2011 Geneva Motor Show: The Supercars

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Geographically located in between the supercar capitals of Europe, Switzerland is where the world's automakers come to showcase the latest array of mouth-watering, bank-balance-tempting exotic sports cars. And this year's Geneva Motor Show didn't disappoint in the least.

In between all those luxury sedans, upscale sport-utes and premium hatchbacks were a blinding assortment of six-figure supercars seemingly capable of bending the very laws of physics. Standing out from the crowd were brand-new offerings from Ferrari, Lamborghini and Pagani, new takes on old favorites from Maserati, Aston Martin and Jaguar, concept cars from Alfa Romeo, BMW and Wiesmann and more.

We went to Geneva to check them out with our own eyes (and lens) – follow the jump to see what we found, and click the images to view the full galleries from our sister-site Autoblog.

Paris Hilton Gets A Lexus LFA For Her Birthday

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Celebrity Shopping

paris hilton and cy waitsIt's long been known that Paris Hilton has a taste for expensive cars especially Bentleys (she once had a pink one). Her loyalty may be switching to Lexus after she received a 2012 Lexus LFA supercar from her boyfriend Cy Waits on her 30th birthday. "My boyfriend got me the most incredible birthday gift!" Hilton wrote on Twitter about receiving the $375,000 bright yellow vehicle. Waits is making major points with the reality star this week, also giving her a ruby and diamond necklace for Valentine's Day.

Always one to mix commerce with celebration, Hilton used the occasion of her birthday to promote her new reality show "The World According To Paris" and her new iPhone app as she held parties on both coasts and appeared on New York television shows including "The Late Show with David Letterman" and "The Wendy Williams Show."

We mentioned the Lexus LFA just the other day for its role in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.

UPDATE: Our sibling site PopEater reports that Paris' new LFA is not yellow but is instead pearl white. Waits presented her with the yellow car as a joke.

The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition cover featuring model Irina Shayk was unveiled this week but there is also all sorts of eye candy inside as well. This year's issue features a spread combining two beauties, supermodel Rianne Ten Haken and the Lexus LFA. For the shoot, photographer Yu Tsai had the LFA, which has a 552 horsepower, 4.8 liter, V10 engine, run high-speed donuts about four feet away from the model who is clad in a yellow bikini that matches the car. Check out video footage after the jump.

Lexus Unveils Performance Models in Tokyo

Lexus was once known for making cushy, if not particularly sporty luxury automobiles. But these days the premium Japanese auto marque is getting serious about transforming itself into a performance brand to rival the best from Europe.

To that end, Lexus rolled in to the Tokyo Auto Salon with a number of performance-oriented vehicles. Headlining the line-up is the IS F Club Circuit Sports Racer (pictured above), which upgrades on the already aggressive IS F sports sedan with carbon fiber body panels, race-tuned suspension and other performance accessories.

Lexus also took the occasion to show off the CT 200h F-Sport package, as well as the racing version of the LFA supercar that competed in last year's Nürburgring 24-hour race.

Bespoke Luggage for the Lexus LFA by Tumi

Filed under: Handbags, Luxury Cars & Autos

Buying an exotic supercar isn't a practical decision. But if you want to use yours more frequently than the odd Sunday drive, you're going to encounter a rather cramped, and often irregularly-sized trunk. Call it the byproduct of an afterthought. That's why they make bespoke luggage to fit the baggage compartments on such exotica.

Companies like Ferrari and Porsche may be well accustomed to offering such custom luggage, but for Lexus, this is new territory. So they've turned to established luggage-makers Tumi to develop a set specifically for the LF-A.

The set of hard-shell suitcases is made of aluminum and carbon fiber. Each has a specific purpose, and carries the Vehicle Identification Number from the car its made to accompany for that added bit of exclusivity.

Lexux LFA Nürburgring Package

A few months ago we brought you initial reports of an even more hardcore, performance oriented version of the LFA supercar. Now Lexus has confirmed the package with official details, availability and pricing information.

Called the Nürburgring Package, named after the famous German race track where the LFA race car cut its teeth, the extra-special supercar benefits from a 10-horsepower boost, quicker transmission shift times and a revised aerodynamics package.

