The Fashion Statement: It Bags are Back to Basic

Filed under: Handbags, The Fashion Statement

Toss your roomy totes, slim clutches and bohemian bags with hardware and fringe to the back of the closet.

The It bags for fall are small and basic; ladylike, almost to the point of prim; and minimalist. Square-shaped or rectangular, the handbags often have long shoulder straps and feature a very simple fold-over envelope style flap with a simple clasp. Color schemes are fairly basic, too, with most in solid brown and tan leather and black.

These bags resemble the "pocket books" you once plucked from your mother's or grandmother's closet to play dress-up. They are ultra understated and have a conservative '80s power suit feel. With long shoulder straps the bags rest at the hip.

Hermès has resurrected the Constance, a model with an H clasp that can be worn over the shoulder or messenger style.

Phoebe Philo introduced Celine's Classic Box, a small bag with compartments, closed by a square gold clasp. The fashion flock has been seen with the bag in black, brown and red leather.

Ralph Lauren has one in shiny brown croc with a gleaming round gold clasp. Fendi has also brought back a classic: the Logo Square bag emblazoned with Fs.

Lindsay Lohan Out At Ungaro?

Last fall saw Lindsay Lohan walking the runway as she unveiled her new fashion collaboration with Ungaro. But while Lohan was in Paris for the shows recently she was not at the Ungaro presentation. Black Book reports that Ungaro owner Asim Adullah told WWD that Lohan was not invovled with the latest collection. It's not known if she has been officially let go. Reviews of Lohan's 1980s-inspired line were less than kind. The fashions included sequined heart pasties used not just to cover nipples but as forehead adornment, neon colors, harem pants and shoulder-baring tops recalling the very worst of 1980s fashion. But perhaps the outrage was preferable to the distinct lack of excitement over Ungaro's latest offerings. Booth Moore of the LA Times says that while the collection was probably better for the being Lohanless, the print blouses, cropped pants and ruched cocktail dresses by Estrella Archs were inoffensive but not very exciting. Is it better to be crazy and derided or predictable and forgettable? We'll have to wait and see if Ungaro decides to let Lindsay back at the drawing board.

UPDATE: Lindsay Lohan confirmed that she is no longer with Ungaro and made a mysterious reference to "legal things" that are going on with the deal.

Austrian Billionaire Pays $150,000 for a Date with Lindsay Lohan

Austrian billionaire Richard Lugner is continuing his 19 year old tradition of buying a celebrity date to one of Austria's premier social events, the Vienna Opera Ball, and this year the lucky lady will be none other than Lindsay Lohan. Lugner is a 77 year old divorced father of three that apparently gets a kick out of paying for bombshell celebrity escorts -- in years past he's had the likes of Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson, and Sophia Loren on his arm for the event. This year Lohan was his second choice, after British actress Katie Price became unavailable, and rumors suggest she's turning out to be a high-maintenance date as she's refusing to choose a gown ahead of time and Lugner is going to be partly responsible for making sure she doesn't drink during the event (including having all the liquor removed from the mini-bar in her hotel room).

Photos from Abramovich's $5 Million New Year's Bash

The kids at Gawker got their hands on pix from Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich's lavish New Year's Eve bash in St. Bart's which my colleague Deirdre Woollard first reported on. Abramovich is said to have spent about $5 million on the bash for 250 of the chosen, including Lindsay Lohan, Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr.

Despite some bad weather, the party proceeded as planned at the 70-acre $89 million estate Abramovich purchased on the posh island back in September, with loads of fancy food, an ocean of champagne, fireworks fired off from one of his superyachts and musical performances by Gwen Stefani, Beyoncé, and Prince. Lindsay Lohan Jumping Back Into Fashion Design

Lindsay Lohan Jumping Back Into Fashion DesignDespite (or maybe in spite of) being slammed in the fall for her Ungaro fashion collection, sometime actress and more often tabloid fodder Lindsay Lohan plans to get it together in 2010 and keep on designing. WWD reported that Lohan is set to expand her leggings label, 6126, to a full-fledged contemporary apparel line for fall 2010, with more lifestyle brand extensions planned for 2011. This will be in addition to her role as artistic adviser at Ungaro.

Kristi Kaylor, principal in 6126 LLC in Beverly Hills, and Henri Levy, chief executive officer of Los Angeles' DNAM Apparel, which will manufacture the line under license, spoke exclusively to WWD about the expansion: "We've had amazing success with the leggings line," said Kaylor. "We have a great business with Neiman Marcus and several hundred great specialty stores. [DNAM Apparel] was the perfect partner to work with 6126 and grow it as a lifestyle brand. We're launching the full clothing collection next year, and a cosmetics line, handbags, shoes, jewelry in spring 2011."

The fall 2010 apparel line will comprise 100 pieces (spring 2011 will be 150) wholesaling from $18 for basic leggings to $300 for a leather jacket. Average retail price points will fall between $100 and $150. The 6126 leggings currently retail from $68 to $120. Fabrics will include the same Modal and lace used in the leggings, plus cashmere and leather.

