The GlenDronach 2010 Batch 2 Single Cask Bottlings

Scotch whisky enthusiasts enamored of sherry wood finishes should be well acquainted with The GlenDronach Distillery. Founded in 1826 and recently revived, GlenDronach produces a range of "richly sherried" single malts at 12, 15 and 18 years old. But in addition to the core range, the distillery also offers a selection of limited-edition expressions, the latest of which has just hit the market.

The seven special malts in this Batch 2 release range from 17 to 39 years old, aged in Oloroso sherry butts and Pedro Ximinez sherry puncheons, bottled at between 48.8 and 60.5 percent, the concentration inversely correlated to the age. In addition to local markets, they're being exported to more than 20 overseas markets, so check with your local stockist to get your hands on one.

Kilchoman Spring 2010 Release

Starting a scotch whisky distillery is a difficult and painstaking undertaking, if for no other reason than because you have to wait years before you can even begin selling your product, let alone seeing a return on your investment. Take, for example, Kilchoman. Founded in 2005, the upstart distillery is still years away from releasing the 12-year-old malts that many consumers take as the starting point. But banking on newfound enthusiasm for younger whiskies (and for a new Islay malt especially), Scotland's westernmost distillery has already begun releasing limited quantities bottled at 3 years old – the minimum age for a scotch whisky according to established industry standards.

These releases have already begun drumming up excitement for the new single malt, and have been selling out quickly. The Spring 2010 release is the latest, and among other retailers, the UK's Master of Malt has it on offer at £49.95 for a 70-centiliter bottle at 46% alcohol by volume. But if buying a bottle without tasting it leaves you hesitant, Master of Malt also offers 3cl sample bottles.

Only 200 bottles will be offered at £50 apiece, each individually numbered and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by head distiller Jeremy Stephens. Highland Harvest Organic Grain Whisky

We've seen organic rum, vodka, gin and now I've learned there is also an organic whisky. Highland Harvest Organic Grain Whisky is a blend of three grain whiskies (highland, island and Speyside)  along with a highland malt which have been matured together in Scotland for four years. The whisky has a light taste with notes of pine and fruit. According to an article in the Scotsman that came out last year the process of making organic whisky is different because the organic producers use natural yeast instead of cultivated yeast. This results in a whisky that is sweeter and less harsh. It's probably not going to replaced your aged single malt anytime soon but whisky may be the spirit in which the use of organic grains results in the largest taste difference.  It sells for £14.99.

Not your every day blended whisky from Compass Box

After visiting dozens of distilleries and refining his taste, John Glaser sat down in his home and began mixing whisky. Before he knew it, he decided to begin marketing his blends by buying special casks from Scottish distilleries and selling them under the brand name of Compass Box Crafted Whiskies. Picking some of the best aged grains, he has created whisky with outstanding profiles.  The Compass Box line includes blended Scotch in addition to various vatted malts. There are also limited edition whiskies such as Orangerie, the once a year orange and spice-infused whisky we mentioned back when it was available in December. Try The Peat Monster. It is a vatted malt made with Caol Ila and Ardmore malts, 92 proof at $45.

Live Aid Whisky

Two special decanters that contain Speyside malts are being sold to make money for Make Poverty History. The whisky was created for the 20th anniversary of Live Aid and all the whisky used is at least 20 years old. The malt whisky was collected from a variety of distilleries by a team from Whisky magazine during a charity walk for Make Poverty History. The whisky was blended by Richard Paterson of Whyte & Mackay and there was only enough whisky for two bottles. The two decanters were designed by Glencairn Glass and one will be auctioned off at the Whisky Magazine whisky show in New York in April. Whisky Magazine is accepting bids for the other decanter.
