Paradise Cove and Point Dume Club are mobile home communities. Albeit, they're mobile homes with a view -- one of the most expensive views in the country: of Malibu beaches, crashing waves and sun-drenched skies. These double wides will also run you about $2 million, though you can still find residence in one of the two parks for closer to $300,000 for a one-bed, one-bath, no view.
Then again, most trailer parks don't come with private beaches, tennis courts, clubhouse and an on-site spa.
Last time I mentioned the Villa Malibu complex it was to discuss Brody Jenner's move there in 2007. Now the complex which is located near the Pacific Coast Highway between Zuma Beach and Point Dume in Malibu, California, has started renting out units for vacation packages during November and December. Thanksgiving packages start at $10,700 and Holiday packages start at $11,300, per package for two-and-three bedroom suites. The packages include a one month lease, fully catered dinner for five to eight people, a private tour of Malibu wineries with a picnic lunch, horseback riding lessons and access to Villa Malibu's full-service amenities and onsite private staff which consists of a concierge, chauffeur and a beach porter. There is also a pool with private cabanas, an outdoor barbeque and dining garden, tennis courts, basketball court, fitness center, Pars course and a doggy park. While Malibu can be a bit cool in winter, like many beach towns, it is a lot calmer and easier to enjoy out of season.
For today's estate of the day we are back in Malibu, California where real estate prices continue to rise. The LA Times Hot Property column alerted me to the Las Flores Beach property of cinematographer Newton T. "Tom" Sigel who has worked on films like Three Kings and The Usual Suspects. Sigel's got a prime spot right on the beach and the modern home has glass windows showcasing the view and leading out onto the wide deck.
But this four-bedroom home could really use the help of a stager. The crinkled leather couches, haphazard window treatments and rumpled beds don't help sell the luxury of the home. The ersatz home theater is more depressing than inviting. Also, as much as I love concrete as a modern building material it's almost too much here. It is listed at $7.995 million. Too much? Anything is possible in Malibu but I'm not sure this one is worth nearly $8 million even with that blockbuster view. Experience more lush living in luxury homes and mansions or see the stars living large with celebrity homes galleries at AOL Real Estate.
Being the peak of summer it's also the peak of surfing season in most places, and for those who love the sport and just can't seem to get enough the answer might be to bring a surfboard into the house with you in the form of a coffee table. The "Endless Wave" is a table made of a real surfboard perched on top of a wave-shaped pedestal. It does, perhaps a little surprisingly, come across looking very classy and stylish. There are several color options available (or they can custom color one for you) and two different styles to choose from -- the Malibu and the Waikiki. $1800
I've seen plenty of big listings in Malibu but this one has everyone talking, William J. Chadwick, a managing director of the real estate investment banking and capital management firm Chadwick Saylor & Co., has put his Malibu home on the market for $65 million, a price that could be a record for the area. The 10,500-square-foot home also comes with 150 feet of beach front in the ultra-desirable Carbon Beach area, a 75-foot pool and spa, a wine cellar and six bedrooms. Other home features include a wall-sized aquarium, a master suite with hers and his bathrooms, a pub, a gym, a swoonworthy Art Deco home theater and a garage geared for the collector. For a home of this worth it's surprisingly tasteful. No Trump style excesses here, just a colorful and perfectly appointed beach house. Certainly for this type of money you could get more square footage elsewhere but it's a lovely home for those who want Carbon Beach cachet.
My favorite houses in Malibu are the beach houses, that whether modern or more traditional, reflect a certain casual style. But up from the beach you can find a few beautiful homes that seem more Holmby Hills than Malibu. This estate, Villa Versailles is yet another entry into the growing category of homes that have been built and then put on the market by those whose wallets and eyes might have been bigger than their stomach for living on such a grand scale. Curbed reported back in April that this 10-bedroom home was built in 1992 by a builder/developer for the love of his life who quickly decided that Malibu's relative remoteness didn't suit her. The couple reportedly moved out after a single weekend. And so for over 15 years the home has been on and off the market. It's been used in many photo and video shoots, rented out for various purposes and generally been gawked at for a long while. The home is on 5.33-acre estate acres including multiple pools, the gardens, the horse stables, and the caretakers' residence. The home has around 16,000 square feet of space which is significant because Malibu has passed an ordinance restricting the size of homes to 11,172 sq ft for the main house on a five+ acre lot minimum. You couldn't built one this big yourself there anymore, thank goodness.
