Pastrovich Yacht Design, Transformers Of Luxury Yachts

Pastrovich Studio is the designer for the WallyPower range, including the still-otherworldly tri-turbine WallyPower 118. Turns out it also does a fair bit of contract work for individuals, and one of its latest projects is a concept to refit a ship that began life as an ocean-going tug boat, turning it into a luxury yacht.

Conversions of working vessels into motor yachts are nothing new, and heavy lifters like tugs and icebreakers are among those chosen most often for the switch. The 77.4-meter (253.9-foot) hauler dating from 1975, the subject of this retrofit, was designed and built by Germany's Schichau-Unterwesser in Bremerhaven.

Previously used as a support vessel for a luxury yacht in the Middle East, the Pastrovich transformation envisions keeping the 'historical' features intact: the forward superstructure, funnel and two masts. The aft superstructure is reworked to blend into the comprehensive line of the boat, and when it's finished the tug will officially take its place tied at #79 on Superyachts.com's list of largest motor yachts of 2010, right behind it is its sister ship, the tug Lone Ranger – already a luxury yacht that is, also being refitted by Pastrovich.

Lavish Spec Yacht Ready For Launch

With the return of luxury spending there seem to be glimmers of hope in the yacht business. That could be good news for Tacoma, Washington's Northcoast Yachts, a company that has created a lavish 125-foot spec yacht that is nearing completion. The yacht is the most luxurious boat the company has built. They started over two years ago looking toward selling it in Europe but have found U.S. interest as well. It has nine bathrooms and five staterooms. Details include Italian onyx, leather floors made from repurposed car seats, marble sinks, flat television screens that fold into the ceiling and a floating stainless steel spiral staircase. The Tacoma News Tribune reports that the yacht's main steering wheel is modeled after a 250 GT Ferrari and a white leather couch was hand built in Italy. The yacht will be launched Monday into Commencement Bay. It is for sale for $22.2 million.

The Haida G Is For Sale

One of our favorite vintage yachts, the 218-foot Haida G is for sale. The yacht, which was originally built in 1929 and was restored to its former glory a few years ago. It has seven cabins, a library and a charming main salon. Modern touches include a padded sundeck area with a Jacuzzi. The Haida G has been chartered for a few years (at 245,000 euros per week). The yacht's white and bright cottage-like design is a world away from the glossy wood and muted neutrals seen in most luxury yachts. She is selling for 28 million euros.
