The Fashion Statement: For Sex or Abstinence?

Designers are in the midst of a heated argument at Milan fashion week-whether one should dress for sex or dress for abstinence in a global recession. Seems a fitting debate in a country where the famously womanizing Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and Pope Benedict XVI are its two most powerful leaders

On the celibate team sits Miuccia Prada, who practices restraint on a regular basis (well, by Italian standards). She further reigned in her collection (well, by Prada standards) to include charcoal knee-length walking shorts, Fifties-style swimwear and demure day dresses. The ever quirky Marni showed knee-length shorts and paired them with thick-strapped shoes with thick soles worn with beige ankle socks (I can hear my boyfriend's protests now). Roberto Cavalli went AWOL from his I'm-too-sexy position in the marketplace, putting out modest peasant dresses with hems stopping mid-calf.

Then again, sex sells. Versace stayed true to form. Sex, sex and more sex with Donatella's brand of cigarettes afterward, thank you. Slits cut up to there. Necklines cut down to there. Cut-outs revealing erogenous zones. Towering stilettos. Short, short, short. (Definitely more my boyfriend's speed, I'm guessing.)

Marni Pierced Wool Bag, Handbag of the Day

This bag is actually much bigger than it looks in this photo -- I thought it was a cute little handbag and it's actually a very generously sized tote! The Pierced Wool Bag by Marni is a cozy way to carry your essentials about town this fall and winter, and thanks to its simplicity and neutral color tones you won't have to worry about having it clash with whatever you're wearing that day. Blue-black wool meets with a silvertone hardware piercing at the top, brown leather handles, and a detachable shoulder strap. Snap closures, fully lined with interior pockets, $1,105.

Marni Alpaca Tote, Handbag of the Day

This fluffy, soft Alpaca Tote by Marni is the 'comfort food' of the handbag world. I only wish it weren't real fur (these days they can work wonders with the faux stuff) but if you're going to go there this is a least a gorgeous, classy way to do it. It's a lovely shade of white-gray called "frost" and has a silvertone frame and a sliding leather handle, internal pockets, and a twill lining. What a luxe, unique way to dress up your winter wardrobe. $2,440

Marni Suede Frame Bag, Handbag of the Day

This cute little frame bag by Marni has what I can only describe as an eclectic mix of materials, colors, and textures. Described as "modern-vintage" this bag has lots of personality but can still be paired with almost anything thanks to its neutral color scheme. Charcoal suede, silvertone hardware, a turquoise clasp, and a contrasting brown leather handle on a detachable chain combine for this unique look, and it's also fully lined with an interior zip pocket and a couple pouch pockets for easy stashing of all your party essentials. $1,480

Marni Balloon Handbag, Handbag of the Day

marni balloon The oversized bag trend is one that many love and I'm sure many people hate. I love the trend because I just love big bags. As a working mom who is juggling all sorts of responsibilities and being prepared for the infinite amounts of "just-in-case" moments, a large bag is great solution. Of course a canvas tote or a backpack could be just as useful and more practical, but being a working mom who is obsessed with handbags, I look for bags that satisfy all my needs. The Marni Balloon Bag does just that. Made from goatskin, it has an extra roomy interior with two interior pockets, a lengthy shoulder strap and double handles. The deep and rich brick orange color makes the Balloon bag perfect for any season. Also available in cypress (dark green). Measurements: 19.5 x 6.6 x 13.7 inches. Price: $1560.

Marni Leather Shoulder Bag, Handbag of the Day

I like this shoulder bag because it's got a lot of style but isn't loud or impractical, plus it looks comfy and easy to use and to take care of (I love anything that looks low maintenance). The Marni Leather Shoulder Bag is made of soft green suede, bright silver hardware, and sides accented with a pretty shade of purplish-pink. It closes at the top with an oversized bobble push lock that shows through the flap via a cut-out, and the flap stays down with a clasp. $1,775

Daphne Guinness Auction, Fashion For A Good Cause

Daphne Guiness, socialite and couture collector, has decided to jump on the bandwagon and perform her own spring cleaning in her closet -- except she is auctioning her unused and unwanted items to support the Womankind charity which benefits women in developing countries. The auction of such pieces from Chanel, Versace and Alexander McQueen happens today at 2 pm with Kerry Taylor Auction House in London. For those of us who can't make the lightning-speed trip over the pond, you can also bid via eBay. A typical lot of shoes may include four or more styles from Jimmy Choo, Yves Saint Laurent or Prada and will range from $80 to $400. There are also Marni coats and a Lanvin shredded ribbon dress. Although you have to be a size 37 shoe (that's in UK sizing) you don't have to fit into the gorgeous handbags, hats or accessories.

Marni Brings Art to Your Handbag

If you like abstract art on your walls and a unique bag on your shoulder the Marni Slouchy Fabric Tote will mix those entities up and come out on top. Reminiscent of fresh green leaves on a budding tree in spring, this handbag also has leather handles and drawstring closure at the top. For $507 you can carry your tote around town with pride over it's artistic look and fantastic feel, carrying just about everything you need for the day inside.

Marni Feathered Evening Bag, Handbag of the Day

Feathers may be all over the runways this fall, but too much of a good thing can make one a little birdish. I think this bag strikes a nice balance with a wispy row of pink and grey rooster feathers against a soft grey satin.
A panel of dark grey latex is accented with a Swarovski crystal adorned latch and the wide leather and nylon strap is fortunately detachable. Inside, the bag is lined in silk raso and features one leather trimmed pocket. The clutch measures 10.5 x 10.5 x 1.6 x 5.5 and sells for $1100.

Leggings for Men?

After Balenciaga came out with their $100,000 metallic leggings, there was nowhere for the women's legging industry to go without changing materials and moving away from the easy, form fitting standard that makes leggings what they are. So, designers have moved their leggings onto men. Marni's brand new men's collection for this coming fall heavily features men's leggings. They're made of microfiber cotton and wool, have bottom stirrup straps and come in a variety of colors. Marni is describing them as "sophisticated," but it seems unlikely that too many men are going to dive right in to this extremely form fitting type of clothing for casual or evening wear.

Marni Balloon Bag, Handbag of the Day

Even those metallic kids' balloons don't look as shiny as the Marni Balloon Bag, reported to be one of the hottest new bags of the season. Fortunately, the bag is made of red patent leather, not anything actually metallic. It has small top handles in smooth tan leather, as well as leather reinforcements at the bottom corners of the bag. An adjustable shoulder strap makes the oversized tote easy to tuck under your arm. If you prefer a more understated look, even though the lipstick red is very appealing, the bag is also available in black, grey, cream, and saffron. Price: $1,620, at Marni boutiques.

Marni Leather Frame Bag, Handbag of the Day

Marni's Leather Frame Bag is a nice complement to a business suit or other professional outfit. The bag, which is made of shiny tobacco-colored leather, has a slightly 80s look to it due to some of the more decorative links in the chain. Despite the fact that it has a chain attached to the top handle, it is intended to be purely decorative and the bag should be carried with the small top handle. Price: $1,605 (on sale for $963).
