Milton Point, Estate of the Day

For many New Yorkers, realizing you've grown up happens when you take stock and note that you finally have enough money for a home outside the city (read: more than two rooms), you need or want more space, and you cannot stand apartment living one second longer. Enter Westchester, the suburb that offers space and upscale living but is close to the heart of NYC via a train ride on Metro-North.

Here's one option: This 1904 Milton Point Colonial, situated on 2.55 acres in Rye City, N.Y., offers 6,963 square feet, 14 rooms (seven BR, 5.5 BA), a shoreline pool and spa, two-car garage, alarm system, deck, eat-in kitchen, fireplace, high ceilings, skylights, walkout basement, and wet bar. Taxes are $112,675. Asking price: $7,595,000.

Luxury Homes in NYC's Chelsea at The Caledonia

Filed under: Estates, Services, Real Estate Developments

No matter the economy or state of the world, New Yorkers like their luxury, and one of the finest recent examples of upscale living is Chelsea's The Caledonia. Expertly built and managed by The Related Companies, this new hybrid building (includes condo owners and renters), which overlooks the High Line, already is sold out in its ownership division. As of a few weeks ago, however, rentals were still available. Sizes range from studio to three-bedroom, and some of the 190 units have terraces.

I thought I had a nice apartment until I saw the lobby, let alone the units! Eco-friendly bamboo floors and cabinetry, top-end appliances, large windows, key fob entry, spa-like bathrooms, and the Holy Grail of the NYC dweller -- a washer and dryer in each unit -- make me want to sell my place and move right in. And if I lived in a Related building now, I could easily do that, as Related makes it easy to transfer to another company unit within NYC, or even in another city.

Rosemary Beach, Estate of the Day

I love this house. I've never been to Rosemary Beach, Florida but this home would be reason enough to go. In fact the whole community is filled with similar homes. The community was established in 1995 in Florida's northwest panhandle and features unique architecture that is inspired by the look of Caribbean island towns.

The four bedroom home has a plantation style with large wraparound verandas and heavy wood shutters. No surprise that this home was published in the March 2006 edition of Veranda magazine, a magazine that focuses on gracious Southern homes. Inside it makes excellent use of muted seaside colors on the walls contrasted with blinding white trim and a fancy casual ocean theme. it has a huge kitchen which was designed by a New Orleans chef. There are plenty of glass doors and windows to let the sea breezes in.

The property also includes an equally adorable 600 square foot carriage house with beautiful gulf views. This estate is listed at $7.995 million. After the jump, get swept away.

The European Estate at Honomakau, North Kohala, Estate of the Day

Can one color work in a whole house? We've seen white walls, and houses done in complementary tones but this expansive estate at Honomakau, North Kohala on the island of Hawaii takes one striking terracotta color and uses it to great effect in the kitchen, the hall and even in a bedroom that currently home to a fantastic gilded bed. The six-bedroom ome has an ideal location, 20 acres with ocean views set on a rocky cliff above a private beach cove. The home is located in a gated community and has a private elevator, four-car garage, fitness center and an outdoor hot tub with a fabulous view. The home is listed at $19 million. After the jump, it's just peachy.

French in Atlanta, Estate of the Day

On Tuxedo Row in Atlanta many of the houses were built in the past few years and yet have the look of much older homes, mainly because they pull a lot of materials from other places. Last time we did an estate in this area we found an English estate. This one is lavished with French charm.

The home's foyer uses reclaimed flooring from France and the dining room has wood panels taken from an old chateau outside of Paris. The living room features antique Zuber panels and a marble fireplace and the study/library has a brick masonry fireplace with an 18th century mantle. Things are more modern in the kitchen with a Viking gas range with grill and double ovens, two Traulsen refrigerators and a Bosch dishwasher. The master suite is on the main level and has two bathrooms. There are four bedrooms total. Other details include a wine cellar, a laundry room with a pet washing area and an exercise room. The yard includes a fountain, a pavilion with a fireplace and a greenhouse but no pool. This home is listed at $5.995 million.

Tempe, Arizona: Estate of the Day

What is it that makes a house special? Today's estate in Tempe, Arizona has a number of desirable features including its own two-acre lake and seven total acres of tranquil Arizona land. The home itself is a single-level dwelling that rambles over 11,000 square feet. It has gorgeous wood ceilings, cool stone floors, a curved stone fireplace and stained glass details. The home gets much of its charm from the uses of arched windows and doorways. The master suite has a gas fireplace and opens to a private outdoor spa.  One of the most impressive features is the incredibly over-the-top million-dollar kitchen designed by Kitchen Expo. There is also a two-story guest house, expansive outdoor entertaining area and parking for 10 cars. It is listed at $.8.5 million. Pictures of the interior, including that ridiculous kitchen, after the jump.

Hidden Brook, Estate of the Day

Today's estate is another question of taste. The exterior style is a bit of a hodgepodge. The info says it was built in 1993 (designed by Lawrence Stern) but the style seems vintage 1970s to me. It sits on nearly eight acres and has a approximately 12,000 square feet of space. The five-bedroom home has a lot of special features including eight-foot bronze entry doors, a living room with a floating ceiling and a family room that has an onyx fireplace. Other rooms include a media room with acoustical paneling, a library with a two-story-high curved wall of windows and a tall marble fireplace. There is also a private guest suite that has a kitchenette, living room, bedroom and full bath. One of the major charms of this home is its indoor pool area which also includes a sauna, exercise room and changing area on a lower level.  The grounds include winding paths and the hidden brook from which the property gets its name. All this and it is listed at $4.45 million. Not a bad price for the square footage and land offered but the style of the house may make it a tricky sell. Interior shots and poor choices in furnishings after the jump.

Today's estate comes with a discount. According to the Rocky Mountain News, Stephen Jacobsen, who made his fortune with the Denver company Qwest, originally  put his Littleton, Colorado mansion on the market for $17 million two years ago. The home, Sognare Estate, is an expansive  23,291-square-foot home on nearly six acres. It has seven bedrooms and the grounds include pools and fountains.
