Calliope Luxury Chandelier

Described as both organic and mechanical, this Calliope Luxury Chandelier is beautiful for sure. It's made up of rectangular pieces of artistic rippled glass clipped by 100% recycled aluminum clasps to form a multicolored glittering sphere. Definitely a modern design, even futuristic, although has an certain natural appeal also. Some say it looks like a flower bud about to open, although that wasn't my first thought. Available from Eleek it can be customized in a variety of colors and/or patinas for a truly unique lighting experience. $15,800

The Zettel'z 5 Light

The Zettel'z 5 light will not only illuminate your home or office, but it will also provide a conversation piece and interesting focal point because you can actually do some reading while admiring this lamp. It's made up of 80 sheets of Japanese paper hung in such a way to disguise the bulb inside, diffusing the light in an interesting way. Designed in 1997 by Ingo Maurer, 49 of the paper sheets are printed and 31 are blank, and the rest of the lamp is made of stainless steel and satin-frosted glass. £571

Sputnik Floor Lamp

This is one of those pieces that needs careful placement in the right environment to look right, but if you achieve that it could really be an interesting addition to a room. It's the Sputnik Floor Lamp, and its satellite-inspired look is sure to be a conversation starter. It has 24 chrome arms, some with chrome spheres on the end and others with light bulbs. I'm curious to see what it looks like turned on because it seems like it might need a shade? That's going to be a lot of light -- I hope it comes with a dimmer switch! 173cm tall, £255.

Da Vinci LED Swarovski Crystal Chandelier

Not a chandelier for a timid room or for a timid decorator, the new Da Vinci LED Crystal Chandelier from Schonbek "puts on a dazzling light show." And it's no wonder, since it's both enormous (available in 3 foot and 5 foot diameters) and is made up of hundreds of Swarovski crystals illuminated by either halogen or LED lights from within. The different lighting options mean you can either have a gently glittering moon hovering over your party or (by switching to LED mode) bursts of brightly changing color instead.

It's gorgeous, but I'm sure there are few with a place to put it!

Colorblock Hanging Light

Some great reasons to drink more wine, if you were looking for some, are these Colorblock Hanging Lights. Designed and made by Jerry Kott of recycled wine bottles (he cuts them apart, puts them back together, and polishes them) they're bright without being obnoxious, stylish, functional, and good for the environment because they're made of recycled materials -- what else can you ask for in a lighting fixture? Each hanging lamp measures 17"Hx3"W, is priced according to the number of color blocks, and is custom made to order. $190-$310

Get Your Own Personal Moon

I love this idea! I have no clue how or what I would do to pull this off in a decorating scheme but I just love the idea of having my own moon. The design comes from Russia and this is one situation where if somebody was feeling all romantic they really could throw a lasso around the moon and pull down out of the sky (or tree, as it were). It's a large lightbox and is called "Your Personal Moon." What do you think? Cool or ridiculous? I'm just wondering if it has a dimmer switch?

Lee Hale Bird Feet Candle Holders

If you're looking to put some "creepy" on your table then these Lee Hale Bird Feet candle holders could be what's missing. I'm all about the outdoors and generally gravitate towards things with a natural theme, but these decapitated bird feet are not appealing to me at all. They even look a little violent, what with the big claws and all.

But obviously somebody in the world must love them, and differences in taste is what makes everything interesting. So if you think these are beautiful then great for you -- just 60,000 yen for the pair.

Giant Anglepoise 1227 Limited Edition Lamp

Whoa! That lamp from the Pixar movies has gone AWOL.

I would love to have one of these, and no it's not the PIxar lamp on a rampage. It's a special edition Giant 1227 Anglepoise Lamp in celebration of the 70th birthday of the original 1227 Anglepoise Lamp. This one is three times the size of the original and has an aluminum base, joints, arms, and fork. It comes with a halogen reflector bulb and castors with locks for easy (but safe) positioning. Black, £1,660.

