Cohiba Cognac from Martell

Few things go as well together as cigars and cognac. When lighting up your favorite stogie, you could open just any bottle of cognac, or you could uncork the latest from Martell.

Specially crafted for and in collaboration with the famed Cuban tobacco company, the Martell Cohiba cognac has been aged from 40 to 50 years before being bottled at 43% alcohol by volume. The special eaux-de-vie has a rich amber hue, and is made to compliment a fine Cohiba cigar.

Martell Cognac Launches Luxe Airport Brand Boutique

Pernod Ricard
has opened the first Martell Experience Boutique in partnership with liquor and tobacco retailer Sky Connection at Hong Kong International airport (HKIA) terminal one's arrivals area. The main attraction of the boutique is the Martell Discovery Table, where consumers see tasting notes for each Martell cognac and eaux-de-vie blend. Pernod made a commitment to the boutique at HKIA for three years, and is looking to roll it out to other airports.

This venture follows a successful run of a pop-up boutique of a different design at the Pavilion Kuala Lumpur last January and February.

Lord knows, airports are places for business travelers to kill time. And there is mounting interest in turning retail space into more experiential brand boutiques, rather than just kissing off all that time travelers have to the VIP clubs run by the airlines. Visitors can delve into the production methods of the cognac and history of the brand via videos. Passengers can take advantage of the brand's bottle engraving services dedicated to the L'Or de Jean Martell decanters and obtain assistance from Martell brand specialists.

Speaking at the grand opening, Sky Connection CEO Baker Salleh said: "What you see here today is actually the cooperation and culmination of a very successful and visionary investment in terms of duty free shops. As you can see across the way, there's a very standard duty free shop where we try to cater to the maximum number of passengers, but on this side you see the epitome of a luxury boutique.

Pricey Cognac Is A Big Seller In China

Cognac buyers are still buying the expensive bottles in China. Blloomberg reports that Chinese buyers have snapped up all the available bottles of Pernod Ricard SA's Martell L'Or cognac. As I mentioned back in April, this pricey potable sells for $3,600 per bottle. The cognac, which includes eaux-de-vie dating back to 1871, was introduced in China at the end of last year. L'Or was Martell's answer to ultra-premium products available from Hennessy and Remy Martin for similar prices. The immediate status factor of a rare and old liquor contained in a crystal bottle seems to be irresistible thus far for China's newly wealthy.

L'Or de Jean Martell, $3,600 A Bottle

There are few people willing to spend $3,600 on cognac right now but if there are more than 120 of them in the U.S. they may have to fight it out. That's how many bottles of the new L'Or de Jean Martell will be available in the States. The L'Or de Jean Martell is called the ultimate expression of the House of Martell and is made from aged eau-de-vie from Borderies, the smallest growing region in Cognac. The L'Or de Jean Martell is a blending of several hundred eau-de-vie, some aged over 100 years in the house's cellars. It has notes of fruited candy, sweet spices and gingerbread. The bottle is made of Cristal de Sevres embellished with gilded garlands.

Martell Chateau de Versailles Cognac

The latest version of Martell Cognac was recently launched with a party at the Palace of Versailles. Why there? Because their latest limited edition is the Château de Versailles Exclusive Edition. The limited-edition VSOP will be sold in a bottle with the Versailles Sun King motif and comes in a box that opens out into the shape of a golden flower. It will first be sold exclusively by travel retailer DFS Group in the new Singapore Changi Terminal 3, which opens in January 2008 for $99 Singapore dollars. The Moodie Report has a lovely slideshow of the Versailles launch.
