Former Ritz-Carlton Hotel Gets New Historic Name

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

In April I mentioned that Michigan was losing its only Ritz-Carlton hotel. The hotel known as the Ritz-Carlton Dearborn will now become The Henry as of June 3, and will be part of Marriott International's Autograph Collection of independent hotels. The Detroit Free Press reports that most of the hotel's empoyees will be keeping their jobs. The Henry joins eight other hotels in the new collection of upscale hotels with "distinctive personalities." The hotel takes its name from Henry Ford and is conveniently located near the Henry Ford museum. The new owners are planning a seamless transition.

Schrager and Marriott Plan Hotel Empire

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Boutique hotel god Ian Schrager, who most recently worked his magic on the absolutely delicious Gramercy Park Hotel has a big new partner, Marriott Hotels. The partnership will give Schrager the opportunity to bring his particular brand of chic to around 100 hotels located in cities throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia. The hotels will contain an average of 150 to 200 rooms. Schrager will do the concept, design, branding and food and beverage while Marriott will oversee the development process and operate the hotels. No specific details have been given on the project but there are some clues. Check out a Businessweek article from last year in which Schrager proclaimed that "it is over for design hotels" proclaiming the art hotel to be the new hotness. Also Hotel Chatter was kind enough to liveblog the dynamic duo's appearance on Morning Call.
