The Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational Golf Tournament: Celebrity, Philanthropy, and the Allure of Shadow Creek

Michael Jordan Golf Tournament

The Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational Golf Tournament hosted by Aria Resort And Casino, was recently held at the Shadow Creek Golf Course in North Las Vegas. Luxist attended the event this past weekend and experienced first-hand the unique blend of celebrity and philanthropy. However, this year the event took place at one of the most alluring, mythic, elite golf courses in the U.S., Tom Fazio's Shadow Creek. And for the first time, the course opened to the general public.

A little more on this golf course: unlike many famous courses, this one is hard to imagine, out in the middle of the Nevada desert, and even harder to find. From the Las Vegas strip, it's about a half hour away -- north on I-15 to Craig Road, then go west, then north again, and finally, through some imposing guard gates. And then, there it is, beyond the gates -- the 350-acre, $60 million plus, exceptionally private, painfully green, Tom Fazio course looking more like courses at Pinehurst, or Kiawah, or Augusta. Anywhere, almost, but Nevada.

Shadow Creek boasts quiet streams, rushing brooks, weeping willows, waterfalls, ducks, pheasants, rabbits, and stone bridges that look eerily like the old Swilken bridge at St. Andrews. Indeed, Shadow Creek, has an untouched, impossibly perfect, movie-set look, as if few mortals would ever dare to actually play the course.

For many years, adding to this ineffable allure, is fact: for years, and even now, ONLY MGM Resort guests are permitted to play Shadow Creek. Green fees are listed at $500.00 -- with limo service to and from the course. And the players must schedule tee times at least an hour apart, giving the impression that golfers are on the course by themselves. All of this plays into an image of ultimate elitism combined with escapism, creating a course intrigue that involves rarity, mystery, and sanctuary.

The course's route runs mostly north and south so the sun's glare would miss the golfer's eyes, and Fazio with his builders, dug 50 feet into the low desert to provide for elevation changes and enough dirt to build hills around the entire property to provide another dimension of privacy. One of the stories heard, perhaps apocryphal, was that many who live close to the golf course don't know of its existence.

Last weekend the bling was on the red carpet in Los Angeles. This weekend, the flashiest diamond-covered item on display might have been the $1 million diamond-encrusted Couture Pop and matching necklace presented to Kim Kardashian at the Sugar Factory at the Paris in Las Vegas. The lollipop will go on display in the store's Las Vegas Strip-facing windows. Kardashian has been repping for the designer lollipops since 2010 and former Spice Girl Mel B also has a line of the pops. The Pussycat Dolls and Britney Spears had lines of the lollipops to support past tours. The lollipops have crystal-covered sticks with interchangeable color-coordinated heads.

David Arquette was supposed to attend but was involved in a car accident on the way to the Burbank Airport. On hand for the event were Mel B, Holly Madison Pussycat Dolls founder Robin Antin and Nick Cannon. Robin Leach has the full run-down of the event in his Las Vegas column.

Jason Stratham Arrives at 'Mechanic' Premiere in Iconic Jaguar E-type
British action star Jason Statham, leading man of new thriller The Mechanic, arrived at the movie's Las Vegas premiere (above) the other night in an iconic Jaguar E-Type. One of the world's sexiest sports cars, the E-Type just celebrated its 50th anniversary (see Autoblog's coverage here). Stratham, who's dating the delectable Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, plays an elite assassin in the film. For the premiere at the Las Vegas Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, Stratham took a spin down the Strip before pulling up under the marquee. The Series II E-Type Coupe he borrowed for the event, owned by Jaguar Clubs of North America member Bill Streitenberger, was there to represent the Series I E-Type that appears in the movie – which meets with a rather unfortunate end on the big screen.

Bellagio Celebrates Chinese New Year With Garden Exhibit

February 3 marks Chinese New Year. This year is the Year of the Rabbit and Las Vegas' Bellagio hotel is getting in on the celebration. Bellagio's Conservatory & Botanical Gardens has been turned into a serene sanctuary guided by the ancient practice of Feng Shui that is on display now through March 5.

The centerpiece of this exhibit is a 35-foot Chinese junk boat with a 38-foot mast inspired by traditional 15th century fishing vessels. The boat was created using teak, mahogany and cedar by Daniels Wood Land, Inc. – which is best known for building full-scale replicas of The Black Pearl for Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie franchise. The boat is surrounded by a zig-zag bridge and leads to a wing-tipped Ming Dynasty-styled gazebo.

A 12-foot rabbit with a coat comprised of more than 4,500 live sedge plants, watches over eight babies at play within a forest of bamboo trees and Taihu rocks. An 18-foot-tall Chinese God of Prosperity is found amidst gold leafed I-Ching coins and is flanked by two Ming Dynasty-styled dings, ancestral vessels that protect against bad fortunes. There are also seven replica Terracotta Warriors, covered in crushed walnuts and ground carrot seeds, accompanied by a horse-drawn carriage. The original Terracotta Army was buried with the First Emperor Qin in 210-209 BC in the Shaanxi Province and later discovered in 1974 by a group of farmers digging a well. Oversized red silk Chinese lanterns throughout the Conservatory add to the auspicious nature of the exhibit.

