Willow Chair

When I first heard the name Willow Chair I pictured a softer looking design with rounded or flowing shapes, but in reality the focus is on vertical and horizontal lines. Designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1903 for The Willow Tea Rooms in Glasgow, it's inspired by his interest in Japanese design. You can see the shape of a tree formed by the checkers and straight lines of the chair back, and now available from Design Icons it's made of black lacquered ash with a cushion of leather, velvet, or cotton. £1155

Searching for stylish outdoor furniture that's comfortable, portable, and convertible? Check out the Fatboy Outdoor. Designed by Jukka Setala it has a UV treated heavy denier polyester exterior which has been coated in PVC to make it both water and fade resistant. It's filled with millions of tiny EPS pieces which makes it great to sit on in any number of arrangements. It can be folded, propped, or rolled, which means you can sit on it, lean on it, or sleep on it comfortably. Plus it has two large straps that provide both additional support in some sitting positions and a means to make transporting easier. And of course it comes in several fun bright colors, and washes clean with just a damp cloth. $349

AGK Ball Lounge Chair

The AGK Ball lounge chair was designed by Andre Agassi and Stefanie Graf and is part of a complete Agassi Graff Collection that includes furniture designs for indoors and out. Geometrical and appearing to "float on air" (I don't know if I would say that), this lounge chair is made of hand-shaped, welded, powder-coated, weather-resistant steel wire that is hand-wrapped in dark brown polypropel synthetic rattan. And the seat cushion, of course, also comes in weather-resistant fabric, shown here in cream. 45"x45"x35"

La Pomme Rouge

Chicago is cementing itself as a must stop for a foodie's tour of the U.S. The latest tempting offering in the Windy City is La Pomme Rouge. The lavish lounge sets a Belle Epoque scene with soft velvety couches, antique furnishings and a rich and moody color palate. The menu is designed for decadence. There is an expansive wine and cocktails list and a menu of deluxe treats including foie gras torchons with french green lentil, red onion preserve, sauterne gelée, and house-made brioche, a full caviar service, a traditional charcuterie plate, cheese selections and a quartet of oysters garnished with melon granite, Skyy berry mignonette, grapefruit sabayon and caviar-avacado mousse. Unique drinks include the Pomme Pomme, a take on the apple martini using Three Olives green apple vodka, Cointreau and Apple Pucker liqueur topped with a dried apple chip and a serpent ring and the Cafe et Beignet, an evening take on a morning classic that features Starbucks coffee liqueur, Baileys Irish cream and Van Gogh Double Espresso vodka garnished with a miniature donut.

Darwin Wood Arm Chair

Laura Ashley gets it right pretty often, but she definitely did something great with this effort. Overall I just love this Darwin Wood Arm Chair. It's a mix of retro and modern with a nice sense of earthiness, it's cheerful without being obnoxious, and it's surprisingly stylish considering in this print it has such a neutral color scheme. But it comes in 4 color options, is easy to clean and care for, and its curved wooden arms and puffy rounded seats make it more than just a little inviting -- it may become the favorite seat in the house. £525

Best Business Class Lounges in the World

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Spas

Those who travel frequently often find themselves in between destinations, killing time in an airport. Whether it is a flight delay or a long layover, that downtime can be anything but pleasant. Huge crowds, long lines, and the general chaos that reigns in an airport is not conducive to working or relaxing. That's where the business-class lounges come in. A respite from the madness, these havens range from the very basic to the very luxurious - and knowing which is where can come in handy when planning your itinerary.

Each year, Skytrax ranks the 10 best business-class lounges in the world based on data that includes customer surveys and business research group interviews. The results are in and in the number one spot is Virgin Atlantic's Clubhouse at Heathrow Airport. In addition to a complete office, library, and video projection system, those looking for first class relaxation will find everything they desire. Take a cat nap on a daybed in a hideaway mezzanine, enjoy a meal in one of several dining options or have a drink at the bar. Or use the time to visit the Cowshed Spa, where you can get a facial, massage or even a tan. If all that pampering musses your hair, you can stop by the Bumble and Bumble Hair Salon.

A few North American carriers are beginning to upgrade their lounge offerings, but for now you won't find any of them of Skytrax's top ten list.

Corona Chair & Foot Stool

The Corona chair and foot stool was designed by Poul M. Volther and was first released in 1964. It's futuristic "floating" design is not only artistic but also functional, created to give maximum support to the spinal column and ribs of the person sitting in it. When it was originally released the frame was made of solid oak, but today it's crafted in stainless steel with upholstered cushioned seats. The name "Corona" comes from the fact that the shapes of the chair are reminiscent of the phases the sun goes through during an eclipse, and those shapes can either be used as backrests or armrests, depending on your preference. Available in a variety of colors, you can have one for £549.

