined with Roman numerals (on those models without diamonds of course).

The global appeal of the watch requires an array of models to fit regional tastes. The case is sized up to 38mm wide and goes down to 35mm for the men's models. Inside the watch is Omega's in-house made Co-Axial caliber 8500 or 8501 movements - which were certainly not available in the originals. Quartz movement versions of the watch are also available. For me the look has always been an acquired taste though there is nothing to dislike about the sensible good looks of the watch. In addition to the steel version, editions of the watch are available with gold accents and different color faces. Look for the new 2009 Omega Constellation models soon.

Simmons Jewelry Co. Steel Collection for Men

Adam Gregory of 90210Simmons Jewelry Co., run by the family of Russell Simmons and Kimora Lee Simmons, has a terrific line of jewelry for men that exudes style and strength without being too flashy.

Seen here on the new 90210's Adam Gregory are items from both their Wrist and Neck collections which retail for $155 to $7,000 here on the Simmons Jewelry Co. website. There is also a Finger collection (of rings) for $195 - $3,500.

Normally, for a very special occasion, the customary gift for a man is a pen or a watch. But what if he already has a pen and a watch? Some men I know have their father's or grandfather's watch, or the pen their parents gave them when they graduated from grad school. These gifts have a high sentimental value and are unlikely to be outshone by any price tag.

The Simmons Jewelry Co. Steel Collection is the perfect gift alternative for the man who already has a pen and a watch.

The collection combines diamonds with rubber and stainless steel in modern bracelets, chains, dog tags, and rings. We compiled a gallery of the most extravagant and attractive items below.

King Skull Cufflinks

Looking at the creepy little silver faces on these King Scull Cufflinks by Tateossian makes me feel like giggling. I'm pretty sure that wasn't the intent, considering they're scowling and all, but something about the looks on their faces and the way they're wearing their little crowns makes me feel bad for them, like maybe they're a pair of nerdy sculls trying too hard to be cool.

They're made of sterling silver, goldtone, and cubic zirconia, and I can't even begin to guess what kind of suit or event these would belong best at. $250

Hlaska Ties Have a Secret Theme

Make a quiet statement of individuality with these men's ties from Hlaska. At first glance they appear to be fairly standard patterns and stripes, but look closer and you'll see a definite scientific influence, especially to do with the stars and solar system. Available in light to dark colors, you can be wearing stripes that double as strings of dna helixes or binary code, or even the rings of Saturn.

We'll leave it up to you whether you want to enjoy your somewhat geeky (said with all the love in the world) fashion statement in relative silence, or go pointing out the details to everyone in the office. $125

The Classicist: A Savile Row Makeover

Filed under: Apparel, Men's Style, The Classicist

Welcome to The Classicist, our new column devoted to timeless style, enduring elegance, and true, built-to-last luxury as opposed to mere extravagance....

Savile Row stalwart Anderson & Sheppard, which recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, is steeped in tradition, to say the least. Yet while other old-fashioned bastions of upper-class masculine British taste have been sold off or hideously modernized, A&S has managed to adapt and survive -- thanks to a strong-willed woman.

Anda Rowland, daughter of the firm's longtime owner, natty British millionaire Roland "Tiny" Rowland, who took over the business a few years ago, has set about bringing it into the 21st century without sacrificing one whit in the way of elegance.

The firm not only outfitted the great Fred Astaire - perhaps the best dressed man the modern world has ever known - but also Rudolph Valentino, Charlie Chaplin, authors Evelyn Waugh and Somerset Maugham, Gary Cooper, Noel Coward, Sir Laurence Olivier, Douglas Fairbanks Sr. and Duke Ellington.

Cody Bradon Cufflinks

Sometimes I worry that French cuffs are going to become an artifact of a more graceful age, therefore it's exciting to know that today's young designers still have an interest in cufflinks. Cody Bradon is a new brand started by a couple of friends attending Parsons School of Design in New York, NY. Their mission is to reinvent the classic man with a modern twist. Their first collection of silver cufflinks is done is a style they call Streamline Moderne, a nod to Art Deco styles of the past. Each cufflink style is named after an example of Streamline Moderne design from the past and features gemstones set in sterling silver. The cufflinks sell for $25 to $35.

Justin Timberlake To Have A Fragrance Line

Filed under: Celebrity Shopping, Cosmetics and Fragrance

I'm amazed that it hadn't happened before this but Justin Timberlake is finally going to have his own fragrance. Parfums Givenchy has announced that Timberlake will be fronting a men's fragrance for the company. Timberlake joins actress Liv Tyler as a celebrity pitchperson for Givenchy. Timberlake's new scent will debut in fall 2008. Timberlake, who is working on his acting career, also has a fashion line, William Rast, as well as a restaurant.

While the celebrity men's fragrance market is nowhere near as packed as the female celebrity fragrance market, more and more stars are lending their names and faces to scent lines either as the celebrity spokesperson for a perfume or for their own line. Our gallery below list just a few of the sweet-smelling men in the fragrance arena.

The Perfect Luxury Bathroom for Men?

Porsche designed what they called the perfect man's kitchen, and now Hoesch has done what just might be the same thing but in the bathroom. Start with clean lines and the simplest of color schemes and combine it with cutting edge technology and you've pretty much made any guy (and many women for that matter) happy. It has a Mirror TV Cabinet, a Duo bathtub roomy enough for two, a walk-in shower with a drying area and special grid floor that eliminates puddles, and both a shallow and a deep sink. All displayed and surrounded by classic white porcelain and your choice of walnut or macassar. What do you think guys, yay or nay?

Manolo for Men

Manolo Blahnik is much beloved of the ladies but he hasn't done much for the men lately. That's about to change. Vogue UK reports that Manolo has created a six-piece collection for men. The designs that Vogue shows are not for the average man. Sure, the red Oxford isn't too far out there but it would take a special man to pull off the leopard-print sandal or the lace-up peep-toe slingback. The collection should be out in stores in February.

Think Manolo is the only one with daring designs for men's shoes? Check out more intriguing men's shoe options in the gallery below.

Pav Diamond Dog Tag

Sometimes guys want a little bling too, you know? But it's hard to find that right balance of flash and masculinity, and although I'm not claiming this Pavé Diamond Dog Tag by David Yurman does the trick (it's all about personal preference and I'm not even a guy) the mix of pave diamonds and dog tag style seems to at least be in the right ballpark. It has a total of 1.15 carats total with a sterling silver logo, cable trim, "925" inlay, and a sterling silver chain pulling the whole thing together. Available at Neiman Marcus for $1,950.

The Man's Kitchen

Manly men who love to cook: here comes the kitchen of your dreams. That's the idea anyway behind Porsche Design Group and Poggenpohl's new "man's kitchen" (there's no official name yet). It's been created and crafted with the male cook in mind, which apparently means modern and sleek monochromatic stying complete with details like no-handle cabinets, high-tech audiovisual system and aluminum-finished everything. It will be available starting sometime next year.

I think it looks sleek and manly, but what do I know? Guys: did they get it right?
