David Lynch Directs For Dior

Although he's done it plenty of times before, it always seems to me like David Lynch is an odd choice for a director of commercials. Perhaps that's because his greatest skill as a director lies in create a certain unease in the viewer. That talent is wholly on display in Lady Blue Shanghai, his film for Lady Dior. The film stars Dior-clad Marion Cotillard and the oddly glowing Dior Lady Blue handbag set against the exotic and noir backdrop of a Shanghai hotel. The 15-minute film is beautiful (thanks in part to art direction from John Galliano), sad and undeniably quirky, almost to the point of distraction. Lynch embellishes his simple plot with camera work that spins through neon whirls to suddenly focus on the unadorned beauty of his wide-eyed leading lady. Does it lead the viewer to want to purchase the bag? See for yourself at LadyDior.com

Heels often turn heads but not like this. French actress Marion Cotillard caused a stir with her unique Dior shoes at the Bike in Style challenge in New York City this week. The strappy shoes were designed by John Galliano and the heel is in the shape of a fertility goddess. Cotillard paired the shoes with an understated suit. The shoes first hit the runway last fall as part of John Galliano's Dior spring/summer 2009 'Tribal Chic' collection.

French actress Marion Cotillard stars in a new short film from Dior. The Lady Noir short was directed by Oliver Dahan who also directed Cotillard in her Oscar-winning turn in La Vie en Rose. In the short film, Cotillard is involved in a film noir plot that involves a chase across Paris (in six-inch Dior shoes no less) and also showcases the Lady Noire bag designed by John Galliano. The film is part of four shorts which will tell the story of "One lady, four cities, one iconic Lady Dior bag." A short trailer is above, the entire first film is here.