The line will retail where the leggings currently sell: Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Nordstrom and specialty stores nationwide, plus Harrods, Lane Crawford, Kitson Japan and Isetan internationally.

Suspect Charged In Celebrity Break-Ins

audrina patridgeLindsay Lohan and Audrina Patridge may have found their man, the man that robbed their houses that is. Nicholas Frank Prugo, an 18-year-old man from Calabasas, California ha been charged with two counts of residential burgulary in connection with the break-ins at the Hollywood Hills homes of reality TV star Audrina Patridge and actress Lindsay Lohan. The LA Times reports that Prugo allegedly stole more than $170,000 worth of jewelry and designer clothes. He had been arrested last month and could face up to six years in prison if convicted on all counts. He is scheduled to be arraigned on November 11. Video footage from both Lohan's home and Patridge's home was used to nab the suspect.

UPDATE: The suspects in this case were also linked to Paris Hilton's break-in. The LAPD were able to return her missing jewelry and other belongings.

The Fashion Statement: Paris Celebrates Halloween Early?

Far be it from me to criticize designers when they get creative, try something new or push the envelope. That's fashion.

But, is it me, or are designers presenting collections in Paris this week getting downright costume-y? More than a few of them have gone from subtle references in their collections to frighteningly literal representations of sea creatures, Roman gladiators or whatever else inspires them.

Take Louis Vuitton's show yesterday. Marc Jacobs used giant Afro wigs-the kind you'd pick up on the Halloween aisle-in his presentation. Disappointingly, the Afros were the only things unifying the collection comprised of everything but the kitchen sink (Davy Crockett fur, American Indian accessories, military looks, hippie, club kid, etc.).

Alexander McQueen called his show Plato's Atlantis. With hair sculpted into reptilian fins, models walked by in oversize platformed shoes that looked like heads-scary in more ways than one (you could probably break an ankle in those things). Reptilian patterns, scales and otherworldly silhouettes brought home the idea that we all came from ancient creatures of the deep.

It was a chainsaw massacre at Viktor & Rolf. Paying homage to the economy, the duo took a chainsaw to tulle gowns, cocktail gowns and jackets. To be fair, you expect this sort of thing from these fashion pranksters. These guys have been poking fun at the industry for years (and laughing all the way to the bank).

Lindsay Lohan's Ungaro Fashions Widely Panned

In recent years celebrities popped out fashion lines nearly every time you turned around. And every luxury brand seemed to have a movie star in its ad campaign. Then the recession came along and suddenly a lot of those lines folded and fashion campaign deals went to the models. But could the tide be changing yet again? It looks like some celebrities are turning back toward collaborations with high-end brands. At Paris Fashion Week Lindsay Lohan unveiled her new fashion collaboration with Ungaro. Lohan already has her own leggings line, 6126 and was announced as the new creative director of the fashion house three weeks ago. She has since been working with head designer Estrella Archs on the quickie collection and the two ended the show by strolling out onto the catwalk together. So far the reviews of the 1980s-inspired line have been less than kind. WWD called it "cheesy and dated" and others took issue with the lines use of sequined heart pasties used not just to cover nipples but as forehead adornment. Neon colors, harem pants and shoulder-baring tops recalled the very worst of 1980s fashion. Earlier this year, my colleague Kristin Taylor Young questioned whether or not celebrity designs made a mockery of fashion, clearly in this case many people think the answer is yes.

Lohan might not be the only one to step into high fashion. Today the Daily Mail reported that Sarah Jessica Parker may be the new face of Halston. Sarah Jessica Parker also had a clothing line "Bitten" which has shut down. She may front the Spring 2010 campaign for US fashion label Halston with the ads set to appear around the time "Sex and the City 2" opens. Parker's design chops are a little more advanced than Lohan's so if she decides to step back into the design studio hopefully the results will be a bit more promising.

Lindsay Lohan Robbed In Hollywood

lindsay lohanIt seems sometimes that trouble follows wherever Lindsay Lohan goes. The latest is that her Hollywood Hills home has been burglarized. Lohan's mother Dina says that a safe was ripped off the wall and that bags, shoes and jewelry were also missing. Lohan was already planning a move from the home. TMZ says that Lindsay Lohan's father Michael reported the break-in. He told TMZ that he believes the break-in was an inside job because people that were working for Lindsay did not turn on the alarm. In May, police were called over another attempted break-in. Lohan's home is equipped with security cameras.

Young Hollywood can be an easy target. Paris Hilton has had her home broken into more than once. Orlando Bloom saw his Hollywood Hills home burglarized last month. Some stars choose to live in gated communities for the added protection or hire security personnel to protect themselves and their homes.

6th Annual Hamptons Happening Raises $265,000

Jon & Kate Plus 8 star Jon Gosselin (above left) made the scene at the 6th Annual Hamptons Happening to benefit the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) on July 25th with Lindsay Lohan's father Michael Lohan and his hot young fiancée Erin Muller (above right and center). The threesome attended to show their support for a cause which both Gosselin and Lohan regard as personally important to them. Honorary Chair Costas Kondylis, with Event Co-Chairs Laurie L. Schaffran and Marion Waxman led the evening, helping to raise $265,000 to benefit the SWCRF. Hosted by Susan and Louis Meisel, the festivities were held at The Sagaponack Sculpture Field with Dr. Samuel Waxman as the keynote speaker.

