Marisol Malibu Showcase Home For $17 million, Estate of The Day

Marisol Malibu is the largest major residential development project to rock Malibu in more than a decade. Tucked away near the end of Malibu's 27-mile stretch of coastline near the Ventura County line, the 80-acre development's main showcase home was just listed at $17 million. Also being sold are 16 additional ocean bluff home sites, starting at $4 million.

Malibu hasn't seen this level of pristine land since May Rindge locked up her gates and tried to block the railroad and county road from coming through her home. The Rindges bought the 13,300 acres of Rancho Malibu for $10 an acre in 1892 and while developer Richard Morris is certainly looking to fetch a little more, you can totally see what the Rindges saw way back when. It's just a breath-taking location, and as they say, nobody is manufacturing any more oceanfront land, are they?

Marisol Malibu features a 10,000-square-foot single-story main home. It has a 60-foot-wide great room with 14-foot tall ceilings, a fully equipped wet bar and two master bedroom suites both with oak ceilings and views of the surfers below. There are two other bedrooms with mountain views. The home has a state-of-the-art home theater, an open chef's kitchen, refrigerated wine cellar, gym and landscaped grounds with an infinity-edge lap pool and three patios. There is an outdoor dining pavilion and an ironwood deck on the 4,000 square foot bluff "beach." The home has a water wall of rock quarried from the site and set in a a fern and oak garden. The driveway is made of hand-hewn cobblestones of native rocks. There is parking for 10 cars. All the electronics are centrally controlled b a Creston smart system and 10 security cameras patrol the property.

Including the showcase property, Marisol has 13 oceanfront one-acre estate sites and three two-acre flat sites for estates to be built elevated above the oceanfront sites. There is also a 57-acre hillside retreat that overlooks the whole project and 10 miles of rugged coastline. The lots range from $4 million to $9 million.

Malibu Estate and Winery Gets $16 Million Price Cut

As real estate watchers visiting this site have probably noticed, I'm spending a little time digging through the archives looking at some of the results from this past year. While dawdling through the Malibu MLS, the words 'huge price reduction' caught my eye. It turns out that Rocky Oaks Estate, a property that first popped up on the market in late 2009 for $65 million has had $16 million carved off the list price.

For your $49 million you get a 37-acre parcel amidst the winery-rich area of Malibu on Kanan Dume Road. The estate has its own award-winning vineyard, a large Tuscan home, plus additional pads for a potential helicopter landing site, guest house, and guard gate. The acreage includes terraced vineyards and orchards of approximately 75 citrus trees and 50 fruit and nut trees. The hillside location also offers panoramic views of the ocean and distant vistas of city lights in all directions. Listing pictures show lush green hillsides and jaw-dropping views but no peeks at the interior of the newly constructed home. Will the price drop be enough to get this one a "Sold" sign? Given the wealth of Malibu property on the market I'm predicting another price cut before that happens.

An earlier version had the price cut at $14 million, thanks to Rod for pointing out that my late-night math had gone awry.

Malibu's La Villa Contenta Listed at $75 Million, Estate of the Day

We can't even look at this house without weeping at the thought it might be sold in pieces. Breaking up is hard to do and all that... Yet this Malibu eight-acre ocean-view estate is in the MLS twice: Once, as a buy-the-whole-enchilada for $75 million and then again as buy just the main house for $35 million.

Let's dispense quickly with the 12,000-square-foot main house. Yes, yes -- gorgeous and all that. There is a two-story hand-carved limestone entrance-way and the floor is hand-laid Pietra-dura mosaic made from antique reclaimed marbles.

The double living room is paneled in pale maple and a private covered loggia overlooks the lawn and sea. The dining room seats 24 and has an intricate hand-carved limestone ceiling. There's a Hermes marble fireplace in the library and 18Th century reclaimed floors in the kitchen. The lower level houses the English pine billiards room, a wine cellar, a 14-foot screen home theater and a full gym. The home has an elevator.

The upper level is home to the master suite, with a fireplace, large terrace overlooking the Pacific and his-and=-her bathrooms and closets. There are three additional bedroom suites on this level.

There is an outdoor infinity pool that is chlorine-free. and the pool area has a state-of-the-art outdoor kitchen. There is a championship quality north-south facing tennis court and an organic kitchen garden planted with a wide variety of fruit, vegetables, herbs and cutting plants.

And then there's the rest of the estate -- the parts that make this a $75 million estate.

There is a carved marble natatorium -- an indoor pool that is Romanesque in style with a frieze over the doorway. It's a regular underwater baroque fantasy inside made of a million seashells. The two changing rooms are paneled in rare onyx and decorated with seashells. Each has a large steam shower and every spa amenity you could want.

The lap pool is tiled in Murano glass and has swim jets to provide the necessary resistance. The glass ceilings are 20-feet tall. Just outside is a covered loggia with hand-painted whimsical sea creatures and yet another swimming pool.

