Twenty rural retreats spanning the breadth of North America and over a century of architectural and social history are featured in author and photographer Bret Morgan's stylish new book Rustic. Examples include the Ames Gate Lodge, H. H. Richardson's "sublime pile of boulders" in Massachusetts; Camp Topridge, Marjorie Merriweather Post's rustic luxe compund in the Adirondacks; the Arts and Crafts masterpiece Charles Millard Pratt House in southern California; Fortune Rock, George Howe's striking modernist home on the coast of Maine; Robert A. M. Stern's nostalgic Spruce Lodge, hidden high in the Colorado Rockies; and Ledge House, Peter Bohlin's vision of rustic modernism in the Catoctin Mountains of Maryland. All exemplify an "artfully informal aesthetic that celebrates the beauty of the natural world."

Anedodi is designed for families or groups to share a vacation getaway. The lodge on Lake Norfolk has a contemporary style with double rainfall showers, egg baths, and woven circular daybeds. Green features such as dual flush toilets, recycled tiles, reclaimed wood furniture, bamboo bedding, and organic towels are in evidence. The weekly rate in the high season is $5,995 and includes daily maid service and a fully stocked refrigerator but if you book before July 31 they will take 20 percent off your stay.

The Strangest Hotels in the World

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Believe it or not, staying in posh hotel after posh hotel can get old. After awhile they all start to look the same and you may find yourself longing for something different.

Different you say? How different??? Because you can go as "different" as you want, and most of the time you can do it without giving up the designer linens and room service. You can stay underwater off the coast of Florida, in a treehouse in the Carribean with your own private beach, or how about something cooler like the frozen glamour of Sweden's ICEHOTEL? If that's a little too extreme for you there's always the fun themes at the Pitcher Inn and Spa, or the strangely angular rooms in the Kube Hotel.

See the entire list in this slideshow...so where do you want to go first? I'll take me a treehouse in Nairobi.

The South Long Island Nature Lodge is a private island located off the coast of Australia in the Whitsundays. Guests travel to the island on a private helicopter and stay in waterfront bungalows.