Blow Table Lamp

The Blow Table Lamp: Here an otherwise fairly unremarkable table lamp gets a stylish and artsy upgrade simply by sticking it inside a glass bubble. What is it about glass domes that make whatever is inside so much more interesting? This lamp has a modern and functional appeal, and comes in a few different styles and sizes. And the best part about table lamps, their flexibility, remains intact -- you can control the position and angle of the lamp by moving an attached magnet that sits on the outside of the bubble. Crafty crafty! By Studio Italia Design, $1200+

YoYo Elmar Flototto Floor Lamp

I seem to be finding all the items with tongue twister names lately, but it's worth the risk of sounding like an idiot when their looks are as fun as their names (plus you guys can't hear me trying to read them out loud). Enter the Yo Yo Elmar Flototto Floor Lamp, which will bring to your home the vibe of a large Yo Yo sitting on the floor. The cord wraps around and forms the "string" for the Yo Yo and allows you to roll the lamp anywhere you might need light. Designed by Caterina von Matern and Lisa Lindstrom, it's suggested as great in the garden (outdoor safe?) or as an art piece indoors. $317.98

The Ball Lamp Pendant

Who knew that a big bunch of white plastic balls could come together and make such a beautiful lighting fixture? It seems all the best creations are surprisingly simple, though, so this should be no exception. Designed back in 1969 by Verner Panton the Ball Lamp Pendant it's also known as the Wonder Lamp. The white balls are suspended on nylon strings, which makes them look like they're floating around the bulb inside and provides a warm diffused light. The Design Within Reach description mentions that the balls "bounce against one another with a satisfying tap," which is cool but I can't think why you'd be knocking your lamp around to end up hearing that sound, unless I'm missing something. Currently on sale for $998.

The Balloon Inspired Frosted Sheep Light

This lamp would fit perfectly in a child's room, and brings to mind counting sheep as they go jumping through the clouds. Created by David Hupton and Yve Thelermont for Thelermont Hupton of Great Britain, this simple design was inspired by the balloon animals made by clowns at carnivals and parties -- now you can have one that not only lights up a room but also never deflates! It's frosted blown glass mounted on a silver finished steel stand and comes in just the one color and design. $385

Prospetto Lighting Creazione Collection

This hanging chandelier light is definitely beautiful, but you also want to make sure you hang it somewhere where there's no danger of someone putting an eye out -- not a good choice to dangle low over a dining room table or buffet for instance. The Prospetto Lighting Creazione Collection consists of this lamp in a variety of colors (shown here in "fruit") as either chandelier or floor lamp styles in small, medium, and large sizes. Handmade of mouth-blown glass it looks like an explosion of party ribbons, perfect for a room that needs a touch of whimsy to lighten the mood. Priced at $8999.99 and up.

Cocktails and Lace Chandelier

Here's a unique take on reusing old wine glasses -- stick them together and make a lighting fixture! Created and handmade by designers Michael and Nora for Green with Glamour, the Cocktails and Lace Chandelier is beautiful and definitely draws the eye for more than just a quick glance. But something stresses me about seeing all those wine glasses strung up in mid-air in that haphazard way -- I can't help but imagine them all as tumbling down and about to shatter on the table or floor below (especially that last little one on the very end). Measures 35" x 15", $3250.

The "Fall of the Damned" Lampshade

Although I can appreciate the artistic message and a certain ominous beauty, I honestly have no idea why anyone would hang this "the fall of the damned" lampshade in their home -- it's downright creepy. From a distance it appears as an interesting and intricate ornament, but up close the shapes focus into individual bodies twisted in fear as they fall to their doom -- frozen amidst shadows and plays of light from within. By Luc Merx for the mgx 'Private Collection,' the detail and feeling evoked by this piece is remarkable. Available in white only and in a limited edition of only 40 pieces, it's priced at $46,200.