The estate has one of the largest private greenhouses in California, designed to accommodate several thousand orchids and other delicate exotics. There is also a desert garden between the pool pavilion and greenhouse, connecting the two buildings via a walkway of travertine slabs that "float" on water.

Angelyne List Her Malibu Condo in Short Sale

In Los Angeles in the 1980s, Angelyne became famous for self promotion, putting up billboards and driving around in her pink Corvette. She's famous for high hair, low cleavage and a whole lot of pink. But times are hard and Angelyne is now forced to sell her pink-festooned condo in Malibu. This might be one of the most bedraggled listings we've had on the site. The listing says that it needs TLC and upgrades and they aren't kidding.

The Real Estalker reported that Angelyne bought the condo in 2000 for $530,000 but now owes more than that. The three-bedroom condo has over 1,800 square feet of space, most of it decorated in pink, feathers, and gilt mirrors. The listing says that the home has an ocean view and there is one ocean shot in the pictures. it is listed for $575,000.

Over the summer, Dr. Frank Ryan, a plastic surgeon to the stars who was in the news this year for the surgeries he did on The Hills star Heidi Montag, died in a Malibu car accident. In addition to his work as a surgeon, Dr. Ryan was also passionate about his nonprofit foundation, The Bony Pony Ranch, which was created to help underprivileged and at-risk youth excel beyond their current situations. The Dr. Frank Ryan Foundation provided a minimum of ten leadership day camps and leadership weekend camps per year. Last week Housing Watch reported that Dr. Ryan's Bony Pony Ranch was listed for sale.

Controversial Wells Fargo House in Malibu Colony Sold

The foreclosed-on house where a Wells Fargo vice president moved herself in and threw wild parties has been sold for $14,950,000, according to the MLS. The house had been originally listed at $21 million and then dropped to $18 million.

The four-bedroom, four-bath home is located in the famed Malibu Colony and has unobstructed ocean views. It has walls of glass, and features an indoor/outdoor living space with glass pocket doors leading to the outdoors. There are state-of-the-art appliances in the chef's kitchen and the master suite has a steam shower, spa tub and large walk-in closet.

The 3,800-square-foot house drew international attention last September when it was learned that a Wells Fargo bank vice president had moved herself in after the bank had foreclosed on the property. She was fired once her escapades became public. Some local Realtors said the bank blocked showings of the home. Neighbors reported large parties being thrown at the property, including some where guests would be ferried to the house from a yacht anchored off shore. The original owners were a couple who had been duped by Bernie Madoff.

Hilton & Hyland agent Chad Rogers had the listing and is believed to have also represented the buyer. Rogers declined to comment on the sale.

Sea Lane Drive, Estate of the Day

Properties that come with 339 feet of beach and occupy 6.6 acres just don't come on the market that often in Malibu and when they do, they command pretty high price tags. In this case, it's $55 million for a house expected to hit the MLS early this week. The home belongs to the estate of Max Palevsky, the founder of the computer chip giant Intel. Palevsky died in May at age 85.

His long-time Malibu house was designed by architect Joe Weiser in 1975. It was renovated by Italian designer Ettore Sottsass in 1984. The two-story Mediterranean villa has 11,313 square feet, with fire bedroom suites all in a separate wing. The master suite has two fireplaces, one in the sleeping area and one in the adjacent office. There are two side-by-side tubs, a sauna and a private deck with speakers. All of the bathrooms in the house have rare Catalina Tile Factory tiles. (The Catalina Island Tile and Pottery factory operated from 1927 to 1937 and the pottery and tiles produced during the factory's ten years are unique and highly sought-after.)

The home also has a theater room and a large formal dining room with a burl wood ceiling. The room has ocean views and a fireplace. The kitchen has three SubZero refrigerators, two dishwashers, oak cabinets, two cook tops and a butler's pantry with a sink, a wall of storage and large counter areas. There are 25-foot-tall ceilings in the living room, which also has a fireplace. The covered loggia entry was may play second fiddle to a secondary entrance that has a fountain and a geometric hedge garden basked on a section of The Alhambra in Spain with the foyer serving as an art gallery. there is a spa on the ocean side bluff with a fire pit and a large deck. Stairs lead to the private sandy beach.

Flooring in the house is a mix of tile with custom inlays and borders, cherrywood and some carpet. The home has a temperature-controlled wine cellar, stain glass windows and is surrounded by a 15' high wall with a large wooded gated entry for security. A guesthouse outside the walled estate has a bedroom, living room, bath and kitchen. The resort-style gardens feature Palm Groves, bougainvillea, a large Eucalyptus forest, an orchid shade house, coastal redwood trees, segos, coral trees, grassy lawns and a fruit tree orchard. There is a lighted tennis court with a half-bath and drinking fountain, plus a 20' x 40' pool with a large tiled fountain and speakers.

