Glenfyne Single-Malt Expected to Fetch £10,000

A rare malt whisky from a distillery that closed more than 70 years ago is expected to fetch up to £10,000.

The Glamis ten-year-old 20th century single malt was distilled and bottled by The Glenfyne Distillery Co. Ltd., on Ardrishaig in Scotland.

The distillery operated for more than 100 years before it closed in 1937, and the bottle was imported into the USA by Greig, Lawrence and Hoyt Limited, of New York. In addition to the Glenfyne Distillery crest embossed on top, it also bears an American tax strip and carries the words "Federal Law Forbids Sale or Re-use of This Bottle" on the shoulder.

It is the star item in Bonhams' whisky sale in Edinburgh on November 17.

The Director's Cut Delivers A Whisky A Month

Wine lovers have their pick of bottle of the month clubs but for whisky lovers, there is The Director's Cut for members of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society in England. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is a membership group which bottles only single casks from a range of 125 malt whisky distilleries. Each month, Society's Directors, Paul Miles, Kai Ivalo and Anne Griffiths, get together to personally hand-pick a bottle from a selection of the very best single cask, single malt whisky. The Society bottles around 20 different single casks each month so this alleviates the decision process and can expose subscribers to whiskies they have never even heard of or thought of trying. Members tell the Society the amount they wish to spend per bottle, either £50 or £75 and after 12 months members will receive an extra bottle as a thank you.

Oil Shortage Messes Up Whisky Festival

Oil shortages have brought the stills at the Bruichladdich distillery on the island of Islay to a halt. The Islay Whisky Festival is underway this week but no one is able to distill without the oil. Tankers have not been able to dock at the island due to low tides and a high degree of silting despite the fact that the area has been dredged. Islay is famed for its whisky and is home to eight distilleries including Bowmore, Ardbeg and Laphroaig.

The Coaster, New Zealand's Single Malt Whisky

Once upon a time well-regarded wine was mainly made in Europe, now it spans the globe. Will the same thing be true of whisky? The Malt Whisky Year Book recently gave accolades to The Coaster, a whisky that comes from TImaru, New Zealand. The Southern Distilling Company is the world's most southern distillery and they produce Hokonui Moonshine as well as single malt and blended whiskies. For the Coaster, a driftwood /seaweed fuel is used to scorch the malted barley and char the oak. It has a golden amber color and a smoky, caramel flavor.
