Stunning '59 Ferrari 250 Tour TdF Race Winner for Auction in Monterey

Some classic automobiles are sought after for their beauty. Others for their pedigree. This particular example is making headlines for both.

Stunning as it is in pristine condition with its original red and orange livery with original racing number, that only conveys the racing heritage behind this particular 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Tour de France. In the same year as its construction, chassis number 1321 took first in its class and third place overall at Le Mans and won the 1000km Nurburgring race as well.

Since then it's only changed hands a handful of times, and will now be auctioned off by Mecum in Monterey, California, during the Pebble Beach concours weekend, following its first public showing in nearly twenty years.

Legendary Designer's Unique '63 Corvette Stingray Up for Auction

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Auctions

Automobile auctions happen all the time. Sometimes they've got something interesting, sometimes they're all rather ordinary. But once in a while a sportscar rolls across the auction block oozing with heritage in equal measure to motor oil. This is one of those cars. It once belonged to Harley Earl, widely renowned and fondly remembered as the dean of automobile design. General Motors made this 1963 Corvette Stingray convertible specially for Earl, packed with all manner of special features, from the special paint scheme to the unique side-mounted exhaust. He drove the car for two years, even drove it as the Grand Marshal of the Daytona 500, before selling it and the car disappeared into obscurity. Four and a half decades later, the unique Corvette has been fully restored to original condition, and is being auctioned off to the highest bidder at the Mecum Bloomington Gold Corvette Auction in St. Charles, Illinois, later this month, where it is likely to fetch the highest price ever paid for a Corvette.

Historic Shelby Daytona Expected to Fetch Over $10 million at Indy Auction

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Auctions, The Classicist

No matter what state the economy is in, ten million is an awful lot to spend on one single car, so it had better be one exceptional piece of machinery to be fetching that kind of price. Fortunately the 1965 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe is just such a machine: the very first American car to defeat Ferrari in a world championship racing series in Europe.

The story goes back to the summer of 1963 when, at the eleventh hour, Enzo Ferrari called off a deal that would have given Ford 50% ownership in his company. Dejected and vindictive, Ford set out to beat Ferrari at its own game, and this is the car that made it happen. Based on the iconic Shelby Cobra roadster, the Daytona coupe featured a specially-designed aerodynamic body to give it an extra 25 mph of top speed. With a big-block, racing-tuned Ford 427 V8 under the hood, the Daytona was fast enough to beat the Italians, clinching the FIA GT title in France in 1965, and bringing the glory home to America. This beautifully restored piece of automotive history is anticipated to shatter existing records with an expected price of $10-15 million when it goes under the hammer at Indianapolis on May 15 at the Dana Macum Original Spring Classic, so stay tuned to see the Shelby Daytona make history yet again.