Harp Chair

Now I haven't had the luxury of actually sitting in this chair, but based on the looks of it and the fact that it's largely made of string makes me think it's probably very comfortable. Designed by Jordan Hoveltskov in 1963 the harp chair is surprisingly simple: it's a lounge chair made of 2 pieces of solid wood (your choice of natural ash, black stained ash, American cherry, or natural oak) combined with string. That's it. It does look a little like a harp from certain angles, but don't get your hopes up -- it doesn't play music. $1128-$11250

Philippe Starck Prive for Cassina

At the spring Milan furniture fair, Philippe Starck once again brought the sexy with his Prive collection for Cassina. The pieces are made of black or white tufted leather. The leather lounge chair is particularly alluring. It is a big sprawling expanse with armrests, chair backs that seem to invite a variety of different lounging positions. The lounge also has leather strips along the base and leather hand-straps on the back cushions. There are also two different type of types of padded chairs available. It's not revolutionary but it does look like a perfect match for some of Starck's modern apartment and hotel designs.

Cleopatra Classic Heated Lounge Chair

This sounds just heavenly: the Cleopatra Classic Heated Lounge Chair. Cut from a single piece of high-density limestone, the entire chair emanates radiant heat for the ultimate "warmth therapy" experience. Ergonomically designed for comfort (yes, a large slab of stone can be comfortable), it can be used indoors or out and is easily cleaned just by wiping it down with a cloth. It also comes in a variety of colors, although I like the plain and natural stone pictured -- looks very "spa-like." $14,650

Yin Yang Signature Collection Patio Furniture

From Dedon comes the Yin Yang Signature Collection outdoor lounge set. The chairs can be positioned separately or nested together to create a classic vision of the symbol for which they are named, fitting to form a perfect circle with contrasting cushions creating the "eyes" on each side -- the arrangement of the seats encouraging communication without being too intimate. Made of a weather resistant fiber material in a balance of platinum and bronze shades, I think they bring a somewhat indoor quality to typical outdoor patio furniture. But I've said it before and I'll say it again...how comfortable are they? They look a little stiff.

First class fliers on Qantas have a new place to relax in Sydney. The airline recently opened a new flagship lounge designed by famed industrial designer Marc Newson. Features of the lounge include chair-side waiter service, concierge service and complimentary spa treatments. The Sydney lounge will include huge American oak sculptures that separate the lounge space into defined areas, a Payot Paris day spa, a 48-seat open kitchen restaurant with menus by Neil Perry, a library stocked with newspapers and magazines, books and board games, a dedicated entertainment zone with banks of plasma screens, marble-lined shower suites and business facilities with 11 PC workstations. The lounge is part of Qantas's luxury push in anticipation of getting their first Airbus A380 in 2008.

Jeanne Scandura Float Wave Chaise

Jeanne Scandura, landscape architect and founder of Float Furniture, intended her designs to evoke a sensual modernism. Using materials inspired by surf culture, she gives hard surfaces movement by sculpting them into graceful curves. The wave chaise is cast from fiberglass-reinforced resin and is suitable for use inside or out.
The chaise is available in several wood veneer finishes for indoor use or with a marine-grade coating in a rainbow of colors for outdoors. Prices start at $3,800.

Soft Pipe Lounge

If you are interested in ultra-modern, minimalist and/or industrial design, the Soft Pipe Lounge is a piece of furniture worth a close look. The seat was designed by Samanta Snidaro and Andrea Fino, the two founders of Sand & Birch Design Studio. It is made of large iron pipes and has a soft, but not exactly plush, leather cover over the actual seat area of the chaise. The leather can be dyed to any color, including pink, but the base of the chair is always metallic.

"Bar" Does Not Mean "Sports Bar"

The omission of words can be just as powerful as the addition of them. So when I say that I'm going to go enjoy a cocktail at a bar while the college superbowl whatever-it's-called is going on, I mean exactly that. What a perfect time to go out and enjoy a nice glass of scotch and a cigar; the bars won't be crowded because Johnny Sportsfan will be watching some team that isn't UT play some other team. Meanwhile, it's the perfect time for me to sip a glass of Johnnie Blue Label and not be bothered. While it may seem like a superficial semantic argument, it also reflects on our society turning away from classic bars to hybrid drinking establishments - some with their 60" plasma TVs with the ESPN logo burned in to them, and others filled with loud techno music and females who apparently haven't paid for a drink in their life. Though the cocktail was born in either Boston or New Orleans (I'd prefer to think Boston) and was perfected in the time of prohibition, it's hard to find a quality bar in America these days. I can think of two (VBar, Cohiba) in this city, maybe a half dozen in the metropolitan area I'm originally from (the bar at Mac's is a personal favorite), but that doesn't really count for much. Sure, there are plenty of real bars in New York, but The City has plenty of everything. I was in Paris a couple of years ago, and it was hard to not find a nice bar. I just think it's sad that the place where the cocktail was born no longer honors it, and those who truly take pleasure in what they drink are forced to do so with people who drink for sport. So, do any Luxist readers care to share what real bars still exist that they frequent?
