Orla Kiely's handbags have always had an infusion of vintage inspired designs and modern appeal. This bag is so unusual that you are either going be completely enthralled by it or wonder what in the heck they were thinking. I think I love it. It's flirty and fun with a double row of eyeleted leather ruffles in a gorgeous deep red. With all that going on, the rest of the bag is appropriately simple in every other way. I've been waiting for this rusty orange color to become popular again. It is one of my favorite hues, but it seems to have had a difficult time overcoming the gaudy reputation it earned in the 1970's. Less shocking than red and brighter than brown, the color just glows with warmth and understated style. On this tote, that color is the focus, with very little hardware to distract from the gorgeous distressed leather. Inside, the bag is lined in similarly-hued canvas and is divided into two compartments with a center zip pocket. Measuring 14"W x 12"H x 7"D, it has an 8" strap drop and sells for $545.

If I had to choose just one bag to carry for the remainder of my days, it would be a bag like this. Large, sturdy and neutral. The vintage leather looks like it would just get more beautiful with wear and the wide strap promises to be comfortable when the bag is loaded up. The hardware is over-sized, but the brass blends nicely with the warm tone of the leather. On the back side, it has a handy open pocket and the interior features several more. Lined with Tattersall fabric, the bag measures 10" x 10" x 4" with a 14" strap drop. $448.

Michael Kors is big on the buckles these days and I can see the attraction. The gold-tone hardware adds a dash of shine while giving the appearance of being completely functional. Of course, this big gold buckle is purely decorative but it looks lovely with a wide patent leather strap threaded through. The bag itself looks pretty simple, but there are actually three different leathers involved in the patchwork pattern - patent, matte and suede. The bag fastens with a magnetic snap and is also available in a brown/black version. $395.

I usually find Dooney and Bourke bags to be a little stiff and boring. This one isn't all that exciting, but I like it for its simplicity. Clean lines, the sparing use of silver-tone hardware, and the neutral color make this satchel perfect for every day use. It looks quite rugged and up to the job of toting around the stuff you just can't leave home without. The cowhide leather is water repellent and the bottom has protective feet. Measuring 10½"H x 17"W x 8½" D, the bag features internal zip and cell phone pockets. It is also available in a pretty blue, but I think we've seen enough pretty blue bags lately. $395.