Only 50 examples will be offered at a $70,000 premium over the standard LFA's $375,000 list price. But at such limited quantities, good luck getting your hands on one.

With its six-figure price-tag and otherworldly performance, the Lexus LFA charts new territory for the Japanese luxury brand. But as it turns out, Lexus isn't stopping there, as reports from the Land of the Rising Sun bring us the hard-core, track-focused LFA Nurburgring edition.

Named after the famous German road course on which the racing prototypes that gave birth to the LFA first competed, the LFA Nurburgring track edition reportedly benefits from carbon fiber spoilers front and rear, new wheels and tires, a stiffer suspension and a 10-horsepower boost. Only four colors will be offered, and production is expected to come out of the 500-car allotment originally earmarked by Lexus. Stay tuned for more details.

Lexus LFA Already Sold Out in Japan

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

You'd figure it might take a while to sell a quantity of $400,000 sports cars, but then you'd be underestimating how much Japan's wealthy elite has been anticipating a supercar to call their own. The Acura NSX was the first and last genuine supercar to hail from the Land of the Rising Sun, but even that pales in comparison to the Lexus LFA.

Only 500 examples of the exotic Toyota will be made, with 165 earmarked for the Japanese domestic market, 150 for North America and the remaining 185 heading to Europe and other markets. And already Japan has pre-sold its allotment, with all 165 examples having been spoken for only three months since its unveiling. We knew the LFA was fast, but we didn't expect it to sell out quite that fast.

Lexus LFA For Sale in Europe, Lease in North America

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Speculating on the value of exclusive supercars has become big business, and some automakers are intent on keeping their prices at where they've set them. Ferrari, for example, was known to lease some of their most high-end exotica to their clients for the first couple of years before offering to sell them for the remainder of their value. Now Lexus – which has entered the top-tier supercar arena for the first time – is following suite. According to reports, North American customers will have to lease their Lexus LFA from the automaker rather than buy them.

European customers, on the other hand, will be able to buy theirs outright, but they'll have to do it through only one dealership for the entire continent. And it's not even located on the continent. London's Lexus Park Lane has been given the exclusive contract for all of Europe. So prospective buyers will have to go through the London dealership, which has appointed a dedicated liaison for the $375,000 supercar and is now accepting "expressions of interest" together with initial deposits in advance of official orders, which will be taken beginning in March before deliveries begin in 2011.

$375,000 Lexus LFA Supercar Debuts at Tokyo Motor Show

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

If you're in the market for a top-of-the-line exotic sportscar, it used to be that the European automakers (like Ferrari, Porsche and Aston Martin) were the only place to go. The Acura NSX held down the fort for the Japanese automakers for a long while, but since its departure it's been back to business as usual.

Japan's carmakers, however, are in the midst of a renaissance in the supercar arena. The Nissan GT-R, once kept exclusively in the Japanese Domestic Market, has been taking on all challengers, and now Lexus has stepped up with the highly-anticipated new LFA. With a 550-horsepower V10 engine, a 3.7-second sprint to 60, a top speed in excess of 200 miles per hour and a $375,000 price tag, the Lexus LFA is capable of dicing it with the best Europe has to offer and holding its own.

Despite the extraordinary price tag, sources suggest that parent company Toyota will actually take a loss on each one sold. Which could help explain why they'll only be making 500 examples, making this one very attractive and – for everyone involved – very expensive piece of window dressing.

Lexus To Show Off Crystallized LF-A in Milan

Click above for a gallery of the crystallized Lexus LF-A
Late last year, Toyota confirmed that development of its $225,000 Lexus LF-A supercar would continue on despite the lack of any sort of production time line. The supercar has seen race duty already, having competed in last year's 24 Hours of Nurburgring in Germany, and now the same platform has been chosen to help the automaker show that it's got fashion sense as well. A totally crystallized exterior will grace the LF-A when it goes on display during Fashion Week in Milan, showing off the car's fancy drivetrain components in the process.

The LF-A has been seen in concept form so many times already that spicing things up with a transparent exterior, in effect showcasing that impressive 5.0L V10 engine, strikes us as a good way to keep people interested in the car while Lexus delays its introduction in preparation for better economic times.
