Mark Memorial Day in a Different Way at the Rubin Art Museum

Memorial Day is the only national US holiday that focuses squarely on death -- remembering fallen members of the armed forces, to be exact, and many people will visit cemeteries and memorials this weekend in their honor.

If that's not quite your brand of vodka, might I suggest that you mark the holiday by visiting the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City? The museum is running a provocative exhibit called Remember that You Will Die, which upon reflection seems just right for such a holiday.

The RMA focuses on Himalayan art, and it's one of the city's newer museums -- it opened its doors in Chelsea in 2004. Remember that You Will Die exhibits 84 works of art and artifacts on the theme of death and the afterlife, gathering works from the East (Tibet) and the West, medieval and early Renaissance Europe along with one contemporary work, a video by American artist Bill Viola. I visited yesterday found a Tibetan apron made of bone and an English physician's walking stick topped with a skull pommel from circa 18th century to be particularly compelling.

Why Paris Hilton and Mariah Carey Are Spending Memorial Day Weekend In Turkey

A bunch of celebrities including Mariah Carey, Seal, Richard Gere, Sharon Stone and Paris Hilton wound up at the Mardan Palace Hotel in Antalya, Turkey this Memorial Day weekend. The NY Post reports that Carey picked up a $1.5 million paycheck for performing at the opening of the hotel which bills itself as "Europe's most expensive hotel." The Post says Tom Jones also got the same fee. Other celebs reportedly earned more modest sums simply for showing up. Pics from the event in the gallery below.

Roberto Cavalli Freedom Bag, Handbag of the Day

The Freedom Bag by Roberto Cavalli has an appropriate name for the Handbag of the Day on Memorial Day. The bag is a medium, nylon fabric shoulder bag that features a textured leather strap and borders. The red fabric is a bold, bright red and actually has the designer's logo woven throughout the material, though an unusual weave gives the whole piece a rippling effect and conceals the name in places. From a distance, this design merely gives the bag a textured appearance. A metal accent, which is also engraved with the designer's logo, is used to embellish the basic bag. The Freedom bag zips closed and has one inside pocket. Price:  $208.
