Boston's Liberty Hotel Joins Luxury Collection

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

The owners of the luxe Liberty Hotel in Boston, a National Historic Landmark built in 1851, have inked a deal to make it part of Starwood's Luxury Collection portfolio, its very first in Boston. Located in a historic former jail at the foot of Beacon Hill overlooking the Charles River, The Liberty Hotel is a 300-room "urban retreat infused with a distinctive personality that honors the building's rich history while imparting contemporary vibrancy." The building preserves the original structure's commanding 90-foot central rotunda, soaring ceilings, exposed-brick walls, and authentic portions of its historic jail cells. Three floors of balconies are restored prison catwalks, and the property includes a landscaped courtyard designed to be a hidden gem in the Beacon Hill neighborhood.

"We are proud to welcome The Liberty into our unique collection of hotels and resorts that celebrate distinctive heritage and authentic character," notes Paul James, Global Brand Leader, St. Regis and The Luxury Collection Hotels & Resorts. "With the building's rich storied past and mysterious character, The Liberty is destined to be a coveted destination for global travellers and an unparalleled way to discover Boston." The hotel is owned by a joint venture between HEI Hotels & Resorts (HEI), the nation's fastest growing private owner/operator of hotel real estate, and Cambridge, Mass.-based Carpenter & Company, Inc. The Liberty Hotel is anchored by several restaurants, CLINK, Alibi, Scampo, and the Liberty Bar. CLINK is designed with vestiges of original jails cells that create cozy nooks for an intimate dining experience.

The Liberty Hotel in Boston is celebrating its second anniversary with their 222 Anniversary Package. The anniversary is today, September 5, but the package runs the rest of the year. The weekend package has an early check-in at 2 p.m. and a late check-out at 2 p.m. The package includes overnight accommodations in a luxury king guestroom starting from $222. It's worth staying in this hotel just to stand in the center atrium, shown above, and imagine what it must have been like when it was the Charles Street Jail.

Boston's Liberty Hotel Offers Red Sox Packages

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Sports

As all baseball fans (even the Yankee faithful) know, Red Sox Nation stretches far and wide. With that in mind, Boston's Liberty Hotel, which occupies a lavishly converted city jail in Beacon Hill, is offering overnight packages that include hard-to-get tickets to Fenway Park.

The offer, called Fenway Fan or Foe, includes one night's accommodations for two, a pair of Pavilion Club tickets to a Red Sox game and breakfast for two. It's available on four upcoming spring weekends: April 17-19 (when the Baltimore Orioles will be in town); May 8-10 (Tampa Bay Rays); June 5-7 (Texas Rangers); and June 19-20 (Atlanta Braves). The price starts at $725.

The 300-room hotel opened in September 2007 after a $150 million transformation of the mid-nineteenth-century Charles Street Jail. An exquisite Romanesque structure, it features exposed brick walls, wrought-iron chandeliers and an atrium (pictured) that stretches 90 feet high. Among many winks and nods to the building's old days as a lockup, the first-floor bar is called Alibi. It's located in what was used to be the "drunk tank" of the jail.

Boston is my favorite place to spend the fourth of July but finding a great spot to view the fireworks and hear the concert on the Esplenade can be challenging if you don't have a local friend with a great roof deck. Their Independence Day Perfect View package comes with up to four seats on the Community Boating Dock for the Boston Pops! performance and Charles River fireworks display, dinner for up to four people at Clink, the hotel restaurant, and Veuve Clicquot champagne and dessert at turndown. A former jail in Boston is becoming quite the hot spot. The Liberty Hotel , which was formerly the Charles Street Jail, will soon be the home of the first Veuve Clicquot Champagne bar in the U.S. The bar is named La Grande Dame and is an alcove on the second floor of the hotel. Flute glasses and bottles of Veuve Clicqot's La Grande Dame as well as other bubbly selections from the French Champagne house will be available. This is just the third Veuve Clicquot bar in the world; two others recently opening in Hamburg, Germany and Macao, China. The bar is set to open on Friday.

Historic Hotels Upgrading to Attract New Customers

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

In many large cities, you will find beautiful historic hotel properties situated on prime real estate. Some have been abandoned and risk being demolished while others are still operating, but lack the amenities necessary to attract luxury customers. Rather than tear them down and start from scratch, a new trend sees hoteliers renovating and upgrading their properties to offer the best of both worlds - first class accommodations along with historic charm.

One such property is the Book-Cadillac Hotel in Detroit. Built in 1924, the hotel was once a destination for presidents and movie stars, but fell into decline in the 1980's. Having stood vacant for more than twenty years, it is now being reincarnated as the 455-room Westin Book Cadillac Detroit. Scheduled to open in late 2008, the property will feature condominiums, retail and restaurant space and provide full-time employment for more than 450 workers.

Even those with less illustrious histories are getting a new lease on life. In 1946, The Winecoff Hotel in Atlanta was the site of the deadliest hotel fire in U.S. history, but after undergoing a $28 million renovation has reopened as the 4-star Ellis Hotel on Atlanta's famed Peachtree Street. Oklahoma City's Skirvin Hotel has benefited from a $55 million renovation and is now the Skirvin Hilton.

Visitors to Boston can enjoy an unusual experience staying at the Liberty Hotel, formerly the Charles Street Jail. Once considered "unfit for human living", the renovated property celebrates its roots by retaining some of the jail cells amid the luxury accommodations. And after a $10 million renovation, Seattle's century-old Alexis Hotel is now a luxury destination in the heart of downtown, offering modern amenities in an art-filled atmosphere.
