Matthew McConaughey's Sweetheart Launches Muxo Handbag Line

Normally I would say that any girlfriend of a major star like Matthew McConaughey who launches a handbag line is only looking for free publicity and easy money (not that there's anything wrong with that), but in the case of Camila Alves things seem to be a lot different. Not only did she and her mother design the bags, but every single one is handmade by herself and her mother. That's makes them pretty special.

Described as "elegance meets tribal exotic" there's a lot to love in the Muxo line, including slouchy shapes, plenty of leather fringe, and even some very macho looking men's bags. My favorite of the bunch is this clutch called simply "Broadway" for $450. (Didn't she just have a baby? She's been busy.).

The Need for Speed: A Look at Motorcycle-Loving Celebrities

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Celebrity Shopping

Celebrities and their motorcycles have had a long and enduring affair. From before the iconic movie, Easy Rider, celebrities, mostly men, have taken to the open road. Why the link between the famous and the fast? Certainly wherever there is money there are toys to spend it on but could there be more to the lure. I asked Mike Werner, the man behind Bikes in the Fast Lane Motorcycle News for his take on the link between the two. Mike has an interesting theory. He says there are three basic types of celebrity motorcycle riders: the ones who are riding to look cool and may have many bikes but not so many miles on the bikes, the "real biker" celebs who were into biking before they became famous and now have the money and time to indulge their passion and the ones who started off riding as a fashion statement but then found themselves getting really into motorcycles. Mike Werner cited Robert M. Pirsig, the author of the much-loved book Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance who said that the allure of riding a motorcycle is that you are one with the road in a way you cannot be in a car, you are exposed to the weather and the air and the smell of the road.

Motorcycles also offer an escape from the world of celebrity, the chance to feel free and slip away from the world. It's no surprise that many of the celebrity motorcycle riders are also pilots. Each offers both the exhilaration of potential danger as well as the feeling of mastery, to be both in control and yet aware that you are not completely in control, that the environment you are in also controls you. I suspect that being famous can be similar in some ways, a odd juxtaposition of power and powerlessness.

Paris Hilton, to my knowledge, has never been seen, outside of the red carpet of course, on the $250,000 custom motorcycle she is shown riding in the picture above. The gallery below includes just some of the celebrities famous for loving and riding (at least to premieres) their motorcycles.

Matthew McConaughey's Malibu Mess

For a little while, frequently bare-chested romantic comedy star Matthew McConaughey has been living the real estate-less life in California. McConaughey sold off his three-lot Hollywood Hills compound toward the end of 2006 and then was spending most of his time in a couple of Airstream trailers in Malibu. He also still owns a 1.600-acre ranch in Texas. But last fall, McConaughey, who recently announced that his model girlfriend Camilla Alves is pregnant with their child, purchased a $10 million property in Malibu. The property is a little over an acre and includes a four-bedroom home that was built in 1949. When the sale was announced in November, Big Time Listings mentioned that the 3,550-square-foot home has had some celebrity owners in the past such as Richard Page, the lead singer of the 1980s band Mr. Mister (which had the popular songs 'Broken Wings' and 'Kyrie') who sold the house in 1996 to its most recent owner for $1,260,000. As TMZ shows in a video on their website construction has begun on the home, expanding the home which is located on a deep lot just a few houses away from the ocean.

Matthew McConaughey is far from the first celebrity to spend a lot of money on a home that needs a lot of work or may even be a tear down. Our gallery below includes a few more examples of recently multi-million dollar purchases bought for the land more than the home.

Matthew McConaughey's Corvette Sold

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Auctions

We mentioned that actor Matthew McConaughey had put his 1971 Corvette Stingray up for auction on eBay, with the proceeds from the sale to benefit Oprah Winfrey's Angel Network charity and the survivors of Hurricanes Rita and Katrina. The car has sold for a total of $61,600. As an added bonus, per the FAQs answered by McConaughey about the car, the owner will get to know the names of all the other celebrities who have ridden in the car.

Clearly, that was one of the biggest selling points (just kidding - hopefully).

Actor Matthew McConaughey becomes the latest to do a little something for charity. He's selling his blue 1971 Chevy Stingray convertible on eBay to benefit Oprah's Angel Network's Hurricanes Katrina and Rita recovery. On the auction website, McConaughey says that he picked up the car that he calls Mako in 1998 at a car show. He calls it the " quintessential, bare bones, badass American sports car" and says he has driven it all over Texas (where the car is now). No bids thus far...
