Espanta Suegras, A New Mexican Liqueur

The latest tequila-based import from Mexico is Espanta Suegras, a liqueur with herbal flavors that can serve as an aperitif or an after-dinner drink. The drink is based on an old family recipe that came to Mexico via Barcelona, Spain. Each bottle of Espanta Suegras comes with a blow out party favor which in Mexico are colloquially called "espanta suegras," literally meaning "the one for scaring off mothers-in-law." The new liqueur is currently available in Arizona, California, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, and Wisconsin, and will be available in additional states soon. It sells for around $30.

Celtic Crossing Liqueur

Put together Irish whiskey, French cognac, a bit of honey and you get Celtic Crossing liqueur, a honey-flavored liqueur from Ireland. The liqueur can be used in coffee or combined with soda. It's from Castle Brands, the same folks behind Boru Vodka and they have a new campaign called Get Connected which allows people to go on the website and share stories of how they discovered Celtic Crossing. The liqueur sells for around $20.

St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur

Elderflower liqueur sounds like something old and fusty but St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur is a French artisanal drink with a light taste. The flower and fruit notes and the mild sweetness make it an excellent summer quaff. Our friend Jonathan over at Slashfood tested it out a few months ago and listed some excellent recipes for cocktails using St. Germain. It's natural companion is a light white wine (sparkling or not) to which it adds a very refreshing tang. This and Prosecco would make a great apertif on a warm night. The bottle design makes it pretty appealing too. It can be found online for $27.99.

Danny DeVito's Premium Limoncello

A few months ago, Danny DeVito appeared on The View in an inebriated state. At the time he blamed it on too many Limocellos with George Clooney. In what should be an April Fool's joke but is actually real, De Vito is coming out with his own line of the lemon-flavored Italian liqueur. Danny DeVito's Premium Limoncello is produced and bottled on an estate of lemon trees on Italy's Sorrento peninsula. His Limoncello is made from the zest of the lemon to create a 60-proof liqueur best served very cold or over ice. The Limoncello is bottled in a black bottle with a transparent lemon on the front and a 750ml bottle will be $23.99.

U.S. Gets A Taste Of Zwack

Are you ready for Zwack? Zwack is a Hungarian liqueur which is now being rolled out in the states courtesy of Diego North America. The liqueur was test marketed in Buffalo, New York and will be distributed in Ohio starting March 1. Zwack is known as Unicum in Hungary and has been made since the 1790s. It contains more than 40 herbs and is aged in oak casks aged for at least six months. It has a dark amber color and smells of herbs and citrus. It can be served as an appertif or a digestif and according to Internet Wines, which is selling it for $34 a bottle, the Hungarians steep prunes in it and serve the prunes with it. I'm guessing it probably tastes like a spicier version of Chartreuse. Anyone out there tasted Zwack yet?

Jago Strawberry Cream Vodka

Jago's cream vodkas are made with rich cream and vodka, the world's best selling spirit, to create a surprisingly clean spirit that is a wonderful choice for cocktails and after dinner drinks alike. Jago Strawberry Cream Vodka, which is made with a vanilla cream vodka base and natural strawberry puree, was originally created specifically for a South African market, but now seems to have wider availability. Because strawberries are so closely associated with romance, this spirit is a good one to add to you liquor cabinet before Valentine's Day. Serve it over ice or drizzled over a bowl of ice cream and fresh strawberries. It is just $25 per bottle.

The Macallan Brings Out The Sweet Stuff For The Ladies

I've sung the praises of various forms of the Macallan since Luxist began but apparently as a woman, I may be in the minority of women who find the single malt appealing. In order to appeal to female drinkers in the U.S. the Macallan has created Amber, a liqueur with maple and pecan flavors. The Scotsman reports that Amber is being tested in Washington, Denver and Seattle after small-scale trials in Boston. It may have met with resistance from some purists but one of my favorite experts, Kevin Erskine of The Scotch Blog seems to be a fan saying that it is "s sweet without being cloying at all." Amber can be found for between $30 to $35 at various outlets.

Limited Edition Swarovski Alizé

The story of Alizé says that the drink was created when a brandy maker fell in love with a jam maker and the two came together into a drink. More likely, this combination would have produced some boozy dessert a la Nigella Lawson, but that is neither here nor there. The drink claims to be the " original drink of love" and in honor of Valentine's Day, Alizé has commissioned a limited run of bottles that are completely covered in sparkling Swarovski crystals. Each bottle is £1000 (almost $2,000) and is filled with Rose Alizé, which is a blend of French Vodka, Cognac, passion fruit, strawberry, lychee and rose.