Serra Barn Retreat, Estate of the Day

serra barn
Malibu's Serra Retreat neighborhood doesn't enjoy the same high-profile as the Malibu Colony, and that's just the way the approximate 96 homeowners there like it. Both neighborhoods are gated and both count A-list celebrities among their residents. But that's about where the similarities end.

While the Colony homes are oceanfront or ocean view, they tend to be smaller, closer together, and despite what the guards at the gate would have you believe, many of the residents seek out the publicity they purport to shun. The Colony is about seeing and being seen. It's where big summer parties are held and the cache of owning or renting a home there has huge name-dropping appeal.

Give me the wooded canyons of Serra Retreat any day, where lot sizes are frequently measured in acres, the homes more original in style and residents are more serious about keeping a low-profile, at least at home. It's where Kelsey Grammer and Mel Gibson have their family compounds, as well as some of Hollywood's top producers, directors and agents.

New to the market is this Hamptons-style barn, listed at $14,795,000.The home is tucked away on 2.6 acres of rolling lawns with views of the foothills. Private, serene and dramatic: It epitomizes Serra Retreat. It was created by architect Michael Kovac with the interior designs by Vanessa Alexander. It blends modern details and has an expansive lofty feel. There is an impressively seamless indoor-outdoor flow with the use of rosewood slate flooring both indoor and out, and full-wall sliders and walls of glass.

The six-bedroom home has a full outdoor kitchen including a pizza oven, and several outdoor dining and living areas with fire pits. There is a gym and oversized pool with a pool cabana, and a three-car garage. The master suite has a sitting area and soaking tub.

Entry to the neighborhood is controlled by two guarded gates.

Matt Rapf of Pritchett-Rapf, Malibu, is the listing agent.

Villa Cascata, Estate of the Day

The Villa Cascata is right out of the pages of Tuscany. Except it's in Malibu, which on some levels is actually better since Tuscany estates don't come with white water views.

This Italian Villa evokes a sense of old world charm, has privacy from the world, and contains endless entertaining possibilities. Nothing beats a classy home with lots of toys. The main home has more than 14,000 square feet and sits on about 20 private acres with 180-degree unobstructed views of the Santa Monica Bay and Catalina Island. There is a spectacular resort-style saltwater pool with fountains, a swim gym and a raised spa. The grounds include elegant formal gardens, a covered-heated loggia and outdoor fireplace, a Koi pond and a sports court. There is a separate 2,000-square-foot theater and games room, equipped with a bar and a guest suite.

The home has seven bedrooms, 7.5 bathrooms, a formal dining room with a hand-painted ceiling, a chef's kitchen with hand-honed floors and a carved fireplace with imported stones in the living room. The family room opens to the pool and outside entertainment area.

"Million Dollar Listing" house in Malibu to be Auctioned -- at 65 Percent Off Original listing price

malibu auction houseApparently not even a starring role on what is arguably the most-watched real estate "reality" show -- Bravo's "Million Dollar Listing" -- was enough to attract buyers to this 5,634 square foot home in Malibu. The canyon property is headed for a live on-site auction on May 22 with the opening bid set at $1.9 million -- substantially down (65%) from the original listing price of $5,495,000.

Expect the house to sell for just under $3 million, says Malibu Prudential agent and local blogger, Mike Gardner. Gardner lives near the listing himself and actively tracks the local Malibu market on his web site. The auction has a reserve, which if not met, means the house won't be sold.

The four-bedroom architectural home is located in a private, gated canyon with mature oak trees and streams. It is a short walk to the beach through a tunnel and the home has ocean views. It sits on a flat acre and there is a detached one-bedroom, one-bath guest house. The state-of-the-art kitchen includes stainless steel appliances. The flooring is white marble, imported from Greece. The driveway and motor court are constructed of Arizona flagstone. Katie Bentzen of Arete Estates shares the listing with Hilton & Hyland's Chad Rogers, one of the three "Million Dollar Listing" stars.

Sally Field in Malibu, Estate of the Day

sally fieldActress Sally Field has played a variety of roles on television and in the movies, including most recently starring as the Walker family matriarch on "Brothers & Sisters". She is now, as the LA Times Hot Property column reports, hoping for a role as successful home seller. Her Malibu home has the same sort of casual class embodied by Field herself.

The five-bedroom home is a ranch-style home built in 1958. It is on three acres of land and has a separate guest apartment. The property also includes a pool, tennis court and a three-stall horse paddock and has direct access to riding trails on more than 2,000 acres of park land (the home is located in the hills of Malibu and is a bit away from the ocean). The home itself includes an updated kitchen, master wing and guest wing. I'm a sucker for any home with good shelf space and Ms. Field's home abounds in places to relax and read including a book-lined sunroom, a media room dominated by large couches and what appears to be a large screened-in porch. This home is listed at $6.95 million. (pictures removed per listing agent request).