The home may be called Villa Versailles but the style is Villa Versace with the black marble bathroom, columns topped with gold-painted capitals, and plenty of white and marble everywhere. A house that is not lived in is like a car not driven, it develops a certain staleness. It could benefit from a good stager to warm it up a bit. The home is listed at $23.75 million which is a fair amount for a home that is not beachfront in the area.
We've seen some huge estates sell in Malibu but how much would you pay for just the land? A large chunk of Malibu land has gone on sale for an astronomical price. This 1,280 acres of land has ocean views and beach frontage along Pacific Coast Highway and is broken into 29 parcels. The listing says "they don't don't make land like this anymore." Certainly not this close to Los Angeles they don't. I'm just hoping someone doesn't clutter up this spot with too many houses, it's one of my favorite unspoiled spots along PCH. It is listed at $130 million.
For a little while, frequently bare-chested romantic comedy star Matthew McConaughey has been living the real estate-less life in California. McConaughey sold off his three-lot Hollywood Hills compound toward the end of 2006 and then was spending most of his time in a couple of Airstream trailers in Malibu. He also still owns a 1.600-acre ranch in Texas. But last fall, McConaughey, who recently announced that his model girlfriend Camilla Alves is pregnant with their child, purchased a $10 million property in Malibu. The property is a little over an acre and includes a four-bedroom home that was built in 1949. When the sale was announced in November, Big Time Listings mentioned that the 3,550-square-foot home has had some celebrity owners in the past such as Richard Page, the lead singer of the 1980s band Mr. Mister (which had the popular songs 'Broken Wings' and 'Kyrie') who sold the house in 1996 to its most recent owner for $1,260,000. As TMZ shows in a video on their website construction has begun on the home, expanding the home which is located on a deep lot just a few houses away from the ocean.
Matthew McConaughey is far from the first celebrity to spend a lot of money on a home that needs a lot of work or may even be a tear down. Our gallery below includes a few more examples of recently multi-million dollar purchases bought for the land more than the home.
This one doesn't make me weak in the knees the way the Winston home did, but the six-bedroom Dan Residence also in Malibu is another contemporary treasure. The home was built in 1995 and was designed by architect Franklin Israel. It has a beautiful modern style with gorgeous exposed wood and plenty of glass to offer vistas out to the ocean views. The use of skylights is particularly winning. What's not to love? That stainless steel kitchen is just a bit too institutional for my taste. That can work in some homes that have a certain ruthless modernism, but this home is too warm and inviting for such a sterile kitchen. As you might expect a with a home like this, it's had its home decor magazine glamour shoots. With this home you also get a nice acre of land that includes lawns and a pool. You are a ways from the beach but it does come with membership to a beach club. It is listed at $5.995 million.
I have no idea who Stan Winston is but I think I'm in love. Celebrity Big Time Listings picked up on the Wall Street Journal's Private Properties piece (no link online yet) on Winston's Malibu beach house which is listed at $11.95 million. Turns out Winston is an esteemed makeup and special effects artist who has nabbed himself four Oscars in the course of his long career and he has created one stunning Malibu getaway. The home website calls it the Perfect Beach House. They aren't kidding although this home doesn't really have a beach house vibe. This home is drop-dead, smack-yourself-in-the-face gorgeous. The art in the place doesn't exactly give me the warm fuzzies but everything else is so spot on. I could even learn to love the rather institutional second bathroom. The home is cheek by jowl with other homes clustered on the beach and you don't get a pool, just a secluded outdoor hot tub which offers privacy but not much of a view.
