Marcel Wanders is at it again with a playful creation with Droog Design. The seat of this swing can be filled with soil and seeds planted inside. It is designed so that vines will grow up the ropes. The swing is made of polyethylene with a nylon rope and comes in white, black or green. The Yoo design team which has created residential projects around the world with designers Phiippe Starck and Jade Jagger, has hooked up with another internationally famous designer, Dutch designer Marcel Wanders (he's the one in the center in the picture at right). Wanders is not as well known as Starck (at least here in the U.S.) but his home designs share a similar mixture of wit and utility. Wanders has designed for a variety of brands including Bizazza, Droog Design, Capellini and Moooi, and his work has appeared in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This isn't his first spin as an interior designer, Wanders has also designed the interiors of Mondrian's South Beach, Miami & Las Vegas hotels and the interior of restaurants 'Blits' in Rotterdam and 'Thor' at the Hotel on Rivington in New York. The latest design from superdesigner Marcel Wanders is the Flos Skygarden is a new pendant light series. The Skygarden was inspired by an antique decorated plaster ceiling in one of Wanders's previous homes. The exterior of the lamp is done in sleek glossy black, white, rust or gold. The interior shows intricate old-fashioned detail including leaves flowers and branches. The light bulb cover also has a laser cut pattern featuring one of Marcel Wanders design patterns. Made by Moooi and designed by Marcel Wanders, the V.I.P. Chair really puts users up on a pedestal. It features flared legs (the "chair with flares") that offer maximum support to the user, while at the same time allowing for some flexibility that a completely solid base would not. It has a steel frame with a soft, upholstered finish and is shaped to offer the maximum comfort to anyone who sits in it. The designer seems to suggest that the chair could work equally well in a conference room at the office or in a home dining room. It measures 31"H x 24 ½"W x 21"D. Price: $1,680.
Marcel Wanders is an amazing Dutch designer that has enjoyed quite a bit of publicity this year due to the popularity of his knitted/crocheted creations for the home. This past weekend, while in Miami, Beyonce and Jay-Z took a tour of DesignMiami to pick out furniture when one of Wander's newest creations caught their eye. They took home one of his knitted chairs for about $40,000. The chair is beautiful, made of white cotton and coated with epoxy resin, but that price is quite a lot for a chair - especially when, due to the unusual design, half of it isn't really there.
The Ballerina chair created by eclectic designer Marcel Wanders for Baleri Italia is a must-have for a very girly house. The tubular steel bistro-style chair has a heart-shaped back and a cushion draped in a modest cover available in a variety of colors. Wanders loves quirky design and I think he meant this one in an ironic sense but the overall effect is a bit toothnumbingly cute. It sells for $467.