Perique Tobacco Liqueur

Tobacco, while not the most popular of substances these days, has long been known for its appealing scent. Unlike the smoke of a cigar or cigarette, tobacco has a rich earthy, spicy scent that many enjoy and it is this essence that Jade Liqueurs has attempted to capture in their new liqueur, Perique. Inspired directly by Perique tobacco, the "rarest and most precious tobacco in the entire world," known for its bold flavors of fig and peppers. The tobacco-flavored liqueur was carefully handcrafted to faithfully reproduce the "nuances" of its namesake. It even, somehow, managed to incorporate the tobacco into the distillation process. The 62 proof liqueur will be sold only in very limited quantities at $42 per bottle.

Kajmir Vanilla Liqueur

As in desserts, vanilla in liquor is often desirable simply because it is so versatile. I've seen plenty of vanilla vodkas but the new liqueur Kajmir is a combination of vodka, brandy and vanilla which should be a great addition to holiday cocktails. I haven't tested it out yet but it definitely seems like more of a mixer than a sipper. It retails for around $20.

The World's First Organic Cream Liqueur

We've seen plenty of organic wine, vodka and whisky, now the first organic Irish Cream liqueur, Bloom Mountain is available from Brogans Irish Cream. The cream, sugar, alcohol and flavorings are organically produced. The production processes have been approved by The Organic Trust and carries their seal of approval. The cream used is 100% organic Irish cream. The liqueur was awarded a Silver Medal in The International Wine & Spirit Competition this year and sells for around $15 per bottle.

Redcliff American Liqueur

Does America need its own signature liqueur? The folks at Redcliff think so. Frank Arcella, a former executive of Seagram's and creator of Corazon tequila created the new 65-proof Redcliff American liqueur which is a "combination of 15 secret ingredients." The all-American flavor palate as envisioned by Recliff involves the taste of cola and vanilla. Redcliff is available in a few markets around the U.S. currently and they have plans to roll it out nationwide by the end of the year. It sells for $17.95. Before you dash out and buy a bottle you might want to check out this review from Dave, who recently blogged about his Redcliff experience. He makes it seem pretty scary.

Mozart Liqueurs

Yum, chocolate liqueur. The Moodie Report says that the Austrian company Mozart Distillerie will be showing its relaunched range of liqueurs at the IAADFS Duty Free Show of the Americas in Florida this month. There are four varieties of the chocolate liqueur: Mozart Gold, Mozart White, Mozart Black, and Amadé ChocOrange.  The liqueurs use a cuvée of two varieties of cocoa - Forastero and Trinitario - specially produced for Mozart Distillerie. The blend is mixed with high-proof alcohol and stored. This results in a cocoa distillate which is the core of each of the liqueurs. The Gold is chocolate and cream, the White is white chocolate, cream and Bourbon Vanilla, the Black uses 87% cocoa macerate (for a darker chocolate flavor) and the Amadé ChocOrange features the flavor of red oranges mixed with chocolate. The Mozart website features a database of drink recipes if you aren't content to sip your chocolate straight.

Absente Liqueur

The lure of absinthe is legendary. Oscar Wilde, Toulouse-Lautrec and Degas are just some who surrendered to the spell of the unique green liqueur. Absinthe has been banned in the United States since 1915 but  Absente is a modern version of the original Absinthe recipe only without the ban-inducing and hallucinogenic wormwood. The wormwood has been replaced with Southern Wormwood, a legal and similar-tasting substance. At 110 proof if you have more than a glass or two you might not miss the wormwood one bit. It's a bit bitter so the traditional method of adding in water and sugar via a slotted spoon is advised. it sells for around $40 and would add a Bohemian touch to any Valentine's Day plans.

Carnivo XO Liqueur

Carnivo XO is a new neon green liqueur that is a mix of Menuet XO Cognac, French vodka, and a proprietary tropical berry flavor mix. Carnivo Unlimited is the first African American company to exclusively import Cognac into the United States and this new product is aimed at the young, hip, multiethnic crowd. Menuet Cognac is made from 100% Grande Champagne Region 1st Cru grapes. Brightly colored liqueurs like Hypnotiq have enjoyed great success with younger drinkers and the neon color of the drink is eye-catching. What does it taste like? I haven't sampled yet but Alcohol Reviews said that the 40 proof liqueur is very sweet, tasting like "spiked Gatorade." Scary.
