Luella Fashion Line Closing Up Shop

The talented Luella Bartley, anointed Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards in 2008, is the latest fashion victim of the recession. Her label, Luella, is being forced to close down following the loss of one of its main suppliers and has stopped trading. Last month Luella's Italian production company Carla Carini shut down which meant that the orders for the spring/summer 2010 collection could not be fulfilled. This started a chain reaction in which the company in charge of distribution, VSQ, announced it was withdrawing its backing.

Luella's punk-meets-pretty aesthetic has been much beloved by England's young and fashionable including Alexa Chung, Lily Allen and Pixie Geldof. Bartley launched Luella in 1999 and opened her flagship store on Mayfair's Brook Street in 2007. In a statement she said that she hopes the Luella girl aesthetic can go on in some form and is considering ways to keep the brand alive.

Luella Sheepskin Fury Boxy Bag, Handbag of the Day

While the bags of fall were large, to say the least, we're pleased to note that some of the handbags we're seeing for winter are smaller and more feminine. When it comes to the Luella Sheepskin Fury Boxy Bag, we have a bag that is not only cute and girly, but with a remarkably cute name, as well. It is only 8"x11"x6" and is made of quilted orange suede, with contrasting white topstitching. The bag is trimmed with a chocolate leather and edged with ultra-soft sheepskin, which also lines the interior of the purse. The chain-link shoulder strap has a leather section at the top to make it comfortable to wear, but the chain itself actually adds a little bit of an edge to the bag, keeping it from looking overly adorable or clunky. Price: $995.

Luella Stevie Leather Tote, Handbag of the Day

This classic tote is one of the pieces in Luella's new fall collection and its serious, but elegant, look is a distinct contrast from the spring/summer styles that we saw earlier this year when the designer partnered with Target. Like other fall bags we have seen, the Stevie Leather Tote features a harness of leather that wraps around it, descending from the rolled leather handles, but the thick, soft leather and the dangling heart-shaped charms take the edge off what might have been a severe design. The tote is made of a dark chocolate leather and has silver hardware, including a toggle that secures the bag's flap closure. The lining is cream-colored suede. Price: $950.

Luella Boston Satchel, Handbag of the Day

Sleek, stylish and incredibly appropriate for the start of the Triple Crown racing season, which kicks off next weekend with the 132nd annual Kentucky Derby, the Luella Boston Satchel might be the perfect bag to take to the races. Actually, its textured navy leather would be difficult to match to the appropriate hat if you are actually going to be at the Derby, so perhaps the bag is best used for everyday wear. It is quite roomy at  9 x 14 x 7-inches and has a suede lining with two interior pockets. The thoroughbred design on the front of the bag is applique and all the detailing is done in gold. Price: $975.