A beach house with the sensibilities of a loft, this house on Malibu Road in Malibu, California is white, bright and boxy. The six-bedroom home offers over 5,600 square feet of space on the beach. The open floor plan includes a room-within-a-room inside the open area of the main floor. The home has six bedrooms and the front of and part of the sides of the house are nearly all glass to maximize the gorgeous views (this is not a house for walking around in the nude unless you are a gorgeous view yourself). All the superlatives apply here but the art lover in me cringes at the bright sunlight on all those paintings in the glass gallery. It is listed at $15.75 million. After the jump, bring your window cleaner.
Soon it will officially be summer, when homes in Malibu, California rent deep into the tens of thousands per month. Now there is another place to stay, the Malibu Beach Inn on prized Carbon Beach has had a glamorous revamp thanks to entertainment mogul David Geffen. The inn is home to 47 rooms and a fine dining restaurant open only to guests. The rooms have fireplaces, tile showers, flat screen televisions, wenge wood furnishings, stocked in-room wine racks and snacks from Dean and Deluca.
The Malibu Beach Inn is also home to a private club, the Carbon Beach Club at Malibu Beach Inn. The limited membership club gives access to the hotel's private beach, teak lounge chairs and the services of a wait staff who provide drinks and beach snacks. The beach concierge can also arrange surfing lessons and other classes. Annual memberships include a signature towel, hat, robe and t-shirt, a Carbon Beach Club charge account and exclusive monthly member-only events on the beach and Carbon Beach Club Dining Room, such as cocktail receptions, barbecues and California winemaker dinners.
Rates start in the $400 per night range and the hot spot is booked up until mid-August already.
Today's estate of the day was first reported by the Real Estalker. In just a few months, the cheeky and knowledgable Real Estalker has developed a blog worth obsessing over. Today's estate belongs to Martin Luther King Jr.'s son Dexter. Apparently Dexter is a rather smart houseflipper who bought this house for $2.055 million in 2005. The home has four bedrooms and absolutely beautiful ocean views. The four-bedroom home is very modern with glistering stainless steel in the kitchen and big wide windows to let in plenty of light. As Your Mama of the Real Estalker points out, it's most likely staged with rental furniture but whoever did it definitely earned their pay because it looks amazing. The major off note is the hot tub on the roof. It's delightfully positioned for maximum views but the rather chintzy tub strikes a note of discord against these sleek environs. It is listed at $3.495 million which should bring King a tidy profit if it sells for anything close to that. After the jump, table lamps on the kitchen counter?
The Los Angeles-based design group, Landry Design is one of those firms with the ability to create both modern angular glass palaces and ornate stone homes that mimic classics. This home obviously is the latter. Chateau Ortolan is a replica of a Loire Valley chateau located in Malibu just a few lots away from Pacific Coast Highway. You don't get the beautiful high-on-a-hill ocean views that Malibu is famous for but this home has its own charms. It is a four-bedroom home with beamed 30-foot ceilings, a separate master suite, a French country style kitchen and a large motor court entrance. The home also has a round heated saltwater pool. Pretty, but it appears to be located across the street from Malibu High School. It is listed at $6.995 million. After the jump, a very impressive staircase.
Would you live on a road that has the same name as your ex? It doesn't seem to be a problem for Brody Jenner, Bruce Jenner's son and US Weekly's hot Hollywood bachelor of the moment. Jenner has signed up to live at Villa Malibu, an apartment complex on Cavalleri Road. If that name sounds familiar it should, it's rather close to Kristin Cavallari, the Laguna Beach princess he once dated. Jenner is moving into a 2,100-square-foot two bedroom + den home. It has also been announced that model Amber Valletta and her husband, Olympic volleyball player Christian "Chip" McCaw, and son Auden will also be living at Villa Malibu. Amenities at the complex include a concierge, "lifestyle valet", a pool with cabanas, yoga and circuit training classes and a continental breakfast every Sunday. Sounds good but it might be a bit of a downgrade for Jenner who once had stepdaddy David Foster's palatial home at his disposal.