The SWCRF is a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt organization that focuses on the most promising strategies for developing cures and treatments for many types of cancers, as well as preventative measures. SWCRF is at the cutting edge of research into alternatives to the traditional treatments of chemotherapy and radiation. Foundation-supported research includes reprogramming chaotically growing cancer cells to behave normally, understanding cancer stem cells, and mobilizing the immune system. These will hopefully lead to precisely targeted treatments or preventatives which will have minimal side effects on the recipients.

Participating restaurants showing their support at the benefit included Annie's Organic Café, Bobby Van's, Brandt Beef, Cavaniola's Gourmet Cheese Shop, Chef Pierrot Signature Catering, DuFour Pastry Kitchens, The Fudge Shoppe, Ichiban Sushi, il laboratoria de gelato, Kneaded Bread, La Masseria, Leo's Latticini, Magnolia Bakery, Manhattan Chili, Nichol's, Pure Dark, The Seafood Shop, Shun Lee, Susan Meisel, Town Line BBQ and Tutto Il Giorno. Beverages were sponsored by Palm Bay Imports, Imperia Vodka, Fire Island Beer Company, Hampton Coffee Company and Pellegrino/Acqua Panna.

Did Lindsay Lohan Steal Diamonds?

Filed under: Jewelry, Celebrity Shopping, Crimes and Misdemeanors

Lindsay Lohan has lost her own belongings before but now she's being questioned over nearly $500,000 in diamonds that have gone missing. The jewels were used in a photo shoot at London's Big Sky Studios with Lohan and are believed to have disappeared right around the same time she left the shoot. Gossip columns are reporting that insiders say that she had been asking if she could keep the beautiful necklace and earrings. Scotland Yard is on the case. Entertainment Tonight has a quote from Lindsay Lohan's representative who says that no one has contacted them yet but that "Lindsay is happy to cooperate. She wants them to find the missing items."

Lindsay Lohan's Maserati On eBay

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Auctions, Celebrity Shopping

Once again one of Lindsay Lohan's cars has wound up on eBay (her Mercedes was on the auction website in 2007). The white Maserati Quattroporte did not belong to Lindsay Lohan but to Dennis DeSantis. Lohan was photographed driving the car and involved it in a fender bender, which TMZ reported that CARFAX does not mention on their report. The 2007 Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT is fully loaded with Brembo brakes, power seats, CD player, rear sunshades, parking sensors, suede headliner, white stitching, GT wheels and tires, sport exhaust, navigation and moon roof. and has just over 25,000 miles on it. Last time I looked bids were over $62,100.

UPDATE: The listing has been pulled. (Thanks, Colin)

Lindsay Lohan's NYC Apt. for Sale

Lindsay Lohan's former Manhattan pied-a-terre, in the Atelier building on West 42nd St., is on the market for $1.25 million. The 40th floor aerie features two bedrooms, two bathrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows with an unobstructed view of the Empire State Building, marble baths, stone countertops and an open chef's kitchen, NBC New York reports. Though the actress' reps insist she never spent much time there, the listing circulated by the realty company notes she spent $100,000 on luxe upgrades for the pad. And last year she gave Extra an exclusive tour of the apartment and the building, telling them "the security is fantastic here which I think is really important".

Lohan also hosted a photo exhibit and auction there benefiting the American Red Cross. The Atelier's amenities include a white marble lobby, exclusive full basketball and volleyball courts, a rooftop Sky Lounge with a billiards table, a landscaped sun deck, and a fitness and yoga center with an indoor swimming pool. Nick Lachey and gal pal Vanessa Minnillo also own a condo there. Lohan's apartment had originally been listed at $1.3 million but has already been reduced by $50,000. She may have originally been given use of the apartment for free in exchange for promoting the building.

Bardot, Beatles & Monroe Star in Sotheby's Sale

The buzz at big photo auctions lately has been all about nude supermodels. Perfectly understandable, of course, but how many times can you really stand to see Gisele naked? (OK, no need to answer that). At Sotheby's latest photo sale in London on Tuesday, we're pleased to see some stunning images on offer which while short on supermodel cleavage nonetheless have plenty of appeal. Take for instance this portrait of the beautiful Brigitte Bardot taken by Terry O'Neill 1971 with an estimate of $8,000 - $12,000. Not one of the more expensive items on offer, but worth every penny in our estimation.

Also included in the amazing auction is Helmut Newton's 1975 photo of Elsa Peretti, est. $24,000 - $30,000, and his 1987 portrait of Jodie Foster, est. $14,000 - $18,000; Andy Warhol's Polaroid of Muhammad Ali taken in 1977, est. $10,000 - $14,000; David Bailey's 1969 double portrait of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, est. $20,000 - $30,000; and a recent print made from Bert Stern's famed Marilyn Monroe series (recently aped by Lindsay Lohan), est. $6,000 - $8,000. See the gallery for more.
