Maserati GranTurismo Convertible Sold Out

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Luxury Shopping

This is the Maserati GranTurismo Convertible. It's arguably the most desirable four-seat convertible on the market, and the first one to come out of Italy in decades. It's been engineered with input from Ferrari, has room to carry you and three of your friends for one of the best wind-in-your-hair experiences available. You may want one, but you can't have one. Because they're sold out.

The model – also known as the GranCabrio overseas – has helped Maserati rebound to pre-recession sales levels in the United States, while the GranTurismo coupe and Quattroporte sedan have failed to recovered. The new convertible, with its myriad customization choices, has proven so popular that there's now a waiting list to get your hands on one. That's what we'd call a success.

Positioning itself as much as a style icon as an automaker, Maserati has teamed up with a selection of fashion houses for a new collection of yachting and golf ware including apparel, shoes, bags and accessories.

The collection includes bespoke items made for the trident marque by the likes of Vuarnet, Suprem and Pellemoda. The items will be displayed, along with the GranTurismo Convertible, at Stand 2 of the Pitti Uomo fashion show at the Cortile Polveriera in Fortezza de Basso, Florence, but you can have an advance look in the image gallery below.

If you were driving a high-strung performance machine like a Ferrari F1 car for a living, what would you want to drive in your down-time? Probably something like a Maserati GranCabrio, known Stateside as the GranTurismo Convertible. Which is precisely what Fernando Alonso has picked out for himself.

The two-time world champion F1 driver recently moved to Ferrari, and is off to a great start already. When he was at Renault, he drove a Megane RS. When at McLaren-Mercedes, an Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. Now that he's at Ferrari, he chose to go with something a little more relaxed, and called up his employer's sister company Maserati to make it happen. His selection is decked out in dark gray with a two-tone beige and bordeaux interior with matching bordeaux roof. Nice choice, Fernando!

Call your bank. Call your parents. Call in that fiver you lent to that guy at the bar. Because Maserati has just announced American pricing for their new GranTurismo Convertible, and you're going to need every penny you can scrape together.

Before taxes and other charges, the manufacturer's suggested retail price for the convertible (known as the GranCabrio overseas) comes in at $135,800. Compared to the GranTurismo S coupe, with whose 4.7-liter V8 engine the convertible comes standard, the premium for open-air cruising will set you back $14,300.

2009 Frankfurt Auto Show: Maserati GranCabrio

If you're looking for an alternative to the likes of the Bentley Continental GTC, Aston Martin DB9 Volante or BMW 6 Series convertible, Maserati figures they've got just what you're looking for. Called the GranCabrio, it's based on the GranTurismo and was released a couple of weeks ago ahead of its debut last week at the Frankfurt auto show.

Exquisitely crafted with a Ferrari-designed 4.7-liter V8 engine, the GranCabrio offers the longest wheelbase on the market for a true four-seat cabin where many of its competitors are smaller 2+2s. It's been a long time in the making, and is finally here. Click on the thumbnail images below to browse our high-resolution photo gallery from the car's launch in Frankfurt.