The rabbit serves as a symbol of fortune and longevity. Those born in the Year of the Rabbit tend to be lucky, articulate and ambitious.

The place to be to ring in 2011? For many of Hollywood's elite, it was The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, the city's newest and most glamorous resort, which kicked off a grand opening celebration with concert performances from JAY-Z and Coldplay, plus guest surprises by Kanye West, Beyonce and John Mayer.

Coldplay kicked off the evening with a 12 song set, which included Yellow, In My Place and Clocks. To ring in the New Year, JAY-Z joined Coldplay on stage for a rendition of Lost, followed by a countdown to midnight. JAY-Z took the stage for the first hours of 2011 and was joined by Kanye West for an impromptu freestyle performance of Run This Town, Can't Tell Me Nothing and Runaway. As Kanye left the stage, John Mayer joined pal JAY-Z with his guitar for several songs, including Public Service Announcement and 99 Problems. The ultimate collaboration of the evening came when Beyonce joined her husband on stage for Young Forever. She continued to wow the crowd, bringing Coldplay frontman Chris Martin back out for an acoustic duet of her hit, Halo.

Oh, New Year's Eve In Las Vegas! With over 315,000 partiers (the approximate number last year, according to the Las Vegas CVB) with money to spend and champagne to guzzle, fireworks on the roof at ARIA Resort and Casino at midnight... sounds pretty good! No wonder Las Vegas on New Year's Eve has often been called America's Party.

I have written about the evolving identity of Las Vegas on Luxist, highlighting CityCenter, the controversial, glamorous, $9 billion dollar project, that even for Las Vegas, is continuing source of inspiration, speculation and high drama. After all, it is a new beginning, a New Year, so why not?

Much is happening at CityCenter this New Year's Eve: here we go!

Las Vegas Strip Land Up For Auction

Filed under: Auctions, Real Estate Developments

las vegas strip land
How much is Las Vegas land worth these days? The market will get a new test when a 1.36-acre property with 236 feet of frontage on Las Vegas Boulevard goes up for sale through J. P. King Auction Company. The property is located just north of the famous "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign and is offered through a sealed-bid auction. The property is currently home to the 48-room Diamond Inn Hotel which was constructed in 1940. The site is the first hotel/casino seen from I-15 and has been approved by the FFA for buildable heights of 406 feet to 505 feet. The only question is whether or not anyone is interested in building in Las Vegas right now. Of course you could just keep the existing property as is.

"One of the great things about this site is that not only is it an excellent development site, but it is also already producing income," said Sam Aldabbagh, the property's owner. Aldabbagh purchased the hotel in 1978 and it is marked by a large pink elephant facing the strip. Sealed bids for the property must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Monday, December 13.

Steve Wynn Commissions Rosenquist Painting For The Cleveland Clinic's Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health

The striking image shown above is a new painting by the American Pop-artist James Rosenquist, commissioned by Las Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn for the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas. The painting is entitled "Cervello Spazio Cosmico," which means "brain space" in Italian. The painting combines images of a X-ray-like skull and brain with a sky filled with cosmic space and a background of lush flowers.

The massive oil-on-canvas painting, which is 20 feet tall and 10 feet wide, will be displayed in the Keep Memory Alive Event Center. The center was designed by Frank Gehry in his usual gleaming, spirited style. The painting will be officially unveiled in its new home at an invitation-only evening event this weekend at the Center. Chef and restaurateur Joel Robuchon, together with Alex Stratta and Paul Bartolotta will prepare a special meal for guests. Rosenquist will be in attendance to share insight into his work, which was made possible by a generous gift from Steve Wynn. The Cleveland Clinic's impressive art collection totals more than 4,000 pieces.

"We're so proud that the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health calls Las Vegas home, and I'm thrilled to be able to support its mission with this gift," said Steve Wynn. "I believe in the wonderful work happening there and in my dear friend Larry Ruvo's vision for eradicating the disease that took his father, Lou."

Will The Harmon Hotel At CityCenter Be Imploded?

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Is one of the hotels in the Las Vegas CityCenter complex doomed? It looks like one of the high-rise hotels in the $8.5 billion CityCenter could be gone before it ever opens. The Harmon Hotel has been deemed unfit to open because of extensive, nonconforming construction work. There is even talk of imploding the luxurious hotel before it ever sees a single guest.

CityCenter opened in December 2009 with great fanfare and has a variety of open hotels nearby including Aria and the Mandarin Oriental. The 400-room Harmon Hotel & Spa was originally supposed to also include 200 residential units but that project was canceled. It was trimmed into a 27-story hotel that was supposed to open this year. The Harmon was designed by the firm of English architect Lord Norman Foster.

No decision on the hotel's fate will be made soon. MGM will hire consultants to evaluate the problems with the building and present possible solutions. Those findings will be presented to the court in October 2011 and no decision is likely to occur before the court makes a ruling, expected sometime in 2012.
