World's Largest LED Chandelier is an Energy Saver

One of the biggest energy consumers can be those huge gorgeous chandeliers hanging in hotels, theaters and entertainment venues. Could LED chandeliers be an greener answer to big room-dominating lighting? Recently Meyda Tiffany installed the world's largest LED free-hanging chandelier at the Stanley Center for the Arts in Utica, New York. The Stanley Chandelier put out illumination equivalent to 720 100-watt incandescent light bulbs, but only uses power equivalent to 11 100-watt incandescent light bulbs for an energy savings of 98.5% .

The chandelier weighs 6,500 pounds and is 35 feet in diameter. It is made of steel, blown-glass and acrylic and is decorated with hand-painted blue and red glass diamonds that match the other lighting fixtures in the theater. The life expectancy of the LED is 50 years based on the Stanley's average reported usage.

Miscea Sensor Activated Faucet

Now here's a high-tech faucet: the Miscea Sensor Activated Faucet. The faucet recognizes through motion alone what you want not only in the way of water on/water off, water warmer/water colder but also soap and disinfectant lotion options. It's made of stainless steel with a laser-engraved glass interface that uses LED lighting to activate corresponding features as you bring your hand close. And it's high-tech in an eco-friendly way by both encouraging a cleaner environment (no touching germy or wet hands to the faucet) and by using 70% less water on average for washing hands.

I love fun techie gadgets as much as anybody, and it definitely looks futuristic (although I generally like things simpler), but I'm skeptical that it can't always be reliable to use -- shaky hands? Don't scald yourself!

The Brightest (and Most Expensive?) Bike Light Ever

I love the outdoors, so it's always a bit of a bummer when this time of year swings around and it starts getting darker earlier. For you bikers out there who find yourself pedaling in the dusk and the dark this is something you might want to check out: the Betty, by Lupine Lighting Systems. It's made to attach to your bike or your helmet (or wherever) and it's the brightest (and possibly most expensive) bike light ever made. The Betty is so bright, in fact, that if you pedal too slowly or stop completely it will start dimming itself automatically because it needs your self-generated wind to keep from overheating. Nice motivation to keep pushing yourself!

Made of seven LEDs, the Betty bike light is about as bright as a car's headlights (watch out for deer!). $1185

Swarovski Contemporary Lighting

Swarovski crystals are all over everything these days, and interior lighting is no exception. Except in this case we're not talking a crystal chandelier, but crystal used in a different way for unique lighting patterns and beauty. New in a line of contemporary lighting from Swarovski is the Crystal StarLED, the Crystal StarLED Deluxe, and the Atlas Select.

There's a lot going on with these new collections, including both different lighting styles and different bulb arrangements. The one pictured here, the Melody, is one of my personal favorites.

Da Vinci LED Swarovski Crystal Chandelier

Not a chandelier for a timid room or for a timid decorator, the new Da Vinci LED Crystal Chandelier from Schonbek "puts on a dazzling light show." And it's no wonder, since it's both enormous (available in 3 foot and 5 foot diameters) and is made up of hundreds of Swarovski crystals illuminated by either halogen or LED lights from within. The different lighting options mean you can either have a gently glittering moon hovering over your party or (by switching to LED mode) bursts of brightly changing color instead.

It's gorgeous, but I'm sure there are few with a place to put it!

Hansacanyon LED Lit Faucet

LED faucets aren't all that new anymore, but this one has a twist. An open channel at the top, a canyon if you will, adds a bit of modern flair to an already modern idea. The water is lit by LED lights that change from blue to red, depending upon the temperature of the water. The faucet automatically shuts off after 80 seconds and has electronic temperature controls. You may never waste water or scald your hands again. $1553.

Audi TT Clubsport Quattro Study

Audi has debuted the TT Clubsport Quattro study for Wörthersee 2007, an auto enthusiast event in Austria. The speedster is stripped down to to those parts that make it most racetrack-worthy, with the 300-horsepower TFSI four-cylinder engine mated to Audi's S-tronic direct-shift gearbox, ceramic brakes, light aluminum components and four-point seatbelts taking the lead.

The wraparound windscreen (notice the lack of an A-pillar), barely-there windows and short rollbars seem to have a "minimalist" feel, yet the prominent grille, LED-encrusted headlights and HUGE intakes and fat fender flares are so much larger than life that they make the vehicle almost a caricature.

Like any self-respecting German automaker, the gadgets abound. A B&O MP3 player BeoSound 2, designed especially for this vehicle in order to fit into the round spaces set aside for the entertainment area on the dash, while a remote control is the only way to get the doors to open from the outside.

Leaf Lamp, Design Hotness For Your Desk

Few desk lamps come with as big of a buzz as the leaf lamp designed by Yves Behar for Herman Miller. It was even written up by Businessweek earlier this year. The leaf lamp is an LED crowd pleaser which lets the user customize intensity and color in order to set a mood or a location. The vertical blade of the leaf light swivels and the range of motion allows the user to have an intense lighting or a more ambient experience. The leaf remains cool and the LEDs use less than 12 watts of power and use 40% less energy than a compact flourescent light. The light is available in red, white, black, nickel or polished aluminum and start at $499.

Mood Light Flat Tiles

It seems like we might run out of wall space before we run out of great things to decorate them with.

We have already heard about color-changing wall paint, but what about a color changing wall? Mood Light Flat Tiles conceal LED lights that can create a dazzling multi-colored display - or a soothing one - in your home. The red, blue and green color settings can be adjusted to create any color you can think of, and the unit comes with a remote control that allows you to define your own light pulses and patterns in addition to the preprogrammed patterns. LED Block Clock

Wow, $469 for a block of wood? But wait, it tells time too. This block clock designed by Takumi in Japan looks like a simple block of wood when it is turned off and when it is on, the LED numbers shine through. The only things that mar the pure wood simplcity are the time adjustment indicators and the hole for the power jack.
